| IT'S A SO-SO ATTEMPT TO TRANSFER THE FANTASTIC FOURSOME FROM PAPER TO SCREEN.
IOAN GRUFFUDD IS FORGETTABLE AS REED AND JESSICA ALBA TOO ATTRACTIVE AND NICE AS SUE. AS FOR JULIAN MCMAHON AS DR DOOM, WELL, JUST STICK TO YOUR DAY JOB ON NIP/TUCK MATE.
TO BE FAIR, THE FILM ITSELF IS JUST TOO SAFE, WE'VE GROWN ACCUSTOMED TO A LITTLE MORE FROM OUR SUPERHERO FILMS THESE DAYS. UNFORTUNATELY THE DIRECTOR NEVER ONCE TAKES THE TRAINER WHEELS OFF AND AS A RESULT WE GET PRETTY GOOD POPCORN FODDER BUT NOT MUCH MORE.
THE BEST BITS COME FROM THE SPARRING BETWEEN CHIKLIS AS THE THING AND EVANS AS THE TORCH (IN A SURPRISINGLY LIKEABLE TURN) - JUST AS IN THE COMICS, IT'S THEIR RELATIONSHIP THAT KEEPS YOU INTERESTED.
IF THIS IS INDEED THE START OF A FRANCHISE, THEN MAKE DOOM A LITTLE MORE NASTY (AND NOT AS EASY TO BEAT), MAKE THE THING GET MORE PI$$ED OFF AND HAVE HIM WIND THE TORCH UP EVEN MORE.
JUST TAKE A CHANCE NEXT TIME HUH? |
