Tangled (Blu-ray 3D + 2D Blu-ray + Digital Copy) | Blu Ray | (23/05/2011)
from £9.85 | Saving you £1.24 (4.10%) | RRP
Disney's 50th full-length animated feature film, Tangled is a visually appealing, music-filled adventure full of romance and humor. The film focuses on Rapunzel, a girl with long magical hair who's lived her entire life imprisoned in a tower by her greedy mother. Naturally optimistic and acquiescent, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) rarely complains about her circumstances, but for her 18th birthday she longs to leave the tower to see the floating lights that appear every year on her birthday. Her mother (Donna Murphy) refuses her request, but when thief Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levi) climbs the tower to escape his pursuers, Rapunzel (once she's conked him on the head with a frying pan multiple times) impulsively decides to trust the young man and convinces him to help her escape to see the floating lights. Thus begins a journey that alternates quite schizophrenically between optimistic excitement and guilty remorse that will ultimately change Rapunzel's and Flynn's lives forever. Tangled is a masterful blend of humour, adventure, passion and drama combined with a great musical score and top-notch animation. The 3-D effects add to the experience but probably won't be missed in other formats. Best of all, Disney presents a princess who matures from a meek and compliant girl into a spunky young woman who's not afraid to pursue her dreams and risk it all for love--now that's a Disney princess worth emulating. (Ages 6 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Vertigo Films presents the UK's first ever street dance movie and the first British film to be shot entirely in 3D. With debut film appearances from Britain's Got Talent stars Flawless Diversity and George Sampson this groundbreaking event movie is an inspiring exhilarating joyride through the UK's street dance scene. Things couldn't be going better for street dancer Carly (Nichola Burley). She's in love with charismatic boyfriend Jay (Ukweli Roach) and their dance crew has just made it through to the finals of the UK Street Dance Championships. But everything changes when Jay walks out on Carly and the crew breaking her heart and leaving the street dancers' dreams in jeopardy. Thrown in at the deep end Carly struggles to prove to the crew - and to herself - that she can lead them to victory. Salvation comes in the unlikely shape of ballet schoolmistress Helena (Charlotte Rampling). Impressed by the skill and enthusiasm of Carly and her troupe she strikes the street dancers a deal: they can practice in the Ballet Academy's luxurious dance studio in return for collaborating with her ballet dancers. Helena hopes Carly can inject some of the street dancers' intensity and passion into her young charges before they audition for The Royal Ballet. A clash of cultures ensues as the two very different dance styles face off against each other. After years of classical training the ballet dancers are horrified at the crew's slouchy style while Carly is increasingly exasperated at their uptight aloofness. Eventually and despite themselves the ballet dancers begin to feel a grudging respect for the street dancers' spectacular moves. And Carly can't help falling for handsome ballet dancer Tomas (Richard Winsor). Will the two groups of dancers find a way to work together before the Street Dance Championship finals and the Royal Ballet auditions?

Immortals (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + Digital Copy) | Blu Ray | (05/03/2012)
from £18.41 | Saving you £11.58 (38.60%) | RRP
Director Tarsem Singh never, ever, shortchanges you on his visuals. Presented in razor-sharp 1080p, and in 3D too, Immortals is a busy, dramatic and sparkling home cinema demonstration. It hardly skimps on the action, either. Said action kicks off as Mickey Rourke?s King Hyperion amasses an army, with the intention of waging war on humankind. This he does quite successfully, until the small matter of Henry Cavill?s Theseus interjects. It turns out that Theseus has been chosen by Zeus to do battle with Hyperion, and that?s pretty much all you need to know, before settling down to a couple of hours of medieval fantasy battling. Anyone familiar with 300 will know the score here. Story isn?t Immortals? strength, instead giving way to wave after wave of blockbuster carnage. There?s some terrific CG work at play here, too, that makes good use of 3D. And rarely isn?t something of note happening on the screen. The extra features are good, with the Blu-ray boasting a pair of alternative endings, along with a different opening too. The ones chosen for the final cut edge them out, but it?s interesting to see what else was considered. There?s some more traditional deleted material, too, and some welcome insights courtesy of the behind the scenes footage. It all rounds off a strong package, for a relentlessly entertaining film, warts and all. --Jon Foster

Life of Pi - Limited Edition Steelbook (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + UV Copy) | Blu Ray | (29/04/2013)
from £26.70 | Saving you £4.29 (13.80%) | RRP
There are only so many filmmakers fearless or foolhardy enough to tackle a challenging novel, like Yann Martel's Life of Pi, but adaptation specialist Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain) was well positioned to take it on. As a structuring device, he uses an interview between a journalist (Rafe Spall) and Pi Patel (The Namesake's Irrfan Khan), a Montreal immigrant with an unusual back story. As he tells the writer, his parents oversaw a zoo in French-Indian Pondicherry, and he found himself drawn to the Bengal tiger, Richard Parker--the name resulted from a clerical error--but his father (Adil Hussain) warned him to stay away. On his own, Pi became entranced by Islam, Hinduism, and Catholicism, which comes in handy when his family relocates to Canada by freighter and a brutal storm--as believably horrific as anything in Titanic--leaves Pi (now played by Suraj Sharma) stranded in a lifeboat with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena, and the tiger. Soon, it's just Richard and Pi struggling against the elements for 227 days, and since he doesn't want to end up as cat food, he spends most of his time in a makeshift raft attached to the boat. It's giving nothing away to say that he makes it out alive, but the point of the journey remains more enigmatic, since fate tests Pi's faith at every turn. Whether that makes this visually spectacular film a religious allegory or not, Richard (a marvel of CGI technology) remains the biggest mystery of all. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Clash of the Titans (Blu-ray 3D) | Blu Ray | (09/05/2011)
from £9.00 | Saving you £3.30 (13.20%) | RRP
"Release the Kraken!" Ah, it could only be Clash of the Titans, the 2010 remake that retains the instruction to unleash the great beastie from the sea. The 1981 original boasted Ray Harryhausen's legendary stop-motion technique of animating various mythological creatures--it was his final feature project--and given the cornball approach of the movie in general, that was the main draw. The remake supplies new state-of-the-art special effects (released theatrically in 3-D) and a nicely muscular sense of momentum. Sam Worthington (the Avatar guy) plays Perseus, a demigod who doesn't know that Zeus (Liam Neeson) is his father. Perseus is selected to lead an expedition to find and slay the Medusa, lest Zeus's evil brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes, in fine slinking mode) rain down misery upon a seaport--and you just know that means the Kraken is coming. Ye gods, it's a mess, and we haven't even mentioned the witches and the harpies and the giant scorpions. But if we did, it would be clear that Clash of the Titans is a perfectly dandy popcorn epic, unpretentious and punchy. Director Louis Leterrier (Transporter 2) gets a fine rhythm going during Perseus's trek, and you can even forgive the hokey shafts-of-light-through-clouds look of Olympus. Leterrier also had the good sense to import the marvelous Danish star Mads Mikkelsen to provide mentoring duties to Perseus; Gemma Arterton and Alexa Davalos fulfill the eye-candy roles. It's up to individual viewers to choose which they prefer--Harryhausen's magically hand-wrought creations (his Medusa sequence is an absolute killer) or the 21st century's slick computer-generated variations. But nostalgia aside, it would be hard to deny that this is one case where the remake tops the original. --Robert Horton
