From Lemmy filmmaker Wes Orshoski comes the story of the long-ignored pioneers of punk: The Damned. The long-ignored pioneers of punk, The Damned started out as trailblazers on London's 70s punk rock scene, being the first British punk band to release a single, the immortal New Rose in 1976. They were the first of their band's genre to release an album, and the first to tour the United States, performing to sell out crowds, where they left a lasting musical legacy. However the critical adoration lavished on contemporaries like The Clash and Sex Pistols always eluded them. Shot around the globe over three years, the film charts the band's complex history and infighting. It captures the band on a world tour and follows its estranged former members striking out on their own anniversary tour. With contributions from Chrissie Hynde, Mick Jones (The Clash), Lemmy and members of Pink Floyd, Black Flag, Guns 'N' Roses, the Sex Pistols, Blondie and The Buzzcocks.

  • The Pretenders - Greatest Hits [2000] The Pretenders - Greatest Hits | DVD | (22/01/2001) from £11.48  |  Saving you £-1.49 (-14.90%)  |  RRP £9.99

The Pretenders Greatest Hits is a selection of 20 songs and their variously successful videos. Chrissie Hynde arrived in the UK in 1973, and after a period as the "Loud Yank" NME journalist, she realised her dream of putting a band together. "Stop Your Sobbing" was a terrific first single for The Pretenders, debuting a voice that defied comparison or description. Naturally it's included here. Chrissie hated the early videos for her songs, especially "Brass in Pocket", which was one of the very first shown on MTV. She relays this sort of information to camera in the terrific documentary, "No Turn Left Unstoned", featured on this DVD. Comments come in from Rosanna Arquette, ex-managers, Elvis Costello, Bono, and her oldest friend. The overall opinion of the singer-writer that comes across in these interviews is one of an irreverent genius, not afraid to speak her mind (as in her passionate standing for animal rights through the organisation PETA ("People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals"). The band's turbulent history is chronicled through drug-related deaths, firing and re-hiring, motherhood, and the controversial use of the F word on stage, back when such things were shocking. There have been Pretenders greatest hits collections before, but this is expanded with "Human" and "Popstar" from the 1999 Viva El Amor album. --Paul Tonks

Washington DC-based PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is the most influential organisation of its kind in the US with support across the media and fashion industry. Recorded in New York in 2001, and hosted by the ever-enthusiastic Paul McCartney, this show throws in everything from self-conscious alternative comedy turns to Sarah McLaughlin's musical tribute to the late Linda McCartney--whose championing of animal welfare is reflected in video clips. There's the presentation of the PETA award in her memory to Pamela Anderson-Lee, as well as an amusing interlude featuring the shopping mall antics of veggie turn-on Chris P Carrott. The event ends with a shambolic but enjoyable run-through of hits from the B52s, with a guest spot from Chrissie Hynde, then a breezy rendering of rock & roll standards from McCartney and a backing band of seasoned veterans--including neat guitar work from Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour. Throw in a handful of PETA celebrity promos and you've got a video you're unlikely to play often, but which is a varied and entertaining indication of the support this organisation now enjoys. --Richard Whitehouse
