  • The Help [DVD] The Help | DVD | (12/03/2012) from £4.19  |  Saving you £13.80 (76.70%)  |  RRP £17.99

There are male viewers who will enjoy The Help, but Mississippi native Tate Taylor aims his adaptation squarely at the female readers who made Kathryn Stockett's novel a bestseller. If the multi-character narrative revolves around race relations in the Kennedy-era South, the perspective belongs to the women. Veteran maid Aibileen (Doubt's Viola Davis in an Oscar-worthy performance) provides the heartfelt narration that brackets the story. A widow devastated by the death of her son, she takes pride in the 17 children she has helped to raise, but she's hardly fulfilled. That changes when Skeeter (Easy A's Emma Stone) returns home after college. Unlike her peers, Skeeter wants to work, so she gets a job as a newspaper columnist. But she really longs to write about Jackson's domestics, so she meets with Aibileen in secret--after much cajoling and the promise of anonymity. When Aibileen's smart-mouthed friend Minny (breakout star Octavia Spencer) breaches her uptight employer's protocol, Hilly (Bryce Dallas Howard) gives her the boot, and she ends up in the employ of local outcast Celia (Jessica Chastain, hilarious and heartbreaking), who can't catch a break due to her dirt-poor origins. After the murder of Medgar Evers, even more maids, Minny among them, bring their stories to Skeeter, leading to a book that scandalizes the town--in a good way. Not since Steel Magnolias has Hollywood produced a Southern woman's picture more likely to produce buckets of tears (and almost as many laughs). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

  • The Croods [DVD] [2013] The Croods | DVD | (09/12/2013) from £3.78  |  Saving you £15.50 (77.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

Even breakfast is an adventure when you're the last surviving prehistoric family, and the conviction that fear keeps you alive and curiosity will get you killed definitely drives the Crood clan. But Eep (Emma Stone), who's in many ways a typical teenager intent on testing her boundaries and the resolve of her parents (Nicolas Cage and Catherine Keener), yearns for more than hiding out in a dark cave all day. Eep sneaks out of the cave one night and almost gets the whole family killed, but her path crosses with a boy named Guy (Ryan Reynolds), who it seems is destined to change everything for the Crood family. Forced to flee their cave home after it's destroyed, the Croods reluctantly follow Guy on a perilous journey that leads them to discover a whole new world full of breathtaking views, fascinating creatures, and blood-stirring adventure. The animation is lush and gorgeous and the abundance of physical and slapstick humour, especially from Nicolas Cage as Grug and Cloris Leachman as Gran, keeps the plot moving and viewers chuckling throughout the film. What the Crood family's journey eventually reveals is twofold: that focusing on living life and following the light is a viable alternative to hiding in the darkness and that anyone can change. • Zombieland [Blu-ray] Zombieland | Blu Ray | (15/03/2010) from £3.99  |  Saving you £21.00 (84.00%)  |  RRP £24.99

In hit zom-com splatterfest Zombieland cautious Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) survives the apocalypse alone until he meets reckless Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) and two female scam-artists. Can they survive the undead and each other long enough to reach zombie-free California? Directed by Ruben Fleischer in his feature-length film debut Zombieland is a Shaun Of The Dead-inspired comedy road movie starring Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg as two survivors of a zombie apocalypse thrown together in an unlikely but highly amusing partnership. Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg - The Squid And The Whale) with his zombie survival guide in-hand has only survived this long because he's so afraid of everyone and everything. Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson - 2012) means to take down as many zombies as he can on his obsessional quest for Twinkies. When a chance encounter leads the two to form a partnership little do they realise it will take them on the post-apocalyptic adventure to end them all. With mischievous female double-act Wichita and Little Rock on the scene and millions of walking dead shuffling the great expanse of the US things are never dull in Zombieland! Play.com Review Combining the best bits of horror comedy with elements of the classic buddy movie setup Zombieland is one of the most refreshing movies in a long while and the most successful undead flick at the box office. Originally conceived as a TV show - the movie was to be the pilot - Zombieland is brilliantly funny from the get-go - the opening credit sequence backed by Metallica's For Whom the Bell Tolls is worth the price of the Blu-ray alone. Whilst Columbus' 33 rules for zombie survival provide some crafty setups and witty visual punch lines it's Woody Harrelson's Tallahassee who steals the show with a smattering of Deliverance nods (You've got a purty mouth) and some wonderfully OTT moments - he just loves taking out those zombies! The introduction of Witchita (Emma Stone - Superbad) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin - Little Miss Sunshine) injects some much-needed femininity to proceedings but they're no shrinking violets oh no. Despite all the gore and comedy the film often finds time for more touching scenes although it's never afraid to throw in absurdly humorous complications (as witnessed when they descend upon a certain film star's LA mansion) to spice things up. Accompanied by an awesome soundtrack collecting tracks including Raconteurs' Band Of Horses' No One's Gonna Love You and Velvet Underground's the music choices are just as imaginative as the movie itself. Definitely a contender for the best movie of 2009 with Moon and District 9 we could go on about it all day but we're running out of space. As Tallahassee himself says at one point channelling the spirit of Babe That'll be all pig.

Set in the 1920s on the opulent Riviera in the south of France Woody Allen’s MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT is a romantic comedy about a master magician (Colin Firth) trying to expose a psychic medium (Emma Stone) as a fake. Chinese conjuror Wei Ling Soo is the most celebrated magician of his age but few know that he is the stage persona of Stanley Crawford (Firth) a grouchy and arrogant Englishman with a sky-high opinion of himself and an aversion to phony spiritualists’ claims that they can perform real magic. Persuaded by his life-long friend Howard Burkan (Simon McBurney) Stanley goes on a mission to the Côte d’Azur mansion of the Catledge family: mother Grace (Jacki Weaver) son Brice (Hamish Linklater) and daughter Caroline (Erica Leerhsen). He presents himself as a businessman named Stanley Taplinger in order to debunk the alluring young clairvoyant Sophie Baker (Stone) who is staying there with her mother (Marcia Gay Harden). Sophie arrived at the Catledge villa at the invitation of Grace who is convinced that Sophie can help her contact her late husband and once there attracted the attention of Brice who has fallen for her head over heels. From his very first meeting with Sophie Stanley dismisses her as an insignificant pip-squeak who he can unmask in no time scoffing at the family’s gullibility. To his great surprise and discomfort however Sophie accomplishes numerous feats of mind-reading and other supernatural deeds that defy all rational explanation leaving him dumbfounded. Before long Stanley confesses to his beloved Aunt Vanessa (Eileen Atkins) that he has begun to wonder whether Sophie’s powers could actually be real. If they were to be true Stanley realizes that anything might be possible even good and his entire belief system would come crashing down. What follows is a series of events that are magical in every sense of the word and send the characters reeling. In the end the biggest trick MAGIC IN THE MOONLIGHT plays is the one that fools us all.
