  • Something Borrowed [DVD] Something Borrowed | DVD | (29/08/2011) from £5.69  |  Saving you £14.30 (71.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

Chick-lit lovers, and those who love them, will flock to Something Borrowed, a frothy adaptation of Emily Giffin's bestselling novel. Something Borrowed itself borrows some of the best bits from earlier romantic comedies like When Harry Met Sally?, 27 Dresses, and Sex and the City. Though Kate Hudson is the ostensible Big Star here, it's Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love, He's Just Not That into You) who finally comes into her own as a winsome leading lady. The plot is fairly simple: Rachel (Goodwin) harbours secret feelings for Dex (Colin Egglesfield), the fiancé of her best friend, Darcy (Hudson). Along for the ride, and acting as a sort of stage manager/narrator à la Our Town, is Ethan (John Krasinski), who just may be harbouring some secret longings of his own. Will the right boys end up with the right girls? Well, Something Borrowed is one of those comfy films in which the viewer knows who's right for whom long before the characters do. And because of the light, easy direction of Luke Greenfield (whose previous works are mostly TV movies and series), and the sparky chemistry among the stars, Something Borrowed ends up delivering a delicious snack even more satisfying than the sum of its yummy parts. Krasinski, Egglesfield, and especially Goodwin shine in this ensemble, and fans of modern love stories--with a twist--will want to hold on to Something Borrowed. --A.T. Hurley

  • How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days [2003] How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days | DVD | (06/10/2003) from £3.49  |  Saving you £14.50 (80.60%)  |  RRP £17.99

Kate Hudson twinkles as the heroine of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. She's a magazine writer assigned to date a guy, make all the mistakes girls make that drive guys away (being clingy, talking in baby-talk and so on) and records the process like a sociological experiment. However, the guy she picks-- Matthew McConaughey--is an advertising executive who's just bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days; if he succeeds, he'll win a huge account that will make his career. The set-up is completely absurd, but the collision of their efforts to woo and repel creates some pretty funny scenes. McConaughey's easy charm and Hudson's lightweight impishness play well together and the plot, though strictly Hollywood formula, chugs along efficiently. At moments Hudson seems to channel her mother, Goldie Hawn, to slightly unnerving effect. --Bret Fetzer

  • Almost Famous [2001] Almost Famous | DVD | (10/09/2001) from £2.69  |  Saving you £17.30 (86.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

A nostalgic, bittersweet ode to the hedonistic rock 'n' roll days of the early 1970s, Almost Famous is Cameron Crowe's most personal, deeply felt film (he even cowrote the original songs with wife Nancy Wilson). "Does anybody remember laughter?" asks one of the characters in a Led Zeppelin reference that typifies how the film works both for those who, like Crowe, remember and love the times and its music, and those who can only look back in wonder at an era when rock music was about something more than just marketing. Closely based on his own coming-of-age experiences as a teenage journalist for Rolling Stone magazine, the story follows the director's alter ego William Miller (sympathetic newcomer Patrick Fugit) on the journey of a lifetime touring with fictional rock band Stillwater, struggling to get the all-important interview, losing his virginity, falling in love, and trying to fend off his obsessively concerned mother (Frances McDormand). Kate Hudson as the "band-aid" (not groupie) Penny Lane is the film's magnetic centrepiece; Billy Crudup plays Stillwater's temperamental and egocentric lead guitarist perfectly; and Philip Seymour Hoffman steals the show as jaded rock journo Lester Bangs, the very personification of "uncool" whose ardent love for music--good, honest music--is at the very heart of this film. "I have to go home" says William on the Stillwater tour bus in one of the many emotionally truthful moments that permeate this wonderful film; "You are home", Penny Lane tells him. On the DVD: This is an attractive anamorphic 1.85:1 picture, and the fantastic soundtrack gets the Dolby 5.1 treatment. The extra features include the complete performance of Stillwater's Zeppelin-esque "Fever Dog" and a good 25-minute HBO "making-of" featurette with contributions from all the principals ("I really liked hanging out with all the girls on the set", says Patrick Fugit with a straight face). Navigate the special features menus by following the red Stratocasters and find Cameron Crowe's six articles for Rolling Stone that reveal how closely the film is based on his experiences on the road with the Allman Brothers Band and Led Zeppelin. There are also four trailers (only one for this film, oddly), and text-based Filmographies and Production Notes. No commentary, though. --Mark Walker DVD Special Features: HBO Making of Featurette Rolling Stone Article--Original Text be Cameron Crowe Stillwater's "Fever Dog" Music Video Filmographies Production Notes Trailer Animated & Interactive Menus 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen (enhanced for 16:9 TVs) Dolby 5.1 English, Spanish Subtitles: English, Spanish, Portuguese

  • Gossip [2000] Gossip | DVD | (26/02/2001) from £2.95  |  Saving you £2.55 (18.20%)  |  RRP £13.99

Gossip is one of a spate of movies that owe a lot to Cruel Intentions. This time it's rich kids in college, but other than that Gossip stays well within the beautiful-young-people-doing-awful-things-to-each other formula. Lena Heady plays Jones, obviously the Smart Girl because she is briefly seen wearing glasses. Jones hangs out with Arty Guy Travis and Handsome Rich Guy Derrick, who finances their adventures and has a little bit of a lying habit. The three are all in the same journalism class (acidic monologist Eric Bogosian plays the acidic professor) and decide to start and track a rumour for their term papers. They pick rich and beautiful couple Beau and Naomi (Joshua Jackson and Kate Hudson) as the focus of the rumour, and before you know it their juicy story starts spinning out of control into ugly territory and a truly ludicrous climax. There are attempts at making sledgehammer points about the slippery task of finding Truth, but mostly Gossip is about the guilty pleasure of watching pretty young actors be mean to each other. You'll hate yourself in the morning, but watch it anyway. --Ali Davis, Amazon.com
