Dog Soldiers (Dir. Neil Marshall 2002): A visceral horror about a squad of British soldiers on a routine training exercise in the wilds of Scotland. Their greatest worry is missing the football until they stumble upon Captain Ryan - the sole survivor of a Special Operations team literally torn to pieces. Ryan refuses to reveal the secret of his mission even though whoever ate his men is keen for second helpings. Luckily local girl Megan leads them to a deserted farmhouse deep in the forest but when they realise that this is home to a pack of vicious werewolves it's apparent their nightmare has only just begun. Sean Pertwee stars as the sardonic sergeant with Kevin McKidd as the heroic private and Liam Cunningham as the utterly twisted Ryan. With only each other to rely on the battle between men and monsters is also a battle amongst themselves - in which loyalty bravery and ingenuity is truly put to the test. The Descent (Dir.Neil Marshall 2005): When a young group of female friends go on a climbing expedition they find a lot more than they bargained for. Lost in a cave off the maps they encounter a race of barely human cannibalistic subterraneans who are very very hungry... 28 Days Later (Dir. Danny Boyle 2002): In this film from director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland a powerful virus is unleashed on the British public following a raid on a primate research facility by animal rights activists. Transmitted in a drop of blood and devastating within seconds the virus locks those infected into a permanent state of murderous rage. Within 28 days the country is overwhelmed and a handful of survivors begin their attempts to salvage a future little realising that the deadly virus is not the only thing that threatens them...

The Descent (UK, 2005) Written and Directed by: Neil Marshall Starring: Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Jackson Mendoza, Alex Reid One of the best times Ive recently had watching a movie; The Descent knows its job and does it well. Its the horror story of a group of British women who travel to the Appalachians for some adventure and excitement deep in a supposed tourist cave. Only when theyve gone too far do they find out the cave was actually unclaimed by mankind, anyway. The creation of writer/director Neil Marshall, who also wrote and directed the highly entertaining Dog Soldiers, The Descent is straightforward and scary. Yes, the synopsis has you thinking of The Cave, but these two films differ in at least one important factor: You should actually watch this one. Im sure there are more, but I dont plan on giving 90 minutes of my life to that other movie. Dog Soldiers was slightly hampered by its special effects, which werent necessarily bad but simply werent used effectively in some scenes. Im a fan of the if-it-looks-dumb-dont-show-it technique, where you arent allowed to see enough of a disappointing costume or creation to laugh at it. Instead, its hiding in the shadows or some other technical trickery is used to fool your eye. The Descent lends itself well to shadows and minimal lighting, but the creature effects are still excellent and the gore makes you squirm.

THE DESCENT: PART 2 is the long awaited sequel to one of the most intense, unpredictable and thrilling horror films of the decade. Sarah (Shauna Macdonald), emerges dazed, bloodied and half-wild with fear from a cave system in the Appalachian mountains. The local Sheriff is sceptical of her account of events and, convinced that her psychosis hides far darker secrets, forces her back into the caves to search for her five missing friends, unaware that a new breed of crawlers awaits them. More evolved and viciously feral than Sarah has ever faced. Special Finish: Matte finish with emboss
