  • There Will Be Blood [DVD] There Will Be Blood | DVD | (30/05/2011) from £5.99  |  Saving you £14.00 (70.00%)  |  RRP £19.99

A brutal bloody and gripping saga of obsession corruption and poisonous greed; Paul Thomas Anderson's Award Winning There Will Be Blood is a masterly unwavering inspection of a consummately evil man whose trailblazing spirit is equalled only by his murderous ambition. In the dying years of the nineteenth century Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) a struggling silver miner realises that true wealth lies in oil extraction. Driven by a passionate hatred for others and an intense psychological need to see competitors fail he heads for the oil-rich land of California in a bid to manipulate and exploit the landowners of dust-worn Little Boston in to selling him their properties. Forefront of the town is self-styled `faith healer' Eli Sunday (Paul Dano) who is structuring his own sinister plan to funnel the residents' impending wealth into his self-founded church. As Plainview's empire expands so does his obsession with the intrinsic value of power and he becomes increasingly irascible and paranoid along the way. What follows is a vindictive ruthless and violent chain of events as Plainview fails to deliver on promises as he pits himself against the town's perturbed and unstable charismatic teenage preacher. In addition to stunning visuals and an exceptional captivating score from accomplished composer (and Radiohead guitarist) Jonny Greenwood director Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia) owes his best work to date to the incredible Academy Award winning performance as Plainview by Daniel Day-Lewis and the staggering portrayal of Eli Sunday by Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine). Bearing similarities to Citizen Kane and Giant There Will Be Blood is an intelligent thought-provoking and powerfully-eccentric epic masterpiece that is as enchanting as it is timeless.

  • Where The Wild Things Are [DVD] [2009] Where The Wild Things Are | DVD | (10/05/2010) from £3.87  |  Saving you £12.00 (75.00%)  |  RRP £15.99

Through his handcrafted ode to the trials of childhood, Spike Jonze puts his own unique imprint on Maurice Sendak's enduring classic. In the prologue, 9-year-old Max (Max Records) stomps around the house, feeling neglected. When his mom (Catherine Keener) sends him to bed without supper, Max runs away (something he doesn't do in the book). He finds a boat and sails to a distant land where fuzzy monsters are raising a rumpus in the forest. Since his wolf suit allows him to fit right in, he joins the fray, catching the eye of Carol (James Gandolfini), who notes, approvingly, "I like the way you destroy stuff. There's a spark to your work that can't be taught." With that, they pronounce the diminutive creature king, hoping he can bring cohesion to their fractured family. After Max comes across Carol's scale-model town, he decides they should build a real one, but the project stalls as Alexander (Paul Dano) and Douglas (Chris Cooper) mope, Judith (Catherine O'Hara) browbeats Ira (Forest Whitaker), and Carol pines for K.W. (Lauren Ambrose), who prefers the company of owls Bob and Terry. Max realises he has to make a choice: stay with the wild things or return home, where he has to keep his aggressive impulses in check. For readers of Sendak's slim tome, his decision won't come as a surprise, but Jonze ends the story on a lovely grace note. Until that time, the squabbling is a bit much--these monsters never stop talking--but Jonze, cowriter Dave Eggers, the Jim Henson Company, and singer/songwriter Karen O. have gone all-out to re-create the inner world of a child with as much empathy as was mustered for the inner adult world of Jonze's Being John Malkovich. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
