  • You Must Be Joking - The Complete Series [DVD] You Must Be Joking - The Complete Series | DVD | (25/06/2012) from £8.72  |  Saving you £8.06 (40.30%)  |  RRP £19.99

In 1973, a one-off Magpie film looked at London's streets and markets through the eyes of children attending Islington's Anna Scher Children s Theatre. Showing how the children interpreted daily life in their drama classes, Kids About Town caught the eye of producer Roger Price (The Tomorrow People), who suggested the Anna Sher kids be given their own series. You must be joking! replied the controller of children's programming; That s what we ll call it, suggested Roger...A wry, energetic and irreverent comedy show of a kind never previously seen and certainly not one for the easily offended! You Must Be Joking duly launched an unknown bunch of kids onto the TV screen. Led by writer-performers Ray Burdis and John Blundell, and featuring future BAFTA winner (and drama academy founder) Pauline Quirke, the talented teenagers were 'supervised' by comedian and long-suffering lone adult Jim Bowen. In between topical and satirical sketches, Elvis Payne took a cynical look at the week's news, and live music came from youthful popsters Flintlock, led by the multi-talented Michael Holoway. Many of the show's stars would go on to enjoy successful careers in television.

  • Pauline's Quirkes - The Complete Series [DVD] Pauline's Quirkes - The Complete Series | DVD | (04/06/2012) from £9.05  |  Saving you £3.94 (30.30%)  |  RRP £12.99

Pauline's Quirkes, a light-hearted, provocative magazine-style show for teenagers, provided an early showcase for the talents of one of Britain's best-loved stars. After playing a leading role in Thames' You Must Be Joking!, the 16-year-old Pauline took centre-stage in this teatime spin-off series, presenting a lively mix of comedy sketches, music and features. Teen pop idols Flintlock provided the songs while unleashing outbreaks of hysteria among the studio audience, and Pauline's co-presenters included future Birds of a Feather co-star Linda Robson.Irreverent, often risqu humour (usually at the expense of the Flintlock boys) and discussion of the pressing issues of the day (should boys be allowed to wear skirts to school?) raised eyebrows and blazed a trail for a new kind of show aimed at teenage audiences. This set contains the complete series, also featuring DJs Mike Read and Steve Wright, and master magician Ali Bongo.

  • Broadchurch (Special Edition) [Blu-ray] Broadchurch (Special Edition) | Blu Ray | (04/11/2013) from £8.98  |  Saving you £15.30 (61.20%)  |  RRP £24.99

When ITV first started screening Broadchurch, ostenisbly a murder mystery from the mind of Chris Chibnall, it didn't really get an awful lot of attention. Sure, the strong cast, led by David Tennant and Olivia Colman, meant it got noticed. But detective whodunnits are hardly rare. However, as the weeks went by on original transmission, Broadchurch escalated, and by the end, large parts of the nation were gripped by one of the best mysteries to have screened in many, many years. No wonder a second series was swiftly announced. This first one introduces us to the apparently quiet town of Broadchurch in south England. There, an 11-year schoolboy has gone missing, as two detectives, who hardly get on, are forced to join together to get to the bottom of what's happened. But all is not what it seems in Broadchurch, and to say any more would spoil the undoubted fun in watching it all unfold. For this is premier quality drama. Tennant and Colman are excellent, but the ensemble cast bring a collection of excellent, believable performances too. It's the writing that lifts things, though, and you can't help but be gripped as the story unravels. As well as the excellent show itself, the disc release also features a look behind the scenes of Broadchurch, along with background material. But it's that main drama that's the undoubted attraction, and one that's aching to be rewatched once seen, if only to pick up all the clues you might just have missed... --Jon Foster

Although recognised as part of Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe cycle (its title comes from a Poe poem), The Haunted Palace has a much more significant place in film history for being the first high-profile adaptation of the work of H.P. Lovecraft, in this case his novella The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Ward is one of two characters played by Vincent Price, the other being Ward's great-great-grandfather Joseph Curwen, burned as a warlock 110 years before. When Ward returns to the village of Arkham to reclaim the family mansion, his striking resemblance to his ancestor is just the first of many macabre events that proceed to unfold, including the screen debut of Lovecraft's legendary Necronomicon. As before, Corman and his team worked wonders with their modest budget, with Daniel Haller's sets amongst the most elaborate in all the Poe cycle, enhanced by genuinely creepy moments such as the crowd of deformed villagers still living under Curwen's curse.
