  • Person of Interest S1-5 [DVD] Person of Interest S1-5 | DVD | (11/09/2017) from £39.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

PERSON OF INTEREST is a crime thriller about a presumed-dead former CIA agent, John Reese, who teams up with mysterious billionaire Harold Finch to prevent violent crimes with high-tech surveillance and their own brand of vigilante justice. Reese's special training in covert operations appeals to Finch, a software genius who invented a program, aka The Machine, that can identify people soon to be involved in violent crimes. Tapping into ubiquitous surveillance feeds throughout the city, the two work outside of the law, combining Reese's black ops skills with Finch's technological prowess and unlimited wealth to unravel the mystery of the person of interest, and stop the crime before it happens. Reese's actions draw the attention of the NYPD, including by-the-book homicide detective Joss Carter. After initially pursuing Reese as a criminal, Carter now shares in his pursuit of justice. Also working with Reese and Finch is Detective Lionel Fusco, a onetime corrupt cop who began as Reese's unwilling pawn, but now views their missions as a chance at personal redemption. With infinite crimes to investigate, Reese and Finch find that the right person, with the right information, at the right time, can change everything.

  • The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button [2008] The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button | DVD | (08/06/2009) from £2.76  |  Saving you £17.23 (86.20%)  |  RRP £19.99

The deservedly multi-award nominated The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button sees David Fincher team up with his Fight Club star Brad Pitt. Pitt plays Benjamin Button, a man born in an old peron's body who in turn ages backwards. While the premise may seem a little mind-boggling for some, Eric Roth (the writer behind Forrest Gump) and Robin Swicord's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story is poetic, epic and intimate all at once. Critics have moaned about its length, but for the story and the characters to become a part of you, this film could not have been any shorter. The Currious Case Of Benjamin Button is a magical tale about love, understanding and acceptance, all themes ridiculously relevant in our time. Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett's chemistry lights up the screen. Together with Fincher and the outstanding supporting cast (inlcuding Tilda Swinton, Oscar nominated Taraji P. Henson and Julia Ormond), the tale of little Benjamin Button is uplifting and original. Giving away any scenes or technical effects would be ruining the magic. --Jennifer Kilchenmann

  • Baby Boy [2001] Baby Boy | DVD | (05/08/2002) from £2.34  |  Saving you £17.65 (88.30%)  |  RRP £19.99

In Baby Boy, made a decade after his Boyz N the Hood director John Singleton presents a contrasting yet contained statement on the young African-American man of today. The story is a powerful construct of inevitabilities. Jody (Tyrese Gibson), an unemployed 20-year-old wants to avoid the do-or-die ethic that's lost him a brother and any perspective on real responsibilities. With children by different girlfriends, and an unhealthy disrespect for his 36-year-old mother (AJ Johnson) it seems like only a matter of time before tragedy strikes. But there are surprises here. Framed in a small-dream fantasy, the story occasionally slips into interpretative metaphor. Baby Boy is about choices. Characters from the past, including the electric turns by Ving Rhames and Snoop Dogg, are choices catching up with Jody. The equally stellar performances from Taraji Henson as girlfriend Yvette and the scowling Omar Gooding as vague best friend Sweetpea are choices yet to be faced. This is undoubtedly a message movie about the supposed ramifications of racism, but ultimately it's a compassionate advocation of individuality. On the DVD: Baby Boy on disc has an outstanding extras package. An energetic commentary from Singleton makes the movie viewing experience very personal. There are featurettes, music videos, deleted and alternate scenes, bloopers, filmographies, trailers and even storyboard comparisons (which usually only accompany FX-heavy movies). Dolby 5.1 sound and a crisp 1.85:1 print present the movie in the best possible way. --Paul Tonks

  • The Karate Kid [Blu-ray] [2010] The Karate Kid | Blu Ray | (19/09/2011) from £2.29  |  Saving you £11.91 (74.50%)  |  RRP £15.99

A remake of the 1984 film of the same name, The Karate Kid well exceeds expectations, delivering a powerful viewing experience filled with action-packed martial arts scenes, great footage of China and its many wonders, and an absorbing story of a preadolescent boy's struggle to find his own inner strength. The title Karate Kid is really a misnomer as it is the art of kung fu that is practiced in this remake, not karate, and other details, including the film's setting in China, also differ from the original film. What remains the same, and just as powerful, is the underlying story: a young boy moves to a new place where he feels isolated and is bullied by his peers. Through an unlikely relationship with an adult, the boy not only learns to protect himself through martial arts, but develops the much more important qualities of respect and the mastery of one's own mind and body. Relative newcomer Jaden Smith (son of actors and producers Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith) is excellent as the main character Dre Parker; Jackie Chan gives a restrained and highly effective performance as his mentor Mr. Han; and Zhenwei Wang is eerily believable as the bully Chen. This is an intense and often violent film that fully engulfs its viewers--be prepared to gasp and cheer out loud, and know that you may never look at the act of putting on and taking off a jacket in the same way again.--Tami Horiuchi
