  • The Incredible Hulk [Blu-ray] [2008] The Incredible Hulk | Blu Ray | (13/10/2008) from £7.99  |  Saving you £17.00 (68.00%)  |  RRP £24.99

A more accessible and less heavy-handed movie than Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk, Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk is a purely popcorn love affair with Marvel's raging, green superhero, as well as the old television series starring Bill Bixby as Dr. David Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the beast within him. Edward Norton takes up where Eric Bana left off in Lee's version, playing Bruce (that's the character's original name) Banner, a haunted scientist always on the move. Trying to eliminate the effects of a military experiment that turns him into the Hulk whenever his emotions get the better of him, Banner is hiding out in Brazil at the film's beginning. Working in a bottling plant and communicating via email with an unidentified professor who thinks he can help, Banner goes postal when General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross and a small army turn up to grab him. Intent on developing whatever causes Banner's metamorphoses into a weapon, Ross brings along a quietly deranged soldier named Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth), who wants Ross to turn him into a supersoldier who can take on the Hulk. The adventure spreads to the U.S., where Banner hooks up with his old lover (and Ross' daughter), Betty (Liv Tyler), and where the Hulk takes on several armed assaults, including one in a pretty unusual location: a college campus. The film's action is impressive, though the computer-generated creature is disappointingly cartoonish, and a second monster turning up late in the movie looks even cheesier. Norton is largely wasted in the film--he's essentially a bridge between sequences where he disappears and the Hulk rampages around. As good an actor as he is, Norton doesn't have the charisma here to carry those scenes in which one waits impatiently for the real show to begin. --Tom Keogh

  • The Musketeer [2002] The Musketeer | DVD | (10/03/2003) from £2.84  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £14.99

On paper Peter Hyams' The Musketeer seems like a very good idea--take the traditional material of reliable swashbucklers and pep it up with a lot of Hong Kong wirework and martial arts--and yet somehow the result is not entirely satisfactory. Part of the trouble is that the script takes The Three Musketeers and strips out much of what has made Dumas' book--and earlier films based on it--unsinkable as a audience favourite. Also part of the trouble is that Justin Chambers' D'Artagnan is pretty, and jumps around well, but lacks the charisma to be a future heroic Marshal of France. Tim Roth plays the one-eyed villain Febre like Alan Rickman on automatic pilot; Stephen Rea's Cardinal Richelieu is meant to be impassive but comes across as bored. Of the famous guest stars, only Catherine Deneuve as an infinitely resourceful Queen of France really gets into the spirit of things. There are likable scenes here, and one or two memorable stunts--like a swordfight in a room full of collapsing ladders--but this Musketeer comes way down in the list of Dumas adaptations, far behind Douglas Fairbanks and the 1970s Dick Lester films. On the DVD: The Musketeer on disc includes not especially illuminating documentaries on the stunts and on the casting of Justin Chambers, as well as text files on the production notes and the filmographies of director and cast. It is presented with a widescreen anamorphic visual aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and has the options of Dolby 5.1 sound in English and French. --Roz Kaveney

  • Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead [DVD] Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead | DVD | (08/02/2016) from £5.69  |  Saving you £14.30 (71.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

Tom Stoppard's modern stage classic finds a pair of film actors worthy of its verbal japery and existential bewilderment: Gary Oldman and Tim Roth are deliciously locked in as the title characters of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. And yet it remains difficult to tell which one is Rosencrantz and which Guildenstern--even they seem unsure--a clever part of Stoppard's ingenious design. Focusing on a pair of unremarkable characters from Hamlet, Stoppard sees the great play from their confused perspective. Now and again the action of Hamlet sweeps them up, but most of the time R&G are left wondering where they are, what they have been sent for, and why they can't remember anything that happened before the beginning of the play. Richard Dreyfuss (fittingly grandiloquent) is the Player King, who seems to know more about the ominous workings of fiction and tragedy than the heroes do. Stoppard's first outing as a film director is handsomely shot but uncertainly paced--although any time Oldman and Roth go into one of their tennis-match debates on probability, identity, or death, the movie crackles. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern may be the "indifferent children of the earth," but for this brief moment they deserve center stage. --Robert Horton
