| Blu Ray

Disaster movie maker Roland Emmerich, whose other hit films include Independence Day and The Day after Tomorrow, has once again struck cinematic gold with his latest breathtaking action-adventure movie 2012.

Drawing on the Mayan prophecy that the world will end on 21st December 2012, Emmerich takes us on a visual journey of gargantuan proportions. The planet is being attacked, but this time it isn't aliens threatening the existence of the human race, its solar flares heating up the earth's core.

Whilst camping with his kids in Yellowstone, failed author Jackson Curtis (John Cussack) comes across a secret military operation. Woody Harrelson, a nutty conspiracy theory radio presenter tells him that the end of the world is nigh and that the government know it. True enough, top scientist Adrian (Ejiofor) is working for the government on a top secret project which will ensure that a selected proportion of the population will survive the impending natural catastrophes.

Jackson attempts to save his children and ex-wife but by the time he reaches them in LA, the chaos has begun - Yellowstone has turned into a supervolcano, whole cities have been destroyed and colossal tsunamis cause devastation across the globe. With time running out, is there anywhere they can escape to?

Apocalyptic action sci-fi from the director of 'Independence Day' (1996) and 'The Day After Tomorrow' (2004) starring John Cusack, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover and Woody Harrelson. The ancient Mayan calendar has predicted that the world will end on 21 December 2012 and scientists have confirmed the prediction as fact, but as the fateful date looms ever closer and tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and typhoons begin to cause devastating destruction, desperate efforts are made across the world to try to prevent or prepare for the inevitable disaster. Jackson Curtis (Cusack), a divorced writer and researcher trying to survive the cataclysm with his daughter, draws on his knowledge of ancient writings to keep them and others who have managed to survive alive.

    Editor Review

Roland Emmerich's 2012 delivers in terms of almighty special effects and popcorn-munching action, but if you're expecting a story deep rooted in Mayan prophecy, then you'll be disappointed. The script, although very clever in parts, is not strong enough to support the epic scope of the movie, however, you can't fault Emmerich's sensational style. Despite its faults, this fantastically over-the-top disaster movie is irresistibly entertaining and makes his other film, Independence Day, look meek.

Unlike all other disaster movies, Impending doom isn't just once event in 2012 - there are solar flares, earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, flooding and plenty of biblical undertones of the great flood - all rolled into one exhilarating but overly long film. This film is a big investment in terms of time, so don't drink too much fizzy drink at the start (you won't last), but the pace and absurdly oversized effects make it worth your while.

As far as the script goes, it's a fundamentally terrible. The human side of the story is underdeveloped, It's delivered in a slap-dash way, is packed-full of clich├ęs and is brimming with gooey sentiment; however there is a cute yappy dog whose survival becomes almost as important to the viewer as the whole Indian population - Emmerich's journey is about excitement and atmosphere - he never takes this film too seriously, so why should you? Just sit back and enjoy it!

2012 is essentially awful, but is charismatic and bigger and louder than any in its genre - whether you like it or not, it will draw you in and leave you with a smile on your face.
