A Prophet Blu Ray

| Blu Ray

Malik El Djebena (played by Tahar Rahim) is 19 years old, illiterate, very naive, and has been condemned to six years in prison for attacking police officers.

While he is inside, French/North African Malik becomes associated with a Corsican Mafia gang, ruled with a rod of iron by the ageing Cesar Luciani (Niels Arestrup). They charge him with several missions to accomplish (including a particularly brutal murder of another inmate) in exchange for their protection. Over time he gradually earns Luciani's trust and becomes the only person The Mafia boss can rely upon. Luciani entrusts him with his business which Malik is supposed to conduct "on the outside" during his day release concessions. Malik, however has his own agenda. He learns to read and write and, with the help of 2 other inmates, sets up his own drug dealing business. He rises up the ranks of the gangland hierarchy until he becomes a powerful figure in his own right.

"A Prophet" (Un Prophete) explores a several contentious issues to do with power, race relations and corruption of the system. It is claustrophobic and disturbing as we are witness to Malik's transformation (both physical and psychological) from an angry young man into a callous prison Boss.

"A Prophet" is a French film (in French with English subtitles) and was directed by Jacques Audiard. It won the "Best Foreign Film" award at the 13th British Independent Film Awards in December 2010. Other awards include the "Grand Prix" at the Cannes Film Festival (2009), "Best Film" at the 53rd London Film Festival, "Best Film not in the English Language" at the 63rd BAFTAs plus quite a few more. It is available on DVD and Blu Ray.

Graphicallly violent, BAFTA-winning prison drama from acclaimed French director Jacques Audiard ('Read My Lips', 'The Beat That My Heart Skipped'). Sentenced to six years in a brutal French prison, 19-year-old petty criminal Malik El Djebena (Tahar Rahim) soon realises he has to learn the ropes if he is to survive. With the inmates mostly members of either Corsican or Arab gangs, Malik finds himself having to carry out a series of brutal rites of passage as the leader of the prison's Corsican gang Cesar Luciani (Niels Arestrup) orders him to carry out a number of 'missions' aimed at proving his allegiance. As Malik rises to the challenges he is set, gaining respect from his peers, and with his confidence and power growing, he begins to develop his own plans, placing him on a collision course with his gang boss.
