  Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's London Calling: Live In Hyde Park concert film is a two DVD set of the Boss and his band's performance at London's Hard Rock Calling Festival on June 28 2009 in HD. The 172-minute film documents 27 tracks of live Springsteen that begin in daylight and progress through a gorgeous sunset into night. The set list spans from the Born To Run era to Working On a Dream and includes rare covers such as The Clash's London Calling Jimmy Cliff's Trapped The Young Rascals' Good Lovin' and Eddie Floyd's Raise Your Hand. Springsteen also performs fan favorite Hard Times (Come Again No More) written by Stephen Foster in 1854. Brian Fallon from The Gaslight Anthem joins the band as a guest vocalist on Springsteen's own No Surrender.   It's hard not to watch This Is It without feeling a mixture of sorrow and elation. When he passed away in the summer of 2009, Michael Jackson was in the midst of rehearsals for his final tour, an ambitious 50-date engagement. In editing 120 hours of rehearsal footage together, Jackson producer Kenny Ortega proves that it would've been an event for the ages. Michael performs material that spans his career, from a Motown medley to multi-platinum hits from Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. Though he hadn't toured in 10 years, it becomes instantly apparent, despite rumours to the contrary, that Jackson was still in full possession of that unmistakable voice--high-pitched whoops and all--and that he still had the gravity-defying moves of a man half his age. Jackson and Ortega also collaborated on some real showstoppers, such as a graveyard-set "Thriller"; an imposing "They Don't Care About Us," in which several dancers appear to morph into thousands; and a film noir sequence in which the singer slides in and out of Gilda and other black-and-white classics, singing "Smooth Criminal" all the while. Not everything works, like the Jackson 5 numbers, in which he flubs a few lyrics, claiming that his earpiece isn't working properly, but as he readily acknowledges, "That's what rehearsal is for." It's a tragedy that he didn't get the chance to share this dazzling show with the world, but Ortega allows fans to feel as if it actually happened--at least onscreen. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

  In Leonard Cohens Lonesome Heroes the scope and detail of Cohens artistic inspirations is put under the microscope to quite fascinating result. Cohens first love was poetry and in the works of the Spanish poet Garcia Lorca and his fellow Canadian Irving Layton he found the words that moved him to create his own verse. The beat writers too hit a note with Leonard and their work has lived with him throughout his career. It may not come as a surprise to find Bob Dylan and Judy Collins as part of this index but perhaps a less acknowledged genre of interest to Cohen is Country music - however he was deeply affected by performers such as Hank Williams Hank Snow and the country recordings of Ray Charles. And the fact Cohens records have always achieved greater success in Europe than in North America may partly be due to his love of the Belgian chansonnier Jacques Brel. These and many others artists are here shown to have played a crucial role in the formation of Leonard Cohen's muse. But religion and spirituality too have played an enormous role in Leonards life and music particularly the faith into which he was born Judaism and his more recent study of Buddhism which drove him to spend several years in a monastery meditating for hours every day.

  Oddsac is a 55 minute feature film collaboration between the band Animal Collective and filmmaker Danny Perez which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2010 and has screened to sold-out audiences in dozens of US cities. The film was co- conceived by and stars Animal Collective whose 2009 album Merriweather Post Pavilion was named album of the year by SPIN Entertainment Weekly and Pitchfork and topped critic's end of year lists worldwide. Oddsac is a dense and surreal layering of audio and visual elements that eschews conventional narrative to create a visceral viewing experience. Oddsac represents a new synthesis of music and film a visual album whose songs will not be released in any other form. It features an original score with new songs from the band and complex digital manipulation by Perez a debut filmmaker and visual artist known for his concert projections with musicians such as Black Dice and Panda Bear. Perez and Animal Collective have also collaborated on two music videos (Who Could Win A Rabbit and Summertime Clothes) and a major art installation piece Transverse Temporal Gyrus which occupied the entire Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Oddsac is the result of over four years of intense collaboration between Perez and the band.
