Mahler: Symphony No. 5 | DVD | (05/04/2000)
from £5.22 | Saving you £5.56 (27.80%) | RRP
Barenboim's Mahler Five begins with a certain sense of detachment and continues that way, seeming both calculated and calculating by turns. The composer's famous aphorism about the process of symphonic composition being in the nature of "building a world" is quoted in the excellent and detailed booklet notes (no shortage of scholarship here), so it's intriguing to observe how Barenboim chooses to contain the warmth and passion inherent in the work. In building a world, perhaps, one must perforce define its boundaries, yet at the same time it's this very process of containment that draws attention to these qualities. Musically, then, this is undoubtedly an interesting piece of work. In production terms, we're offered a very good argument for the DVD as a vehicle for orchestral performance. What may appear at first glance to be irritatingly skittish camerawork is in fact a perfect demonstration of how careful direction can draw attention to particular areas of the orchestra at exactly the right moment. The sound quality, though aggressively digital, is airy and detailed. --Roger Thomas

from £4.29 | Saving you £4.70 (52.30%) | RRP
Formed in the West Midlands in 1987 Ned s Atomic Dustbin were named after an episode of The Goon Show. The Ned's slotted perfectly into the indie rock scene which was flourishing in the late 80's and early 90's in the UK with their guitar heavy thrash gaining widespread approval. Their fanatically loyal fanbase became known for adding a stage diving/moshing general mayhem feel to their gigs and the Ned's toured and added vibrancy to dates with The Wonder Stuff Mega City Four Senseless Things Jesus Jones and many others. Despite 5 Top 40 singles in the early 90's the band went their own ways in 1995 but reformed in 2000 for a Christmas show in Dudley West Midlands returning to their roots. The show was an enormous success and has been repeated every year since. This DVD was shot in 1993 and was their first scripted movie and contains 3 UK top 40's together with 2 overseas Top 40 hits. Tracklist: 1. Trust 2. Scrawl (New) 3. Grey Cell Green (U.S Promo) 4. Spring (New) 5. Not Sleeping Around 6. Intact 7. Walking Through Syrup 8. Who Goes First 9. Featuring Mr. Baine Jakey

The Golden Ring | DVD | (08/07/2002)
from £N/A | Saving you £N/A (N/A%) | RRP
When The Golden Ring was aired on the BBC in 1965, it was the longest music documentary ever made. And though now Humphrey Burton's 90-minute black and white film about Georg Solti's landmark recording of Gotterdammerung seems rather rough and naïve in its use of basic documentary techniques, the excitement it conveys about the gargantuan Ring cycle project is still palpable. Underlings scuttle about, engineers endlessly fiddle with knobs, and Decca producer John Culshaw oversees the largest recording project ever undertaken with the command of a great military general. The technical insights are fascinating: all the sound mixing has to be done immediately, for instance, and echo effects are created by placing certain instruments in different rooms with closed-circuit TV cameras giving them Solti's beat. Culshaw's legendary attention to detail is also noted: he had obsolete stierhorns made especially for Hagen's call to the Gibichung vassals. Burton's documentary style is a little awkward, and his use of cut-aways and fades now seems antiquated. But he is sensible enough to allow generous portions of the music to speak for themselves, and the closing scene--Birgit Nilsson singing Brunnhilde's immolation--is simply heart-stopping. Despite the roughness, this film undoubtedly still captures one of the greatest moments in the history of classical music recording. On the DVD: The Golden Ring, as you might expect from a 1965 documentary, has patchy sound and picture quality (from a mixture of video and 16mm film). Occasionally the tape seems to splinter a little and the microphones fail to catch certain conversations with clarity. But somehow it all adds to the raw excitement and doesn't detract from the subject matter. The DVD also includes 69 minutes of audio highlights from the final recording.--Warwick Thompson

Revealing the events behind Kurt Cobain's death as seen through the eyes of Tom Grant the private investigator hired by Courtney Love in 1994 to track down her missing husband (Kurt Cobain) only days before his deceased body was found at their Seattle home. Cobain's death was ruled as suicide by the police (a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound). However doubts have circulated for over two decades as to the legitimacy of this ruling especially due to the work of Mr. Grant a former L.A. County Sheriff's detective who did his own investigation and determined there was significant empirical and circumstantial evidence to conclude that foul play could very well have occurred. The film develops as a narrative mystery with cinematic re-creations interviews with key experts and witnesses and the examination of official artefacts from the 1994 case.
