  • Arthur Christmas [DVD] [2011] Arthur Christmas | DVD | (19/11/2012) from £3.98  |  Saving you £15.80 (79.00%)  |  RRP £19.99

Aardman Animation manages to strike the perfect balance between comedy, creativity, and holiday spirit in this Christmas film that isn't about an aardvark, but Santa, his dysfunctional family, and a Christmas in jeopardy. Arthur Christmas takes on the age-old question of how Santa can possibly deliver gifts to every child in the world in one evening. The answer: with a lot of high-tech logistics and gadgetry and absolute military precision coordinated by Santa's son Steve. While Santa's other bumbling son Arthur deals with the stacks of letters from children, Steve and his tech-savvy crew coordinate virtually everything else to ensure the successful mission of delivering presents around the globe on Christmas Eve. Meanwhile, soon-to-be-retiring Santa simply does as he's told, and centenarian Grand-Santa watches the whole procedure on TV from the comfort of his easy chair. But when one little girl's present doesn't get delivered on Christmas Eve, it raises the question of just what is an acceptable margin of error when you're talking about children and Santa Claus--something that Steve, Arthur, Santa, and Grand-Santa don't quite agree on. Thus begins a very unusual, highly comical last-ditch effort by Arthur, Grand-Santa, and a wrapping elf named Bryony to deliver the forgotten present. The film is rife with funny scenes and characters, features some amazing CGI imagery that looks great on the big screen, and utilises a host of talented voice artists, including James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Bill Nighy, Jim Broadbent, Joan Cusack, and Eva Longoria. But most impressive is that along with all the humour and technological wizardry we get the perfect dose of holiday sentiment and the message that every child matters, especially on Christmas. • Mulan - Musical Masterpiece Edition [DVD] [1998] Mulan - Musical Masterpiece Edition | DVD | (22/03/2010) from £8.45  |  Saving you £9.54 (53.00%)  |  RRP £17.99

1998's Mulan is solid entertainment from a new group of Disney animators. The story source is a Chinese fab le about a young girl who disguises herself as a man to help her family and her country. When the Huns attack China, a cal l to arms goes out to every village, and Mulan's father, being the only man in the family, accepts the call. Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen, sung by Lea Salonga) has just made a disastrous appearance at the Matchmaker and decides to challenge soc iety's expectations (that she should be a bride). She steals her father's conscription notice, cuts her hair and impersona tes a man to join the army. She goes to boot camp, learning to fit in with the other soldiers with some help from her side kick, Mushu, a wise-cracking dragon (voiced by Eddie Murphy). She trains, and soon faces the Huns eye to eye to protect he r Emperor. The film is gorgeous to look at, with a superior blend of classic and computer-generated animation. Directors Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook make the best of it: a battle in the snowy mountains is as thrilling as the best Hollywood a ction films. The menacing Huns are not cute but simple and bad. The wickedness is subtle, not disturbing. The film is not a fully fledged musical, as it has only five songs (the best, "Be a Man", is sung during boot camp). Eddie Murphy is an in spired choice for the comic-relief dragon, but his lines are not as clever as Robin Williams's in Aladdin (1992). T hese are minor quibbles, though. The story is strong, and Mulan goes right to the top of Disney animated heroines; she has the right stuff. --Doug Thomas

The story picks up one month after Mulan has saved her country through bravery and determination. Revered by all, she now returns to her village and becomes engaged to General Li Shang. Wedding plans must wait, however, when the Emperor assigns the couple to a secret mission to escort his three princess daughters across China where their arranged marriages to waiting princes will secure an alliance with a rival kingdom and save China from invasion. Meanwhile, Mulan's wise-cracking guardian dragon, Mushu (voiced by Mark Moseley), realizes that if Mulan's marriage takes place, he is out of a job and so he undertakes his "18-phase master plan" of relationship sabotage to breakup the happy couple. Most of the film's jokes come from Moseley's Mushu (as quick-witted as Eddie Murphy's earlier performance), while a trio of prankish soldiers provide additional comic relief. While the film's overall effort is not as sensational as the original, it offers solid family entertainment, healthy female role models, and a handful of catchy songs. --Lynn Gibson
