Argo (DVD + UV Copy) DVD

Argo, which won the 2013 Best Picture and Best Director BAFTA awards, was directed by Ben Affleck and stars Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Alan Arkin and Donovan Tate.

This tense, riveting thriller is based on true events from 1980 concerning a covert operation involving a combined CIA and Canadian effort to rescue six American diplomats from Iran during the height of the Iranian revolution. The incident has now been declassified and the unbelievable truth is finally in the public domain. The six managed to escape in the confusion that ensued during the aftermath of an invasion of the US embassy in Tehran by militants; an event dubbed the Iranian hostage crisis which resulted in 52 Americans in total being taken hostage.

The six found refuge in the official residence of the Canadian Ambassador, Ken Taylor, but time was very quickly running out and if found they would surely be killed. Only an incredibly far-fetched plan, one reminiscent of a Hollywood blockbuster, would stand any chance of being successful. Will it be good enough to save them though?

Brilliant acting in a nail-bitingly suspenseful film; an exceptionally worthy award winner.

Ben Affleck directs and stars in this Academy Award-winning political thriller based on real events that took place during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. In November 1979, the American embassy in Tehran is stormed by militants and 52 Americans are taken hostage. In the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to escape and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing that it is only a matter of time before they are found out and probably killed, CIA 'exfiltration' specialist Tony Mendez (Affleck) implements a life-or-death undercover operation to smuggle them safely out of the country. The film won three Oscars including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay and also received the Golden Globe Awards and BAFTAs for Best Film and Best Director.
