Complete first series of the BBC comedy from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, following the humiliations of professional film extra Andy Millman (Gervais) and his eccentric friend Maggie (Ashley Jensen) as they try - and fail - to gain significant lines or parts in various productions. A host of famous actors send themselves up in cameo roles. In 'Ben Stiller', the Hollywood comedian is directing a film about the Bosnia conflict, and Andy tries to win a role by making friends with the refugee who wrote the script. In 'Ross Kemp', the TV hardman tries to convince Andy that his image is real, before being humiliated by the much harder Vinnie Jones. In 'Kate Winslet', the actress hopes her role in a Nazi war drama will win her an Oscar, and Andy tries a little too hard to get close to her. In 'Les Dennis', Andy gets a break playing in a panto alongside the washed-up TV star. In 'Samuel L. Jackson', Maggie gets into difficulties trying to prove she isn't racist, while Andy manages to get a line on a film the Hollywood superstar is making. Finally, in 'Patrick Stewart', Andy manages to enlist the Shakespearean actor's help in getting a script he's written to the BBC, but makes a fool of himself when he realises the script editor he's meeting with is gay.

Please note this is a region 2 DVD and will require a region 2 or region free DVD player in order to play Andy Millman is an actor but his agent cannot get him an acting job Instead he is just an extra in films a different film a different location ever hopeful that one day he will actually get some lines

WANT SOME MORE OF THE OFFICE? THEN LOOK ELSEWHERE, ALTHOUGH THE GHOST OF BRENT OCCASIONALLY RAISES HIS HEAD, THIS IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT BEAST AND ALL THE BETTER FOR IT.
BASED AROUND THE CENTRAL CHARACTERS OF ANDY & MAGGIE, THIS IS AN OFTEN GENTLE AND MORE OFTEN HILARIOUS SERIES WHICH, DESPITE IT'S SETTING, DEALS WITH RELATIONSHIPS AND THE NEED FOR ACCEPTANCE.
GERVAIS IS EXCELLENT THROUGHOUT BUT ALL THE PLAUDITS MUST GO TO ASHLEY JENSEN WHO'S PORTRAYAL OF HOPELESS ROMANTIC MAGGIE WILL HAVE YOU IN STITCHES!!
I MISSED THE SERIES WHEN IT WAS ON TV - I'D SEEN A BAD TRAILER FOR IT AND GAVE IT A WIDE BIRTH. I TOOK THE PLUNGE WITH THE DVD HOWEVER AND WAS VERY IMPRESSED AS THE CHARACATURES OF THE OFFICE HAVE DISAPPEARED AND A MORE POIGNANT AND INSIGHTFUL COMEDY HAS TAKEN OVER.
FULL PRAISE GOES TO ALL THE STARS WHO TURNED UP TO RIDICULE THEMSELVES WITH ESPECIAL PRAISE FOR BEN STILLER, KATE WINSLET AND LES DENNIS.
AND IF YOU HAVENT SEEN THE GERVAIS IMPRESSION OF A GENIE YET, BUY THIS DVD JUST FOR THAT - HAS ME IN STITCHES EVERYTIME!!!

Andy Millman is in something of a rut, careerwise. Ricky Gervais plays the struggling actor, forced to take insignificant, bit-part roles, albeit opposite some big stars. His cause is unaided by his incompetent agent (played brilliantly by Stephen Merchant, who also co-wrote the series) who seems hell-bent on flushing Andy's career down the toilet. Andy's partner is crime is the hapless Maggy (Ashley Jensen), another actor who often hilariously forgets to engage her brain before speaking.
The relationship between Andy and Maggy has a number of poignant moments as well, inevitably prompting the 'will they, won't they?' question.
Overall, a truly superb comedy series, with some star-studded cameos from Ben Stiller, Kate Winslet and Samuel L Jackson to name a few. Perhaps the most memorable episode is Les Dennis's, who certainly proves that he can laugh at himself.
It's a gimme that those who loved 'The Office' will enjoy this too. The comedy is very much in the same dry and witty vein, with many laugh-out-loud moments. Masterpiece number two under the belt for Gervais and Merchant! Personally, I can't wait for the second series.
