Resident Evil: The Complete Collection DVD|
Given that Resident Evil is a Paul Anderson movie based on a computer game which was itself highly derivative (especially of George A Romero and James Cameron films), it's probably unfair to complain that it hasn't got an original idea or moment in its entire running time. In the early 1980s, Italian schlock films such as Zombie Flesh Eaters and Zombie Creeping Flesh tried to cram in as many moments restaged from American originals as possible, strung together by silly characters wandering between monster attacks. This is a much-improved, edited, photographed and directed version of the same gambit. As amnesiac Milla Jovovich remembers amazing kung fu skills and anti-globalist Eric Mabius mutters about evil corporations, a gang of clichéd soldiers with nary a distinguishing feature between them (except for Michelle Rodriguez as a secondary tough chick) are trapped in an underground scientific compound at the mercy of a tyrannical computer--which manifests as a smug little-girl-o-gram--fending off flesh-eating zombies (though gore fans will be disappointed by the film's need to stay within the limits of the 15 certificate) and CGI mutants, not to mention the ever-popular zombie dogs. It's tolerably action-packed, but zips past its borrowings (Aliens, Cube, Deep Blue Sea) without adding anything that future schlock pictures will want to imitate. On the DVD: Resident Evil on disc has the expected trailers, both teaser and theatrical; a half-hour making-of; zombie make-up tests; featurettes on music (with Marilyn Manson), production design and costume. A lively commentary track features Anderson, Jovovich, Rodriguez and producer/zombie Jeremy Bolt--Jovovich upbraids Anderson for talking about different gradings of film stock over her nude scene and everyone else talks about how much she hurt them by punching them out during action sequences. Anderson mentions an alternate commentary track with visual effects designer Richard Yuricich, but it isn't included. --Kim Newmanfrom£19.99 | RRP:

Complete collection of action films based on the popular computer game. In 'Resident Evil' (2002) a virus has been sealed in an underground research centre known as the Hive, and Alice (Milla Jovovich) and Rain (Michelle Rodriguez) are sent in with a team of commandos to destroy it. However, they have failed to anticipate that all the employees who were trapped in the Hive with the virus, and thought to be dead, have been turned into the living dead and one scratch from them can cause the recipient to become like them... In 'Resident Evil: Apocalypse' (2004) Alice finds herself stuck in the contaminated Raccoon City after the re-opening of the deadly Hive. The infamous Umbrella Corporation has banned anyone from leaving in case of possible infection with the outside world. Along with other survivors Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory) and Carlos Oliviera (Oded Fehr), Alice must fight for her survival, and do all she can to escape the nightmare necropolis. Together, the small band of survivors seeks out eminent scientist Dr Charles Ashford (Jared Harris), the only man with the knowledge to help them out of their awful entrapment - but they soon discover that Ashford's co-operation comes at a heavy price. In the third film, 'Resident Evil: Extinction' (2007), Alice is alone, years after the Raccoon City disaster, and aware that she has become a liability and likely to endanger those around her. She is struggling to survive and bring down the Umbrella Corporation led by the sinister Albert Wesker (Jason O'Mara) and head researcher Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen). Meanwhile, travelling through the Nevada Desert and the ruins of Las Vegas, Carlos Oliviera, L.J. (Mike Epps), and new survivors K-Mart (Spencer Locke), Claire Redfield (Ali Larter), and Betty (Ashanti) are fighting to survive against hordes of zombies, killer crows and other terrible creatures spawned by the deadly T-virus that has killed millions. In 'Resident Evil: Afterlife' (2010) Alice continues her fight against the Umbrella Corporation. Following new information, she heads to Los Angeles where she seeks out any survivors of the T-virus epidemic. The group of survivors, including Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield, attempt to strengthen their numbers and find refuge, but can they escape the zombie-infested city before it's too late? In 'Resident Evil: Retribution' (2012) Alice finds herself at the very heart of Umbrella's operation facility, having been captured by the organisation. Aware that Umbrella hold the secret to her past, Alice sets out to explore the facility in search of the truth and those responsible for the initial virus outbreak. Along the way she teams up with other survivors of the disaster as the battle against Umbrella and the zombies rages on. Finally, in 'Resident Evil: The Final Chapter' (2016), humanity is on the brink of extinction as Alice returns to Raccoon City to try to stop Umbrella from launching one final attack on the remaining survivors. If she is to stand a chance at stopping the attack, Alice must join forces with anyone willing to help and be prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for the good of the human race.
