After receiving a big promotion, career politician Janet (Scott Thomas) holds a party at her London townhouse to celebrate. Along with her academic husband Bill (Timothy Spall), guests include flashy banker Tom (Murphy), Janet's old friend Jenny (Clarkson) and Bill's old university acquaintances Martha (Cherry Jones) and Jinny (Emily Mortimer). Although the celebrations begin in a civilised manner, things soon get out of hand as dark secrets are revealed, dramatic confessions are made and tempers begin to flare.
