Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon) is a recently widowed man with a young family; 14 year old Dylan (Colin Ford) and 7 year old Rosie (Maggie Elizabeth Jones).

After the death of his wife he impulsively decides to give his family a fresh start; buying a house and estate miles out of the city which also includes a run down, dilapidated zoo complete with 200 animals. His resolve to try and restore the zoo (a condition of the purchase) delights his daughter but dismays his troubled teenage son. The three set about rebuilding and renovating the ramshackle zoo along with the help of dedicated head keeper, Kelly (Scarlett Johansson) but, predictably, things do not go quite as smoothly as expected.

The family have to work exceptionally hard to overcome their grief and sorrow at the loss of their wife/mother. Then they have to face up to their incredibly challenging, completely different lifestyle and the myriad of difficulties and disappointments they encounter as they try to make their new venture work. We Bought a Zoo is a comedy-drama from 2011 and is based on the 2008 memoir by British journalist Benjamin Mee. It was directed by Cameron Crowe.
