The History of Iron Maiden Part 1 - The Early Days | DVD | (01/11/2004)
from £11.86 | Saving you £2.80 (15.60%) | RRP
Perhaps one of the reasons that Iron Maiden have had such a long and successful career (25 years and counting) is because they know how to take care of their fans. The Early Days--the first in a series of planned DVD archives of the band's history--is ample proof of this. This two-disc set is packed with Maiden goodies, charting their early rise at the forefront of the movement that became known as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Disc One has not one but three live concerts: "Live at the Rainbow", originally released on VHS back in 1980 and featuring their original vocalist Paul Di'Anno; 1982's "Beast Over Hammersmith", with Bruce Dickinson fronting the band; and 1983's "Live at Dortmund", which features the band at the top of the bill and the top of their form, headlining a massive metal festival in Germany. All feature such classic Iron Maiden tracks as "Killers", "Number of the Beast" and "Run to the Hills". Disc Two complements these live sets with a mix of archival material (including home video footage of one of their first gigs, back in 1979 at East London's Ruskin Arms) and exclusive new material. The centrepiece is a 90-minute documentary where band members past and present give candid and entertaining interviews, charting the birth and subsequent rise of these metal titans. Non-fans will probably find much of the material here a bit silly (the spandex and leather look hasn't aged well), but this DVD isn't for them anyway. But people who love Iron Maiden will find evidence here that the band loves them, too. --Robert Burrow

Michael Jackson's This Is It (2 Disc Collector's Edition) | DVD | (22/02/2010)
from £2.98 | Saving you £19.99 (87.00%) | RRP
It's hard not to watch This Is It without feeling a mixture of sorrow and elation. When he passed away in the summer of 2009, Michael Jackson was in the midst of rehearsals for his final tour, an ambitious 50-date engagement. In editing 120 hours of rehearsal footage together, Jackson producer Kenny Ortega proves that it would've been an event for the ages. Michael performs material that spans his career, from a Motown medley to multi-platinum hits from Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. Though he hadn't toured in 10 years, it becomes instantly apparent, despite rumours to the contrary, that Jackson was still in full possession of that unmistakable voice--high-pitched whoops and all--and that he still had the gravity-defying moves of a man half his age. Jackson and Ortega also collaborated on some real showstoppers, such as a graveyard-set "Thriller"; an imposing "They Don't Care About Us," in which several dancers appear to morph into thousands; and a film noir sequence in which the singer slides in and out of Gilda and other black-and-white classics, singing "Smooth Criminal" all the while. Not everything works, like the Jackson 5 numbers, in which he flubs a few lyrics, claiming that his earpiece isn't working properly, but as he readily acknowledges, "That's what rehearsal is for." It's a tragedy that he didn't get the chance to share this dazzling show with the world, but Ortega allows fans to feel as if it actually happened--at least onscreen. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
U2 - Rattle and Hum | DVD | (06/08/2001)
from £4.74 | Saving you £11.25 (70.40%) | RRP
Rattle and Hum is not a film for anyone looking for an introduction to Irish band U2's career in the 1980s, but it is a vibrant portrait of an established group making its musical pilgrimage through the America it has always imagined, from blues and gospel to early rock 'n' roll. Filmmaker Phil Joanou (Heaven's Prisoners), a veteran music-video director and maker of the distractingly kinetic Three O'Clock High, finds a suitable outlet for his high energy in this juggernaut of a journey, which finds U2 collaborating with a black gospel choir and BB King, recording inside the legendary Sun Records studio, dropping by Graceland, and in a moment of fearlessness, performing the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" to exorcise Charles Manson's sick claim on the song. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

ABBA - The Definitive Collection | DVD | (29/07/2002)
from £N/A | Saving you £N/A (N/A%) | RRP
ABBA were one of the first pop groups to exploit the promotional video as a vehicle for publicising their music across the globe. ABBA--The Definitive Collection provides an audio-visual timeline of how their promos developed over a 10-year period from the mid-1970s to the early 80s. The first ABBA videos were simple recordings of the band miming to their songs in a studio ("Waterloo" and "Ring Ring"); then, for "Mamma Mia" and "SOS", the style was replaced by something more adventurous, focusing on the four grouped together in rival pairs. As technology and the group evolved so did their promo films, with more recent examples shot on videotape and incorporating post-production special effects and outdoor locations ("One Of Us" and "Head over Heels"). Director Lasse Hallstrom has since made the transition from these relatively low-budget vehicles to Hollywood success with Chocolat and The Shipping News. If ABBA’s early efforts look a little primitive compared to big-budget modern music promos, the songs themselves now sound even better than ever, having been digitally re-mastered in 24-bit format. As well as featuring the digitally re-mastered promos for the majority of their single releases, exclusive previously unreleased material is also incorporated here, such as the extended original mix of "On and On and On". On the DVD: ABBA--The Definitive Collection on DVD squeezes in all 30 videos, plus five bonus tracks which include the promos for the Spanish-language versions of "I Have a Dream", "Happy New Year" and "When All is Said and Done". The video for the never released "When I Kissed the Teacher" is also included, too, as is a camp recording of "Dancing Queen" filmed at a gala tribute for Sweden’s King and Queen. The 20-minute picture gallery is an excellent and comprehensive photographic record of the group through the years. Background information about all of the material, is discussed in the accompanying biographical booklet.--John Galilee
