  • Phil Collins - Live And Loose In Paris [1997] Phil Collins - Live And Loose In Paris | DVD | (01/05/2000) from £7.99  |  Saving you £10.00 (55.60%)  |  RRP £17.99

If Phil Collins isn't the hardest-working man in show business, he's right up there, at least if the nearly 90-minute concert Live and Loose in Paris is any indication. The man is non-stop motion, whether seated behind his drum kit, prowling the stage as frontman (the format is in-the-round, so it takes an effort to keep all of the arena-sized audience involved), or, of course, singing the hits (including "Against All Odds", "In the Air Tonight" and "Sussudio"). The "loose" part of the title is a bit of a misnomer; Collins' excellent band is unerringly tight, and the performance is well-choreographed while still maintaining some sense of spontaneity. There's no denying the appeal of Collins' drum-heavy, horn-driven, R&B-cum-world-music sound, and if his music ultimately isn't as challenging or engaging as that of Peter Gabriel's (the other ex-Genesis lead singer), no one in this Paris audience seems to mind a bit. Good show, Phil. --Sam Graham

  • Eminem - All Access Europe [2002] Eminem - All Access Europe | DVD | (17/06/2002) from £9.94  |  Saving you £0.05 (0.50%)  |  RRP £9.99

All Access Europe is a behind-the-scenes look at rap sensation Eminem as he travels through Europe on his 2001 tour. Joined by his crew D12, the controversial MC lets the cameras roll as he and his entourage traipse through such places as Hamburg, Oslo, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Manchester and London. Much of the action is shot on hand-held camera which captures the posse hanging out backstage, getting drunk/stoned, rehearsing in empty stadiums and performing in front of immense and adoring crowds. We also get to see Em drop his pants--twice. While this is entertaining at times, it's hardly insightful. Sporadic interviews reveal aspects of Slim that we already knew: that the interview/media process bores him; that Dido helped his career out as much as he helped hers with "Stan". The best aspect of this slightly lacklustre release is the constant soundtrack that the live footage offers: Em and D12 perform all the classics here like "The Way I Am" (with Marilyn Manson), "Stan" (with Dido), "I'm Back", "Devil's Night", "The Real Slim Shady" and hordes of others, showing himself a capable performer and a truly inspirational rapper. On the DVD: Eminem's devilish symbols of subversion are all over this DVD, from the chainsaw-map on the inside jacket to the suspicious looking capsules that indicate the menu options. Special features are live performances of "Purple Pills" and "Forget About Dre" (featuring the good Doctor himself), a gallery of still photos and, desperately enough, a "cast and crew" section which is basically a rolling list of credits. The sound quality isn't bad with Dolby Stereo 2.0 and the video aspect ratio is 4:3 but it's hard not to feel that the one-hour-38-minute running time would benefit from being reduced by half an hour. --Paul Sullivan

In 1996, composer, producer, and guitar legend Ry Cooder entered Egrem Studios in Havana with the forgotten greats of Cuban music, many of them in their 60s and 70s, some of them long since retired. The resulting album, Buena Vista Social Club, became a Grammy-winning international bestseller. When Cooder returned to Havana in 1998 to record a solo album by 72-year-old vocalist Ibrahim Ferrer, filmmaker Wim Wenders was on hand to document the occasion. Wenders splits the film between portraits of the performers, who tell their stories directly to the camera as they wander the streets and neighbourhoods of Havana, and a celebration of the music heard in performance scenes in the studio, in their first concert in Amsterdam, and in their second and final concert at Carnegie Hall. The songs are too often cut short in this fashion, but Buena Vista Social Club is not a concert film. Wenders weaves the artist biographies with a glimpse of modern Cuba remembering its past, capturing a lost culture in music that is suddenly, unexpectedly revived for audiences in Havana and around the world. Wenders makes his presence practically invisible, as if his directorial flourishes or off-screen narration might deflect attention from the artists, who do a fine job of telling their own stories through interviews and music. It's a loving portrait of a master class in Cuban music, with a vital cast of ageing performers whose energy and passion belie their years. --Sean Axmaker
