  • Vampir Cuadecuc [DVD] Vampir Cuadecuc | DVD | (09/10/2017) from £10.39  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

Made in Spain while General Franco was still in power and shown clandestinely, Pere Portabella's extraordinary Vampir Cuadecuc ostensibly follows the filming of Jess Franco's shocker El conde Dracula (Count Dracula, 1970) starring Christopher Lee, Herbert Lom and the exquisite Soledad Miranda. This experimental 'making of' documentary and investigation into the myth of the vampire, becomes a powerful political metaphor for bloodthirsty fascism epitomised by Franco and tyrants like him, a witty allegory with Dracula as the dictator whose demise is certain. Dispensing almost entirely with dialogue, Portabella utilises an abstract, fabulously idiosyncratic soundscape created by renowned Catalan artist and musician Carles Santos. The effect is surreal and wondrous to behold. Our release is presented from a new HD transfer of the film and features a new and exclusive interview with director Pere Portabella, plus two short films and more. DVD SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS: Vampir Cuadecuc (1971) presented from a new HD restoration from original materials A new interview with director Pere Portabella A new filmed introduction by Will Fowler Pere Portabella s experimental short films La Tempesta (2003) and No Al No (2006). Booklet featuring a new essay on the film by journalist Stanley Schtinter Original soundtrack in 2.0 Dual Mono

  • Belle De Jour 50th Anniversary [Blu-ray] Belle De Jour 50th Anniversary | Blu Ray | (02/10/2017) from £14.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

Stunningly restored for the 50th anniversary, BELLE DE JOUR is an elegant and erotic masterpiece and undoubtedly Luis Buñuel's most accessible film. Screen icon Catherine Deneuve plays Séverine, the glacially beautiful, sexually unfulfilled wife of a surgeon, whose blood runs icy with ennui until she takes a day-job in a brothel. There she meets a charismatic but sinister young gangster (Pierre Clémenti), and ignites an obsession that will court peril. Buñuel uses diffused lighting, dark colours, and shadows throughout the film to temper the gravity and emotional impact of each uncomfortable scene. Left to our own imaginative devices, the result is a film that is highly unsettling, perverse, and inevitably tragic. SPECIAL FEATURES: The Last Script A Story of Perversion or Emancipation? Interview with Dr Sylvain Mimoun Commentary by Professor Peter W. Evans NEW Interview with Jean-Claude Carrière NEW Masterclass with Diego Bunuel and Jean-Claude Carrière NEW Trailer INCLUDES 6 ARTCARDS

  • Freehold [DVD] Freehold | DVD | (09/10/2017) from £8.49  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

An oily, amoral estate agent is preyed upon by one of his victims, who quietly moves into his flat and, unseen, begins a deliciously malicious campaign of revenge. Two Pigeons is a dark comedy with a sinister streak.

  • L.A. Confidential [Blu-ray] L.A. Confidential | Blu Ray | (02/10/2017) from £8.55  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

In a time when it seems that every other movie makes some claim to being a film noir, LA Confidential is the real thing--a gritty, sordid tale of sex, scandal, betrayal and corruption of all sorts (police, political, press--and, of course, very personal) in 1940s Hollywood. The Oscar-winning screenplay is actually based on several titles in James Ellroy's series of chronological thriller novels (including the title volume, The Big Nowhere and White Jazz)--a compelling blend of LA history and pulp fiction that has earned it comparisons to the greatest of all Technicolour noir films, Chinatown. Kim Basinger richly deserved her Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of a conflicted femme fatale; unfortunately, her male costars are so uniformly fine that they may have canceled each other out with the Academy voters: Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kevin Spacey and James Cromwell play LAPD officers of varying stripes. Pearce's character is a particularly intriguing study in Hollywood amorality and ambition, a strait-laced "hero" (and son of a departmental legend) whose career goals outweigh all other moral, ethical and legal considerations. If he's a good guy, it's only because he sees it as the quickest route to a promotion. --Jim Emerson

Celebrated filmmaker Amat Escalante follows up his critically lauded features Heli and Los Bastardos with the award-winning The Untamed, which critics have called ferociously intelligent (Jonathan Romney, Screen) and brilliant, frightening (Rory O'Connor, The Film Stage). Alejandra is a housewife, raising two boys with husband Angel in a small city. Her brother Fabian works as a nurse in a local hospital. Their provincial lives are upset with the arrival of the mysterious Veronica. Something whose force they cannot resist and with whom they must make peace or suffer its wrath. Escalante's film mixes Lovecraftian science fiction with social commentary as he tackles themes including corruption and social injustice, with a dose of inspiration from Zulawski's Possession, producing a mix that has won acclaim including the Silver Lion at the prestigious Venice Film Festival and Best Director at Austin's Fantastic Fest. A TAIL OF PERSONAL GROWTH Writer-director Ivan I. Tverdovsky s prize-winning sophomore feature (Special Prize of the Jury at Karlovy Vary Film Festival, Best Picture at Fantastic Fest) deftly mixes the deadpan humour of Aki Kaurismäki with a poignant examination of social issues including loneliness and aging. Natasha is a middle-aged admin employee at a zoo where her female co-workers take pleasure in making fun of her. She lives with her God-fearing mother and leads a dull existence without prospects, until one day she grows a tail. Medical examinations follow where she meets Peter, a young radiologist and her dreary life is turned upside down. Described as Kafka meets Cronenberg (Hollywood Reporter) Tverdovsky s film is a beautifully photographed portrait of Eastern Europe that recalls the recent New Romanian Cinema and features a brave and brilliant central performance from Natalya Pavlenkova. • Murder On The Orient Express [DVD] Murder On The Orient Express | DVD | (23/10/2017) from £11.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

Just the name "Orient Express" conjures up images of a bygone era. Add an all-star cast (including Sean Connery, Ingrid Bergman, Jacqueline Bisset and Lauren Bacall, to name a few) and Agatha Christie's delicious plot and how can you go wrong? Particularly if you add in Albert Finney as Christie's delightfully pernickety sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Someone has knocked off nasty Richard Widmark on this train trip and, to Poirot's puzzlement, everyone seems to have a motive--just the set-up for a terrific whodunit. Though it seems like an ensemble film, director Sidney Lumet gives each of his stars their own solo and each makes the most of it. Bergman went so far as to win an Oscar for her role. But the real scene-stealer is the ever-reliable Finney as the eccentric detective who never misses a trick. --Marshall Fine
