Gary Oldman's Churchill tipped for 'his finest hour' at the Golden Globes

03 January 2018

As well as starring in the Hitmans Bodyguard as Vladislav Dukhovic, out on DVD this week, Gary Oldman is hotly tipped for his first Golden Globe as best actor for his performance in The Darkest Hour (2017) which is out on general release in the UK this week ( I already have my seat booked). Oldman's portrayal of Sir Winston Churchill is described as a 'deliciously crafty portrayal' by the Washington Post; ' Oldman is excellent in the movie, playing a jolly, idiosyncratic, sometimes conflicted version of the British prime minister' (Vox.com); 'British actor goes all in and delivers a fierce performance as the Prime Minister that saved Britain – and the world – from fascism' (Rolling Stone Magazine). The trailers indicate that Oldman, who despite many outstanding performances,  has enjoyed limited success in the personal accolades scene, has a very good chance of avoiding being overlooked at the Golden Globes and perhaps is on his way to Oscar and BAFTA nominations too.

Nil by Mouth, one of the best films to come out of the UK, was written and directed by Gary Oldman, and he won Best British Film and Best Independent Screenplay, as well as Kathy Burke achieving best actress at Cannes and along with Ray Winstone winning Best Actress/Actor in an Independent film at the 1998 Awards.

Oldman' first major roles were as Sid Vicious in the film Sid and Nancy (1986) and Lee Harvey Oswald in Oliver Stone's JFK (1991). He then became better known for roles in Bram Stokers Dracula (1992) as Count Dracula, Sirius Black in Harry Potter and The prisoner of Azkaban (2004) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 (2011).and George Smiley in Tinker, Taylor, Soldier Spy (2011). He also performed in the role of James Gorden, the police commissioner in the Batman films and the Dark Knight.

Oldman is the clear favourite at the Golden Globes this year for best actor…but who knows.
