02 June 2012

As usual the Find-DVD team have looked ahead a few weeks into June so we can let you know well in advance about some of the new titles that will be coming out. Here we will feature just a few of the ones that we definitely think a lot of people will have been waiting for but we will include references to many more.

If you still don't see something that interests you then please do feel free to browse the site using the various search options we have set up for you. You can see the DVDs that have only just come out using the new release link, the ones that are coming out in the future (in date order) using the release calendar link or the ones that are the most popular using the link provided for this. If you already have a good idea of the subject of DVD you are looking for you can click on the category links which will list each genre of DVD (eg action, documentary, horror & suspense, international etc) separately. Each category has the option to sort the results by most popular, by price or by release date. You can even refine your search by choosing media types (eg Blu-Ray, HD) or classification (U, PG, 12A etc) if you think this will help.

May saw the release of quite a few DVD titles that we know many of you had been patiently waiting for – some of which won coveted Oscars and other awards in the 2011-2012 awards season. These included War Horse, The Descendants, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and The Artist. If you have been looking forward to seeing these films and haven't got your copies yet – these are out NOW so order yours straight away. But onwards into June……..

Horrible Histories – Series 3 and Horrible Histories – Complete Series 1-3 Box Set are both due out on 4/6/2012 just in time for half term. This series, covering key events in British and World history, was originally broadcast on CBBC. Due to its highly imaginative programme format and unique attention-grabbing presentation of the subject matter it regularly attracted millions of viewers including many from far beyond the intended age range (6-12 years) of its target audience. Focusing on the gruesome grisly facts that children hideously love to savour and jam-packing every episode with all the action from significant historical eras including the Savage Stone Age, The Rotten Romans, The Vicious Vikings and the Woeful Second World War plus many more, the makers of this series have certainly developed a winning formula. With copious spatterings of blood, guts and poo added for good measure your children will be amused, inspired and thrilled as they learn. The series is based on Terry Deary's best-selling Horrible Histories books.

Goon (a film from 2011) is also out on 4/6/2012. Goon tells the story of Doug Glatt, a bouncer working at a local bar, who is labelled as an under-achiever and is an embarrassment to his family who are all intellectuals. A chance sequence of events leads to him capturing the attention of the coach of the Halifax Highlanders – a semi-pro ice hockey team. He decides Doug would be a great asset to the team (as protector) based purely on his ability to land a fully debilitating right hook. One problem though – Doug can't skate. Will that stop him though…? Goon is directed by Michael Dowse and stars Sean William Scott, Jay Baruchel and Alison Pill.

Francesco's Shakespeare will be released in early June (4/6/2012). This beautifully presented Italian journey (from North to South) is brought to us by well-known Venetian architect and historian Francesco DaMosto. It is the latest addition to the Francesco's series which also includes Francesco's Venice, Francesco's Mediterranean Voyage and Francesco's Italy - Top to Toe. This time we are treated to a privileged glimpse of some of the most exquisitely elaborate architecture and stunning Italian scenery that we are told inspired the great Shakespeare himself. DaMosto takes us from Venice, Verona, Rome and Florence to Napoli, Sicily and Capri, recounting as he goes, the facts surrounding Shakespeare's connection with each area. If you love Italy – this is a real gem.

Also out on 4/6/2012 are;

 A Monster in Paris – a 2011 animated comedy fairy-tale set in Paris in 1910. Franc, a monster (giant flea) is accidentally created in the laboratory of a madcap inventor. Trouble ensues as the Police Commissioner tries to gain popularity by attempting to capture the harmless creature.

 Coriolanus - a 2011 drama thriller set in Rome starring and directed by Ralph Fiennes

Scott & Bailey – Series 2 and Scott & Bailey Series 1 and 2 Box Set – following Detective Constables Janet Scott and Rachel Bailey at home and at work as they set about solving some of Manchester's most complex Major Incidents.

David Lynch Box Set – Six of his best known films, some short films, interviews, documentaries and out-takes. Films include Eraserhead, Dune, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway and, Twin Peaks.

J. Edgar is out on DVD on 11/6/2012. This film from 2011 charts Hoover's career – most importantly his role in setting up the FBI - masterminding and controlling it as director until his death in 1972. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as J. Edgar looking back on his life as he prepares for the writing of his biography. It depicts a powerful man, preoccupied with curtailing any potential threats before they could harm his country. He was very much admired and respected for all he stood for but at the same time he engendered fear and mistrust using unconventional methods at times to gain results. The film also explores his private life in which his mother (Judi Dench), Helen Gandy his private secretary (Naomi Watts) and Clyde Tolson his friend (Armie Hammer) were his closest confidantes.

Also out on 11/6/2012 isThe Muppets from 2011. Jim Henson's creation is back once again with a star studded cast and a hilarious comedy adventure that the whole family will enjoy. Muppet fans Gary, Mary and Walter discover that the Muppet Theater is about to be destroyed by an oil tycoon who wants to drill underneath it for oil. They search out and reunite Miss Piggy, Kermit, Fozzie Bear and all the other Muppets so they can try to save the theatre together. Starring Jason Seagal, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper and Matt Vogel and directed by James Bobin.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (11/6/2012) is one of the Oscar nominated films from last season. It tells the story of young Asperger's sufferer, Oskar, who has to try to come to terms with his father's horrific death which happened during the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on 9/11. He finds a key amongst his father's belongings and sets out to try to find out what it opens, adamant that this will give him all the answers he has been looking for. This film is based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer and stars Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock Thomas Horn and Max Von Sydow. It was directed by Stephen Daldry.

Some of the other DVDs out on 11/6/2012 include;

 One Tree Hill – Season 1-9 Complete – The complete series recounting the action-packed lives of some high school kids in a North Carolina town. Addictive viewing!

Man on a Ledge – 2012 crime thriller in which a police psychologist has to try and talk an ex-con down from a hotel rooftop. This turns out to be merely a diversion and the real action is elsewhere!

Also due out on 11/6/2012 are some of the Season Reviews 2011/2012 for various top football clubs (Manchester City, Chelsea, Sheffield Wednesday)

Later on in June we will see the release onto DVD of Safe House (15/6/2012) starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, The Woman in Black (18/6/2012) which is based on the traditional ghost story and stars Daniel Radcliffe as lawyer Arthur Kipps, Wallander – Series 3 and Wallander - Series 1-3 Box Set (18/8/2012)  – the Kenneth Branagh version based on Henning Mankell's popular best sellers. We will also be looking forward to Braquo – Season 2 and Braquo Season 1 & 2 (18/6/2012); a murky, violent, accurate police thriller series which takes place in Paris. We will have to wait till towards the end of June though for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – a 2011 comedy drama which has already made it onto Find-DVDs best sellers list (though it isn't actually out until 25/6/2012). Starring Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and the wonderful Dame Maggie Smith it tells the story of a group of retired people who travel to India to live in what they have been told is a luxurious newly restored hotel. Nothing is further from the truth. A masterpiece!
