  • Bad Santa [2003] Bad Santa | DVD | (14/11/2005) from £2.75  |  Saving you £17.24 (86.20%)  |  RRP £19.99

Instantly qualifying as a perennial cult favorite, Bad Santa is as nasty as it wants to be, and there's something to be said for comedy without compromise. The Coen brothers conceived the basic idea and served as executive producers, but it's director Terry Zwigoff who brings his unique affinity for losers and outcasts to the twisted tale of Willie T. Stokes (Billy Bob Thornton), a hard-drinking, chain-smoking, foul-mouthed sexaholic safe-cracker who targets a different department store every holiday season, playing Santa while he cases the joint with his dwarf elf-partner Marcus (Tony Cox). With comedic support from Bernie Mac, Lauren Graham, Cloris Leachman, and John Ritter in his final film, Thornton milks the lowbrow laughs with a slovenly lack of sentiment, warming Bad Santa's pickled heart just enough to please a chubby misfit (Brett Kelly, hilariously deadpan) who may or may not be mentally challenged. As dry as an arid martini and blacker than morning-after coffee, Bad Santa is an instant cure for yuletide schmaltz, and if you think this appropriately R-rated comedy is suitable for kids, your parenting skills are no better than Willie's. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

  • Pushing Tin [1999] Pushing Tin | DVD | (30/06/2003) from £3.95  |  Saving you £0.60 (10.00%)  |  RRP £5.99

Blessed with a fantastic cast and slick direction by Mike Newell, Pushing Tin is one of those invigorating movies (like Wall Street or All the President's Men) that takes you behind the scenes of a dramatic profession--in this case, the high-stress world of air-traffic controllers--and throws in a source of conflict to ramp up the tension. For ace "tin-pusher" Nick Falzone (John Cusack), that conflict arrives in the form of Russell Bell (Billy Bob Thornton), whose Zen-like control of air traffic immediately puts Nick on the defensive. Add an incident of infidelity and Nick's subsequent self-loathing and guilt and Pushing Tin turns into a macho contest, with Nick's and Russell's spouses (Cate Blanchett and Angelina Jolie, respectively) stuck in the middle. At that point, this otherwise splendid comedy-drama turns almost fatally silly and hits additional turbulence by lapsing into a predictable series of pat resolutions. Fortunately, the jazzy cast avoids a nosedive into the tarmac, and if you recall Blanchett's Oscar-nominated performance in Elizabeth, you'll be amazed by her flawless transformation into a smart and sweetly devoted New Jersey housewife. Dialogue is a major asset here, and the script (by TV veterans Glen and Les Charles) gives Cusack & co. plenty to chew on. That makes Pushing Tin a breezy good time, and its flaws are easily forgiven. --Jeff Shannon

  • Bad Santa [Blu-ray] [2003] Bad Santa | Blu Ray | (01/12/2008) from £7.79  |  Saving you £12.20 (61.00%)  |  RRP £19.99

Titles Comprise: The traditional Christmas tale will never be the same with the cleverly twisted merrily irreverent story of a Santa so bad he's wickedly funny. Terry Zwigoff's Bad Santa stars Billy Bob Thornton as one of the most crooked corrupted and downright hysterical Kris Kringles ever to grace the screen. Inspired by a mix of movie classics including the outrageous one-liners and outcasts of The Bad News Bears and the riotous impertinence of South Park with a dash of the holiday spirit of A Christmas Carol albeit one that would make Dickens wince! Billy Bob Thornton is Willie T. Stokes a washed-up wise-cracking Department Store Santa who can't help but be more naughty than nice. Underneath his ill-fitting red suit Willie is actually a safecracker who makes one big score every year - on Christmas Eve. As shoppers head home from the mall this Santa and his ingenious Elf - Willie's midget partner-incrime Marcus (Tony Cox) - crack the store safe and make off with their own holiday stash. But then comes Phoenix. Here Santa and his Elf find their annual heist endangered by a pesky store manager (the late John Ritter) a savvy mall detective (Bernie Mac) a sexy Santa fan (Lauren Graham) and an innocent but beleaguered 8 year-old misfit (Brett Kelly) who decides to believe that Willie - as intoxicated acid-tongued and felonious as he seems to be -- is the real Santa he's been seeking. On the heels of two films that brought him a hip cult following and critical acclaim - Crumb and Ghost World - director Terry Zwigoff emerges with his most accessible comedy to date all the while pulling no punches on a wild ride through Christmas' outlandish funnier side. Laughing riotously all the way the film skewers such classic holiday traditions as rampant commercialism smart-mouthed mall rugrats and Santa's saintly image.

  • Monster's Ball [2002] Monster's Ball | DVD | (24/02/2003) from £2.74  |  Saving you £17.24 (86.20%)  |  RRP £19.99

A harrowing portrayal of Deep South life in the 21st century, Monster's Ball hits you where it hurts most, in the complex realm of extreme human emotions. This is not a movie to pass the time on a Sunday afternoon. With intriguing juxtapositions and some of the best editing of recent times it has all the makings of a modern film noir, yet it's not only the men that end up on the wrong side of the track: pride and ill-fortune are the real femme fatales here. Billy Bob Thornton is a death row officer whose redneck father has taught him that emotions make you weak, leading to an inability to love his son (Heath Ledger) and feel any compassion for the convicts in his care. When he loses a "loved one", he embarks on a relationship with the widow (Halle Berry) of a man whom he strapped in the electric chair, and the two of them search for comfort in sex, alcohol and chocolate ice-cream. The movie features fine turns from all actors involved, with Berry deservedly winning an Oscar for best actress and Ledger proving he is more than eye candy. Far from concluding the suffering, the ending leaves the viewer in an emotional void in which you will find yourself analysing your own shortcomings, prejudices and emotional ties. --Nikki Disney
