  • Reach For The Sky [1956] Reach For The Sky | DVD | (19/06/2007) from £4.49  |  Saving you £5.50 (55.10%)  |  RRP £9.99

Reach for the Sky was a box-office hit in 1956 and rightly remains a fondly regarded classic of British cinema. Kenneth More is ideally cast as Douglas Bader, the gifted pilot who loses both legs in a pre-war air crash, only to play a major role in the Battle of Britain, rise to the rank of Group Captain and become a war hero. Based on Paul Brickhill's biography, this is an "official" history maybe, but Lewis Gilbert's screenplay and direction are historically accurate and informed by that very British humour, of which More was a natural. The film is graced by a decent supporting cast and a typically "widescreen" score from John Addison. On the DVD: Reach for the Sky is vividly reproduced in 16:9 anamorphic format and decent mono. There are subtitles for the hard of hearing and detailed biographies of More, Gilbert and Barder. The original theatrical trailer is included, but it would also have made sense to include an interview or documentary footage of Bader himself. --Richard Whitehouse

  • Thelma & Louise--Special Edition [1991] Thelma & Louise--Special Edition | DVD | (06/05/2002) from £4.19  |  Saving you £7.80 (65.10%)  |  RRP £11.99

Thelma and Louise is as extraordinary and admirable a film in retrospect as it was when it was first shown. Nothing has dated about its tale of two waitresses who decide that being outlaws and eventual death on their own terms is better than putting up with any more nonsense from husbands, boyfriends, rapists and offensive strangers. Ridley Scott's direction is almost impeccable; Callie Khourie's script is intelligent, without being patronising, about the lives of blue-collar women; and the central performances from Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon are finely judged in the way they show hidden capacities in two ordinary people gradually opening up. The secondary performances are remarkable as well, most notably Harvey Keitel as the policeman with a heart who tries and fails to save them, and Brad Pitt as the beautiful boy whose casual thievishness dooms them even further. On the DVD: Thelma and Louise comes to DVD in its original widescreen ratio of 2.35:1 and with high quality Dolby 5.1 sound that brings out fine details of the Country score and the atmospheric noises of fast cars and lonely places. This special edition also comes with two commentaries, one in which Ridley Scott discusses his conception of the film in painstaking detail, and a delightful one in which Khourie, Davis and Sarandon charmingly bitch their way through the whole film. There is more of this in the excellent making-of documentary, "The Last Journey", which includes a subtly different alternate ending, as well as a comprehensive set of deleted scenes, notably a more tender alternate version of the Davis/Pitt love scene. --Roz Kaveney

  • The Incredible Hulk [2008] The Incredible Hulk | DVD | (13/10/2008) from £4.49  |  Saving you £15.50 (77.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

A more accessible and less heavy-handed movie than Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk, Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk is a purely popcorn love affair with Marvel's raging, green superhero, as well as the old television series starring Bill Bixby as Dr. David Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the beast within him. Edward Norton takes up where Eric Bana left off in Lee's version, playing Bruce (that's the character's original name) Banner, a haunted scientist always on the move. Trying to eliminate the effects of a military experiment that turns him into the Hulk whenever his emotions get the better of him, Banner is hiding out in Brazil at the film's beginning. Working in a bottling plant and communicating via email with an unidentified professor who thinks he can help, Banner goes postal when General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross and a small army turn up to grab him. Intent on developing whatever causes Banner's metamorphoses into a weapon, Ross brings along a quietly deranged soldier named Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth), who wants Ross to turn him into a supersoldier who can take on the Hulk. The adventure spreads to the U.S., where Banner hooks up with his old lover (and Ross' daughter), Betty (Liv Tyler), and where the Hulk takes on several armed assaults, including one in a pretty unusual location: a college campus. The film's action is impressive, though the computer-generated creature is disappointingly cartoonish, and a second monster turning up late in the movie looks even cheesier. Norton is largely wasted in the film--he's essentially a bridge between sequences where he disappears and the Hulk rampages around. As good an actor as he is, Norton doesn't have the charisma here to carry those scenes in which one waits impatiently for the real show to begin. --Tom Keogh

However, he becomes the object of bullying by the Cobras, a menacing gang of karate students, when he strikes up a relationship with Ali (Elisabeth Shue), the Cobra leader's ex-girlfriend. Eager to fight back and impress his new girlfriend, but afraid to confront the dangerous gang, Daniel asks his handyman Miyagi (Noriyuki Pat Morita), whom he learns is a master of the martial arts, to teach him karate. Miyagi teaches Daniel that karate is a mastery over the self - mind and body - and that fighting is always the last answer to a problem. Under Miyagi's guidance, Daniel develops not only physical skills but also the faith and self-confidence to compete despite tremendous odds as he encounters the fight of his life in the exciting finale to this entertaining film. The Karate Kid 2 (Dir. John G. Avildsen): Karate student Daniel Larusso (Macchio) accompanies his wise and whimsical teacher Mr. Miyagi (Morita), to his ancestral home in Okinawa. For Miyagi, it's an opportunity to see his father one last time and to rekindle a romance with his childhood sweetheart (Nobu McCarthy). But Miyagi's return also re-ignites a bitter feud with long-time enemy Sato (Danny Kamekona) - a feud that involves young Daniel in a brilliant collision of cultures and combat. Now, far away from the tournaments, the cheering crowds and the safety of home, Daniel will face his greatest challenge ever when the teacher becomes student, and the price of honour is life itself. The Karate Kid 3 (Dir. John G. Avildsen, 1989): When Daniel (Macchio) decides not to compete in the upcoming karate championship, he becomes the target vicious Cobra Kai student Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan), who is determined to win the title back. Standing firm, Daniel's mentor and trainer Mr. Miyagi (Morita) instructs him to ignore Mike's threats - and stay away from the tournament. But when Mike's relentless abuse escalates into blackmail, Daniel finds himself forced into competition - and at serious odds with Miyagi, the one person he cherishes most. Desperate, Daniel turns to another karate instructor, Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), whose violent combat techniques are directly opposed to Miyagi's wise instruction. But when Daniel realises that Terry and Mike are allied with Mr Miyagi's old nemesis Kreese (Martin Kove) in an elaborate set-up for revenge, he also knows he has alienated the only person who can help him.The Next Karate Kid (Dir. Christopher Cain, 1994): Noriyuki Pat Morita and Oscar-winner, Hilary Swank, co-star in The Next Karate Kid, the story of a rebellious teenager, Julie, who blossoms with a little help from her friends - in this case the wise Mr. Miyagi and a trio of Buddhist monks! • James And The Giant Peach [1996] James And The Giant Peach | DVD | (25/10/1999) from £5.29  |  Saving you £7.70 (59.30%)  |  RRP £12.99

Roald Dahl's modern classic for children becomes a delightful combination of live action and stop-motion animation by the team that made The Nightmare Before Christmas: director Henry Selick and producers Tim Burton (Batman) and Denise Di Novi. The story concerns young James (played for real and through voice-overs by Paul Terry), who is orphaned and left in the charge of two cruel aunts (Miriam Margolyes, Joanna Lumley). Rescued by a mysterious fellow (Pete Postlethwaite), James ends up inside a giant peach, drifting over the Atlantic Ocean in the company of a gentleman grasshopper (voiced by Simon Callow), a fast-talking centipede (Richard Dreyfuss), an anxious earthworm (David Thewlis), a matronly ladybug (Jane Leeves), and a sexy spider (Susan Sarandon). The collection of actors and their creepy-crawly alter egos are a delight, especially when some of the song-and-dance numbers (tunes are written by Randy Newman) get everyone going. --Tom Keogh

  • Road House [1989] Road House | DVD | (11/07/2002) from £3.39  |  Saving you £8.72 (67.10%)  |  RRP £12.99

Road House is one of those movies that helped usher out the era of action films that had feasible plot lines (and also helped reverse the direction of Patrick Swayze's career arc). Swayze stars as Dalton: a handsome, existential bouncer who owns both a degree in philosophy and a Mercedes and that's perhaps the most believable aspect of the whole movie. Dalton runs afoul of Wesley (Ben Gazzara), the meanest SOB round these parts, by taking up with his former girlfriend, Doc (Kelly Lynch)--the only woman in town with an IQ approaching double digits, even if she had unfathomably hooked up with such a lowlife. Swayze had complained about being typecast as beefcake when this was made, but that didn't stop him from revealing as much skin as possible. It's so insulting to its audience that it's nice to be able to turn the tables and laugh at the filmmakers.--David Kronke, Amazon.com

Harvard psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans, Beauty and the Beast) was roundly criticized for the creation of his feminist superhero, but it was his personal life, with his polyamorous relationship with his wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall, The Gift) and their lover, Olive (Bella Heathcote), that was more provocative than any adventure he had ever written.
