Based on the bestselling fantasy book series by George R.R. Martin, the hit fantasy series chronicles an epic struggle for power in a vast and violent kingdom. As the season begins, Daenerys Targaryen, accompanied by her Unsullied army and emboldened by Dothraki/Ironborn allies and her lethal trio of dragons, has finally set sail for Westeros with Tyrion Lannister, her newly appointed Hand. Jon Snow, memorably reanimated in S6, has apparently consolidated power in the North after his spectacular conquest of Ramsay Bolton in the Battle of the Bastards and the return of Winterfell to Stark control. In King's Landing, Cersei Lannister, bereft of any surviving heirs, has successfully seized the Iron Throne by using wildfire to incinerate the High Sparrow and other foes in the Sept of Baelor. But as these and other factions drive inexorably towards new alliances or (more likely) violent conflicts, the cold specter of another, apocalyptic threat in the form of an army of undead White Walkers expected to breach The Wall and invade the South threatens to undermine the status quo and obliterate the outcome of these smaller, alltoo-human rivalries. Episodes 1. Dragonstone 2. Stormborn 3. The Queen's Justice 4. The Spoils of War 5. Eastwatch 6. Beyond the Wall 7. The Dragon and the Wolf Conquest & Rebellion Told in the animated, storybook style of the History & Lore features, Game of Thrones: Conquest & Rebellion brings you the never-before-seen story of the turbulent events that shaped Westeros for thousands of years before the series start. Cast members Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger), Conleth Hill (Varys) and Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen) team up to narrate this digitally animated telling of Aegon Targaryen's attempts to conquer the Seven Kingdoms, written by show writer Dave Hill. By transplanting the classic haunted house scenario into space, Ridley Scott, together with screenwriters Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, produced a work of genuinely original cinematic sci-fi with Alien that, despite the passage of years and countless inferior imitations, remains shockingly fresh even after repeated viewing. Scott's legendary obsession with detail ensures that the setting is thoroughly conceived, while the Gothic production design and Jerry Goldsmith's wonderfully unsettling score produce a sense of disquiet from the outset: everything about the spaceship Nostromo--from Tupperware to toolboxes-seems oddly familiar yet disconcertingly ... well, alien.Nothing much to speak of happens for at least the first 30 minutes, and that in a way is the secret of the film's success: the audience has been nervously peering round every corner for so long that by the time the eponymous beast claims its first victim, the release of pent-up anxiety is all the more effective. Although Sigourney Weaver ultimately takes centre-stage, the ensemble cast is uniformly excellent. The remarkably low-tech effects still look good (better in many places than the CGI of the sequels), while the nightmarish quality of H.R. Giger's bio-mechanical creature and set design is enhanced by camerawork that tantalises by what it doesn't reveal. On the DVD: The director, audibly pausing to puff on his cigar at regular intervals, provides an insightful commentary which, in tandem with superior sound and picture, sheds light into some previously unexplored dark recesses of this much-analysed, much-discussed movie (why the crew eat muesli, for example, or where the "rain" in the engine room is coming from). Deleted scenes include the famous "cocoon" sequence, the completion of the creature's insect-like life-cycle for which cinema audiences had to wait until 1986 and James Cameron's Aliens. Isolated audio tracks, a picture gallery of production artwork and a "making of" documentary complete a highly attractive DVD package. --Mark Walker

  • Black Sails 1-4 [DVD] Black Sails 1-4 | DVD | (28/08/2017) from £24.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

Black Sails Season 1 1715. The Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean is at its apex. The former British colony of New Providence Island is now lawless territory, controlled by the most notorious pirate captains in history. The most feared among them is Captain Flint. But as the British Navy returns to these waters, threatening to exterminate Flint and his crew, another side of him emerges. Driven by deep, complicated, even romantic motives, Flint allies himself with the formidable Eleanor Guthrie, daughter of the local smuggling kingpin who turns the pirates loot into profits. Together, they forge a plan to hunt the ultimate prize, and by winning it, stave off reclamation of their home to ensure their survival. Arrayed against them are a series of opponents: rival captains, jealous of Flint's power; Eleanor's father, whose ambitions for the island conflict with his daughter s; and a young sailor, John Silver, recently recruited onto Flint s crew, who will somehow manage to constantly undermine his captain s agenda. Black Sails Season 2 The Walrus crew is stranded, with an army of Spanish soldiers standing between them and the precious Urca gold. And with their crimes against their brethren no longer a secret, Flint and Silver must join forces in a desperate bid for survival. Meanwhile, Eleanor Guthrie struggles to maintain her grip on Nassau, as a new breed of pirate arrives in the form of Ned Low, a man for whom violence isn't just a tool... it s a pastime. As blood is spilled, and tensions mount, Charles Vane must decide which he values more: Eleanor s life, or the respect of his men. And unbeknownst to all of them, a prize of immeasurable value has already been smuggled onto the island... one whose discovery will alter the very landscape of their world, and force everyone in Nassau toward the ultimate judgment: are they men, or are they monsters? Black Sails Season 3 In the wake of Charles Town, the world lives in fear of Captain Flint. But when his campaign of terror crosses over into madness, it falls to John Silver to locate the man within the monster. Meanwhile, with Eleanor Guthrie gone, Jack Rackham and Captain Charles Vane struggle to secure Nassau for the ages. All will be tested when a new threat arrives. It knows them. It understands them. And in the blink of an eye, it will turn them against each other. Black Sails Season 4 War has consumed the West Indies. While ELEANOR GUTHRIE and WOODES ROGERS hold Nassau, CAPTAIN FLINT sails to strike the final blow, and the legend of LONG JOHN SILVER builds in strength. But the closer civilization comes to defeat, the more desperately, and destructively, it will fight back...

  • The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Extended Edition Box Set) The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Extended Edition Box Set) | DVD | (10/12/2004) from £22.49  |  Saving you £42.50 (65.40%)  |  RRP £64.99

The extended editions of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings present the greatest trilogy in film history in the most ambitious sets in DVD history. In bringing J.R.R. Tolkien's nearly unfilmable work to the screen, Jackson benefited from extraordinary special effects, evocative New Zealand locales, and an exceptionally well-chosen cast, but most of all from his own adaptation with co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, preserving Tolkien's vision and often his very words, but also making logical changes to accommodate the medium of film. While purists complained about these changes and about characters and scenes left out of the films, the almost two additional hours of material in the extended editions (about 11 hours total) help appease them by delving more deeply into Tolkien's music, the characters, and loose ends that enrich the story, such as an explanation of the Faramir-Denethor relationship, and the appearance of the Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor. In addition, the extended editions offer more bridge material between the films, further confirming that the trilogy is really one long film presented in three pieces (which is why it's the greatest trilogy ever--there's no weak link). The scene of Galadriel's gifts to the Fellowship added to the first film proves significant over the course of the story, while the new Faramir scene at the end of the second film helps set up the third and the new Saruman scene at the beginning of the third film helps conclude the plot of the second. To top it all off, the extended editions offer four discs per film: two for the longer movie, plus four commentary tracks and stupendous DTS 6.1 ES sound; and two for the bonus material, which covers just about everything from script creation to special effects. The argument was that fans would need both versions because the bonus material is completely different, but the features on the theatrical releases are so vastly inferior that the only reason a fan would need them would be if they wanted to watch the shorter versions they saw in theaters (the last of which, The Return of the King, merely won 12 Oscars). The LOTR extended editions without exception have set the DVD standard by providing a richer film experience that pulls the three films together and further embraces Tolkien's world, a reference-quality home theater experience, and generous, intelligent, and engrossing bonus features. --David Horiuchi

GladiatorA big-budget summer epic with money to burn and a scale worthy of its golden Hollywood predecessors, Ridley Scott's Gladiator is a rousing, grisly, action-packed epic that takes moviemaking back to the Roman Empire via computer-generated visual effects. While not as fluid as the computer work done for, say, Titanic, it's an impressive achievement that will leave you marveling at the glory that was Rome, when you're not marveling at the glory that is Russell Crowe. Starring as the heroic general Maximus, Crowe firmly cements his star status both in terms of screen presence and acting chops, carrying the film on his decidedly non-computer-generated shoulders as he goes from brave general to wounded fugitive to stoic slave to gladiator hero. Gladiator's plot is a whirlwind of faux-Shakespearean machinations of death, betrayal, power plays, and secret identities (with lots of faux-Shakespearean dialogue ladled on to keep the proceedings appropriately "classical"), but it's all briskly shot, edited, and paced with a contemporary sensibility. Even the action scenes, somewhat muted but graphic in terms of implied violence and liberal bloodletting, are shot with a veracity that brings to mind--believe it or not--Saving Private Ryan, even if everyone is wearing a toga. As Crowe's nemesis, the evil emperor Commodus, Joaquin Phoenix chews scenery with authority, whether he's damning Maximus's popularity with the Roman mobs or lusting after his sister Lucilla (beautiful but distant Connie Nielsen); Oliver Reed, in his last role, hits the perfect notes of camp and gravitas as the slave owner who rescues Maximus from death and turns him into a coliseum star. Director Scott's visual flair is abundantly in evidence, with breathtaking shots and beautiful (albeit digital) landscapes, but it's Crowe's star power that will keep you in thrall--he's a true gladiator, worthy of his legendary status. Hail the conquering hero! --Mark Englehart

Titles Comprise: Dirty Harry: Harry Callahan is a tough streetwise San Francisco cop whom they call Dirty Harry. In this action classic you'll see why - and also why Clint Eastwood's reputation as a premier film star and moviemaker is secure. A rooftop sniper (Andy Robinson) calling himself Scorpio has killed twice and holds the city ransom with the threat of killing again. Harry will nail him one way or the other no matter what the system prescribes. Filming on location director Don Siegel made the City by the Bay a vital part of Dirty Harry a practice continued in its four sequels. Thirty years after its arrival the original remains one of the most gripping police thrillers ever made. Magnum Force: Underworld figures are being murdered all over San Francisco. One by one criminals who have eluded prosecution are getting the justice they deserve justice you'd think Detective Harry Callahan might approve of with a tight-lipped smile. But if you think so you've misjudged Harry - and so have the killers. Written by future directors John Milius and Michael Cimino this Dirty Harry sequel stars Clint Eastwood in his signature role of Callahan here facing an unexpected kind of lawbreaker: one who carries a badge. Sharpshooting rookie motorcycle policemen have turned vigilante. Their real enemy is the system. But the system is what Harry is sworn to protect. And he does - with Magnum Force! The Enforcer: When detective Harry Callahan stops a liquor store hostage standoff in his own no-nonsense way he gets busted back to personnel. But not for long. When terrorists rob an arms warehouse and go on a blood-soaked extortion spree San Francisco's leaders quickly seek out Callahan: The Enforcer. Clint Eastwood takes dead aim again in this third of his five Dirty Harry films. Presaging her four-time Emmy-winning stint as half of TV's Cagney and Lacey Tyne Daly co-stars as Harry's new partner who has two jobs: nailing the terrorists - and winning hard-boiled Harry's confidence. Stoked with brisk humor and hard-hitting mayhem The Enforcer carves another winning notch in the handle of Harry's .44 magnum. Sudden Impact: Sensitive to outcries of police brutality the superiors of San Francisco Detective Harry Callahan have sent him on an out-of-town assignment until things cool down. But wherever Harry goes things just get hotter. Clint Eastwood hits the mark again in Sudden Impact. Callahan's older dirtier and the world hasn't gotten better. Which means this fourth Dirty Harry movie (which Eastwood also directs) is explosively exciting as Callahan tracks a traumatized rape victim (Sondra Locke) coldly gunning down her bygone attackers. Through the five Callahan films the lawman always struck a powerful chord. But Sudden Impact is particularly potent fueled by the line that became a national catchphrase: Go ahead. Make my day. The Dead Pool: Fame isn't detective Harry Callahan's style. He dislikes being grouped with a rock star a film critic and a TV host all slain celebrities in a macabre betting pool called the 'Dead Pool'. Another name just got added and it's his...
