UK Release 5-Disc DVD Set (Tom Horn / The Towering Inferno / Bullitt / The Cincinnati Kid / Never So Few) - TOM HORN: The saga of Tom Horn - areal-life "enforcer" of Old West days - held a particular fascination for another legend. Hollywood icon Steve McQueen starred in and executive produced what would be his next-to-last movie, a gritty, exciting recreation of Horn's latter-day career in a turn-of-the-century West where gentler ways supplanted the law of the gun - and Horn would be an unwitting victim of that change. THE TOWERING INFERNO: The world's tallest building is skyscraping testimony to ingenuity and innovation. In the hands of "Master of Disaster" film producer Irwin Allen ("The Poseidon Adventure"), it's also the world's tallest matchstick. An all-star cast gathers for this tall story of lofty dimensions: eight Academy Award nominations and three Oscars. On the night of the building's dedication, fire erupts, trapping people on the upper floors... and igniting multiple tales of heroism and loss involving a firefighter (Steve McQueen), an architect (Paul Newman) and others caught in the steel-and-glass inferno (including William Holden, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire and Jennifer Jones). With Star power, pyrotechnics and suspense in abundance, THE TOWERING INFERNO sizzled at box offices worldwide. BULLTIT: Detective Frank Bullitt's new assignment seems routine: protecting a star witness for an important trial. But before the night is out, the witness lies dying, and the cool, no-nonsense Bullitt (Steve McQueen) won't rest until the shooters - and the kingpin pulling their strings - are nailed. From opening shot to closing shootout, BULLITT crackles with authenticity: on location San Francisco filming, crisp dialogue and to-the-letter police, hospital and morgue prodcedures. An Oscar winner for Best Film Editing (1968), this razor-edged thriller features one of cinema history's most memorable car chases. Buckle up... and brace for unbeatable action.

  • The Agony and the Ecstasy [DVD] [1965] The Agony and the Ecstasy | DVD | (12/03/2012) from £6.79  |  Saving you £3.20 (32.00%)  |  RRP £9.99

Carol Reed (The Third Man) directed this 1965 portrait of the relationship between Michelangelo (Charlton Heston) and Pope Julius II (Rex Harrison), who commissioned the artist to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Based on a novel by Irving Stone, the script of The Agony and the Ecstasy plods along, juggling the dynamics between the two men along with a somewhat perfunctory love story and distracting battle sequences. Reed seems more attuned to the nuances and great pains of the artistic process, as seen in sequences of Michelangelo working. But the overall focus of the film is unfortunately fuzzy. --Tom Keogh

MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI (La notte) invented a new film grammar with this masterwork. An iconic piece of challenging 1960s cinema and a gripping narrative in its own right, L'avventura concerns the enigmatic disappearance of a young woman during a yachting trip off the coast of Sicily, and the search taken up by her disaffected lover (Once Upon a Time in the West's GABRIELE FERZETTI) and best friend (L'eclisse's MONICA VITTI, in her breakout role). One of several features pairing British screen sweetheart Anna Neagle with the ever-popular Michael Wilding, this jaunty 'upstairs-downstairs' romantic comedy could hardly have failed to triumph at the box-office, and Spring in Park Lane would indeed prove the most successful British film of 1948 - its fairytale scenes and witty reversal of social roles offering cinemagoers a welcome antidote to post-war austerity. The film, which also marked another major success for Neagle's husband, direct.

  • Coppelia - Delibes [1993] Coppelia - Delibes | DVD | (23/10/2000) from £10.59  |  Saving you £7.40 (41.10%)  |  RRP £17.99

Scintillating" is the word which comes to mind to describe this performance of Delibes' Coppélia. Both the story and music (here presented in 2.0 Dolby stereo only, which is a shame) are among the most robust in the tradition, and here Oleg Vinogradov's choreography gives us the most extrovert depiction of an already extrovert subject. Highlights abound, but Irina Shapchits's Swanilda and Petr Rusanov's Coppelius are particularly delightful. The former is a boisterous, tomboyish interpretation, providing an additional dimension of contrast with the soullessness of Coppelius' dolls, while the latter eschews the bumbling eccentricity sometimes imposed on the role and instead depicts the dollmaker as an almost wraith-like, Mephistophelian figure. The disc carries one multi-angle option plus a DVD-ROM article by Harlow Robinson which includes a Web link to the label's home page, which is just as well given the drab, parsimonious nature of the accompanying black-and-white booklet. However, just buy this disc for the spectacular performance--you'll be glad you did. --Roger Thomas

The Rescue: Arriving on the planet Dido in the late 25th Century the time travellers come upon a crashed spaceship from Earth. Its two occupants - a paralysed man named Bennett and a young girl Vicki - are living in fear of a creature called Koquillion a native whose people have apparently killed the other members of the human expedition. However the Doctor quickly deduces that Koquillion is in fact Bennett in disguise; it was he who killed the others in order to conceal an earlier murder he had committed on the ship. The Romans: The four time travellers are enjoying a rare holiday staying at a villa not far from Rome in the year 64 AD. The Doctor soon becomes restless and sets off to visit the city taking Vicki with him. In their absence Ian and Barbara are kidnapped by slave traders. Having been mistaken for the famous lyre player Maximus Pettulian and asked to perform at the Emperor Nero's Court the Doctor has to devise ever more elaborate schemes to avoid revealing that he cannot actually play the instrument. Ian meanwhile becomes a galley slave while Barbara is sold to Nero's slave buyer Tavius at an auction in Rome. Ian and a fellow slave named Delos escape from the galley when it is wrecked in a storm and make their way to Rome to try to find and rescue Barbara.
