  • Around The World In 80 Days [2002] Around The World In 80 Days | DVD | (22/09/2003) from £10.00  |  Saving you £9.99 (50.00%)  |  RRP £19.99

In 1989 Michael Palin recreated the famous voyage made in 1873 by Phileas Fogg in Jules Verne's epic Around the World in 80 Days. This 10-part (eight-hour) BBC documentary featured Palin and his passepartout using only the modes of transport available to the novelist's intrepid traveller. Hiring Palin was the masterstroke that ensured the series became a television milestone; despite being one of the comedy-surrealists of Monty Python's Flying Circus and the perpetrator of Ripping Yarns, he proved to be the most amiable travelling companion imaginable. His charm and ingenuity, coupled with the race-against-time format and the opportunity to visit at second-hand places most of us will never see, made Around the World in 80 Days an unmissable television event. So much so that Palin soon returned to the travel format in Pole to Pole (1992), Full Circle (1997) and Sahara (2002). --Gary S Dalkin

  • The Nazis - A Warning From History [1997] The Nazis - A Warning From History | DVD | (24/05/2004) from £4.89  |  Saving you £15.10 (75.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

Combining unseen archive footage and a wealth of interview material with "ordinary" people who witnessed or even participated in Hitler's reign, this eight part 1997 documentary brought fresh light to bear on the rise and fall of The Third Reich. Inevitably, the episode dealing with the Holocaust immobilises the viewer in its harrowing detail and a further blow against that rump of humanity who refuse to believe the genocide ever occurred. Yet of great interest also is the depiction of the nature of Hitler's dictatorship. He was, it seems, not a driven, workaholic ideologue but a lazy man who, having set his ideas in motion was content to let his subordinates do all the administrative work, fighting for his favour. The series also featured interviews with unrepentant Nazis. There's a telling moment in which an interviewer confronts an elderly woman with a letter of complaint to the Nazi authorities about a supposedly "subversive" neighbour, bearing her signature. The letter sent the hapless neighbour to her death. At first the woman denies knowledge of the incident, then, when faced with the evidence, glibly wonders why anyone should still bother about events that occurred so long ago. This series shows us exactly why. --David Stubbs

  • Vampir Cuadecuc [Blu-ray] Vampir Cuadecuc | Blu Ray | (09/10/2017) from £13.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

Made in Spain while General Franco was still in power and shown clandestinely, Pere Portabella's extraordinary Vampir Cuadecuc ostensibly follows the filming of Jess Franco's shocker El conde Dracula (Count Dracula, 1970) starring Christopher Lee, Herbert Lom and the exquisite Soledad Miranda. This experimental 'making of' documentary and investigation into the myth of the vampire, becomes a powerful political metaphor for bloodthirsty fascism epitomised by Franco and tyrants like him, a witty allegory with Dracula as the dictator whose demise is certain. Dispensing almost entirely with dialogue, Portabella utilises an abstract, fabulously idiosyncratic soundscape created by renowned Catalan artist and musician Carles Santos. The effect is surreal and wondrous to behold. Our release is presented from a new HD transfer of the film and features a new and exclusive interview with director Pere Portabella, plus two short films and more. BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS: Vampir Cuadecuc (1971) presented from a new HD restoration from original materials A new interview with director Pere Portabella A new filmed introduction with writer and curator by William Fowler Pere Portabella s short films La Tempesta (2003) and No Al No (2006). Booklet featuring a new essay on the film by journalist Stanley Schtinter Original soundtrack in Dual Mono 16-bit LPCM audio
