Elvis Presley - Aloha From Hawaii | DVD | (12/07/2004)
from £33.99
| Saving you £-6.00 (N/A%)
| RRP Elvis Presley's performing career, punctuated by its extra-musical achievement as the first global satellite broadcast devoted to a single entertainer. Both the broadcast and its companion album captured the King in his most grandiose persona, fuelled by Hollywood scale and Vegas glitz, as a caped pop superhero. He may have looked trim, but posthumous accounts (especially Peter Guralnick's Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley, the second volume in his definitive biography) confirm what a second look suggests--on this evening, Elvis was alternately overwhelmed and distracted, bravura renditions of signature songs (most triumphantly, the "American Trilogy" medley originated by Mickey Newbury) offset by less-focused readings. Fans may still savour a generous and diverse song list, but viewed beside Presley's earlier, more consistent performances (including a rehearsal the previous night, since released as The Alternate Aloha Concert), this legendary concert anticipates Presley's imminent decline. In this remastered version, three songs have been deleted due to music clearance issues, while four songs taped after the actual show have been inserted. A fifth bonus track, "No More," makes its first appearance on video. --Sam Sutherland

Elvis Presley - Elvis 56 | DVD | (16/10/1998)
from £39.99
| Saving you £-22.00 (N/A%)
| RRP This 1987 documentary is distinguished by both its smart narrative premise and wonderful performance footage of Elvis Presley at the dawn of his remarkable career. With the King's melodramatic life already a familiar subject for film and print biographies, producer-directors Alan and Susan Raymond instead shaped this hour-long profile around the year that saw the charismatic Memphis singer's eruption as a pop sensation. By taking that selective path, and focusing tightly on Presley's crucial transition to a major record deal, national media exposure and the first decisive steps in his subsequent movie career, Elvis '56 achieves a unique cohesion while legitimately celebrating a remarkable period of growth. With the Band's Levon Helm narrating in his salty Arkansas drawl, the story effectively conveys Elvis' Southern perspective, while evocative use of Alfred Wertheimer's celebrated black-and-white still portraits sustains a visual style carrying over to the programme's real high points: early stage and television appearances by Presley and his original trio, later augmented into a quartet. Among the highlights are historic slots on Milton Berle's and Steve Allen's variety shows: we see the joyous physicality that made the Berle performance a topic of outrage (and, of course, a swoon-worthy moment for female fans), as well as Allen's glib solution to censors' worries, forcing a static, tail-coated Presley to sing "Hound Dog" to a basset hound. --Sam Sutherland

Genesis - The Way We Walk - Live In Concert | DVD | (03/12/2001)
from £33.86
| Saving you £-13.87 (N/A%)
| RRP For Genesis fans old and new, The Way We Walk--Live in Concert has definitely been worth the wait. Recorded at London's Earl's Court in November 1992 as part of the group's 56-date world tour, the footage recreates one of their most lavish live tours ever. With a back-stage crew of over a 100, giant video screens and state-of-the-art lighting this was a massive event. The DVD is an equally colossal affair, incorporating over eight hours of concert footage on two discs (a two-hour concert recorded from four separate camera angles). The multi-camera presentation is amazing, providing a unique front-row perspective of all the stage action. The star of the concert is undoubtedly Phil Collins who leaps around, and batters his drum kit like a hormonal teenager. His evangelical introduction to "Jesus He Knows Me" is particularly fitting and amusing. There are also performances of some of Genesis' greatest hits, including "Dance on a Volcano", "Home By the Sea" and! "Invisible Touch". The re-mastered introduction to "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" sounds tremendous, with the flashing video screens creating an Armageddon-style atmosphere. Audience favourite "Turn It On Again" provides the ultimate ending to the show. On the DVD: The remixed, surround sound audio track is excellent but despite the multi-camera options the quality of the visual material fails to withstand the rigours of digital presentation. The uninterrupted group commentary is also disappointing, with too many lengthy silences, unnecessary disturbances (mobile phones ringing, unrelated discussions) and little new information about the tour given. The other extras are far more sophisticated such as the comprehensive interviews with Banks, Rutherford and Collins. The original tour programme (including text and photographs) can also be flicked through on screen. The "full-motion" menus are fun and easy to use.--John Galilee
