IN 1962 FOUR YOUNG MEN JOHN LENNON, PAUL McCARTNEY, GEORGE HARRISON AND RINGO STARR CAME TOGETHER TO FORM THE 20TH CENTURY MUSICAL PHENOMENON KNOWN AS, THE BEATLES. The band stormed Europe in 1963, and, in 1964, they conquered America. Their groundbreaking world tours changed global youth culture forever and, arguably, invented mass entertainment as we know it today. All the while, the group were composing and recording a series of extraordinarily successful singles and albums. However the relentless pressure of such unprecedented fame, that in 1966 became uncontrollable turmoil, led to the decision to stop touring. In the ensuing years The Beatles were then free to focus on a series of albums that changed the face of recorded music. Master storyteller and Oscar® winner*, Ron Howard, explores this incredible journey in his own unique way: How did The Beatles do this? How did they cope with all the fame and pressure? How did they not only survive, but go on to revolutionise popular music? With original interviews, footage, staggering live performances, and the intimate study of character that Ron Howard is known for, he puts us right inside this extraordinary adventure, answering the question everyone always wants to know: What was it like to be there?!!

  • Andrew Lloyd Webber - The Royal Albert Hall Celebration [1998] Andrew Lloyd Webber - The Royal Albert Hall Celebration | DVD | (16/10/2000) from £6.89  |  Saving you £13.10 (65.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

In 1998, a concert celebrated Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday at the Royal Albert Hall. It featured more than two hours of hits from a body of work spanning almost three decades. In this record of a memorable night, star after star steps onto a massive, Eurovision-style set to revisit golden moments in their long association with Britain's most successful composer of musicals. Elaine Paige in big frocks and even bigger voice delivers "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" and "Memory" with her usual power; Michael Ball and Donny Osmond stretch the last vestiges of boyish charm to the very limits but still sound great; and Boyzone get the youth vote. Then there are Kiri te Kanawa, Bonnie Tyler, Tina Arena and of course, another encore for Julian Lloyd Webber and those Variations on the cello. But the stars are Sir Andrew's ex-wife Sarah Brightman in an outstanding selection from The Phantom of the Opera (probably his best work), Antonio Banderos who really can sing, and Glenn Close, a stupendous, moving Norma Desmond in songs from Sunset Boulevard. All in all, a deserved celebration for someone who has given so many people a great deal of pleasure, and a treat for musicals fans of all ages. --Piers Ford

  • Led Zeppelin [2003] Led Zeppelin | DVD | (26/05/2003) from £17.79  |  Saving you £5.27 (21.10%)  |  RRP £24.99

Legendary and long sought-after, this live Led Zeppelin collection is nothing less than the rock music equivalent of the Holy Grail. Quite simply, this is what all the fuss was about. Given that they were the biggest band in the world, Zeppelin were notoriously camera-shy in their heyday. Their official filmic legacy until now has been just the fascinating but flawed The Song Remains the Same. While this new set presents some previously unseen footage from the same 1973 Madison Square Garden gigs, its real wonders lie in the earlier (1970) Royal Albert Hall footage and the later Earls Court (1975) and Knebworth (1979) concerts. Everything here looks and sounds new-minted, thanks to painstaking restoration and remastering of both audio and visual sources, a Herculean labour of love on the part of co-producer Dick Carruthers working hand-in-glove with Jimmy Page. Trawling through thousands of yards of previously unseen film and unheard tape recordings--some with missing visuals, some with missing audio--Page and Carruthers have chosen only the best possible footage available. They were also at pains to make the segments segue seamlessly so that the viewer is treated to what feels like a continuous concert--just sample the transition from a grainy Super 8 "Immigrant Song" (Sydney, 1972) to "Black Dog" at MSG. Highlights? It's not hyperbole to say that every powerhouse minute of this collection (some 230 minutes of concert footage plus another hour and a half of extra DVD material) is a rare musical and visual treat. But hearing Page's violin bow work on "Dazed and Confused" in DTS or Dolby 5.1 is an experience not soon forgotten. On the DVD: Led Zeppelin two-disc set presents all the footage in pristine 4:3 picture ratio (the Madison Square Garden footage is letterboxed) with Dolby 5.1, DTS or PCM Stereo sound options. Note that the audio is uncompressed for maximum ear-shattering enjoyment. The menu screens do not pop up beforehand, but have to be selected. It's well worth doing so. Enjoy the music first, then discover that even the menus have been painstakingly designed to provide still more unseen footage and unheard recordings (some screens don't cycle round, but present another song in its entirety). Extras include rare TV appearances, interviews and bootleg footage. --Mark Walker

  • Michael Jackson - Dangerous - The Short Films [1993] Michael Jackson - Dangerous - The Short Films | DVD | (12/11/2001) from £6.99  |  Saving you £-1.00 (-16.70%)  |  RRP £5.99

Clocking in at just under two hours long, Dangerous: The Short Films contains all the videos from Michael Jackson's album of the same name. Whatever your opinion of the man himself, you cannot deny his abilities as one of the world's finest showmen and his videos are never anything less than spectacular. There was a time when the screening of a new Michael Jackson video was a huge global event, drawing in massive global audiences. This had a downside when "Black Or White" was first screened, as the final segment in which Michael morphs backwards and forwards from a panther form and destroys a car, bar and most of a street caused huge controversy due to its perceived endorsement of vandalism. To the compilers' credit, the entire video is included here but with a full explanation of the ending and a warning not to copy it. For the converted this will be a worthy addition to the collection. For the more cynical, this is a fascinating if somewhat uneasy look at one of pop's most enigmatic and bizarre characters. On the DVD: With a wealth of rare behind-the-scenes footage and a selection of rarely seen live performances, such as a lavish rendition of "Heal The World" from the Super Bowl, the DVD certainly packs on the extras. There is also extensive footage from shoots of the video, as well as those of "Remember The Time" and "In The Closet" complete with fascinating insights from co-stars Eddie Murphy and Naomi Campbell. Other extras include Grammy Awards and NAACP Awards highlights which depending on your opinion of the man in question can be seen as either fitting tributes to the King of Pop or nauseatingly over-sentimental sycophantic claptrap. --Helen Marquis
