  • Peter Gabriel - Play Peter Gabriel - Play | DVD | (25/10/2004) from £4.80  |  Saving you £2.94 (16.30%)  |  RRP £17.99

Peter Gabriel has long been revered for his great songwriting, cinematic soundscapes, riveting concerts, and groundbreaking videos. Is it any surprise, then, that Play: The Videos is a music DVD for the ages? Nope. But that doesn't make it any less thrilling to watch or to listen to. Gabriel has assembled and polished an evening-filling 26 clips, all of them collaborations with innovative visual artists and directors like Stephen Johnson, Matt Mahurin, Francois Vogel, and Sean Penn. From the 1977 promo for "Modern Love" to 2003's "Growing Up" and much between, it's all here, and most viewers will be pleasantly surprised to find more than a couple videos they missed along the way. The focus is explicitly on conceptual pieces, the lone visual exception being a 2004 live rendition of "Games Without Frontiers" among the extras. Gabriel says in an accompanying essay that "music can stand more repetition than video and music together." Play gives us something extra in light of that: fresh 5.1 surround mixes in both Dolby Digital and DTS 96/24 for every track, with Gabriel/U2 production vet Daniel Lanois at the helm for most songs. (You'll get standard DTS sound from DTS-capable DVD players and, even better, lossless high-resolution audio from a DTS 96/24-compatible player.) The surround mixes are nothing short of revelatory, using all available channels to amplify Gabriel's ambient side while breaking out the percussion in fascinating ways and driving home the music's subterranean bass. --Michael Mikesell

  • ABBA - In Concert [1979] ABBA - In Concert | DVD | (29/03/2004) from £6.79  |  Saving you £3.20 (32.00%)  |  RRP £9.99

The title ABBA--In Concert is perhaps a little misleading in promising something a bit more "live" than is actually delivered. While this "official" TV film provides a fascinating insight into ABBA's 1979 tour of North America and Europe, the first segment of the 50-minute documentary is given over almost exclusively to behind-the-scenes material. As the film progresses and the action shifts from the US to London's Wembley, more live performance footage is included such as full length renditions of "Chiquitita", "Dancing Queen" and "Summer Night City". Made by Swedish television company SVT, and released for the first time on DVD in 2004 to coincide with ABBA's 30th anniversary, Urban Lasson's film begins by charting the group's attempts to crack the US. Rather than using a narrator to guide the viewer through the scenes, the film competently uses stylish images to tell the story of the group's trip across the continent. Recorded at the height of the disco era, the American footage is dominated by images of roller skaters, and some of the live material from the Wembley shows was shot by a roller-skating cameraman, so that he could move more quickly on stage to get the best shots. The four split just a couple of years after this tour, making the film one of a few quality recordings of the band playing live. It's a shame that additional full performances of other ABBA favourites were not recorded, or included in the final cut. However the disc does include previously unreleased DVD footage of "The Way Old Friends Do", "I Have A Dream" (Unedited Live Version) and "Thank You For The Music" to partially compensate for this. On the DVD:As well as the bonus concert performances, the DVD includes recently recorded interviews with the film director Urban Lasson, and the promoter and tour producer Thomas Johansson. A tour souvenir programme picture gallery is also included, and the disc comes with a 28-page colour booklet, which features an excellent extended essay by Carl Magnus Palm on the making of the film. The soundtrack has been painstakingly remastered in 5.1 Surround Sound, making the live performances sound stunning. --John Galilee

  • Till the Clouds Roll By Till the Clouds Roll By | DVD | (29/07/2003) from £2.49  |  Saving you £-1.49 (-49.80%)  |  RRP £2.99

Till the Clouds Roll By was the big MGM extravaganza of 1946, purporting to be a life of the first giant of the stage musical, Jerome Kern. Great chunks of Show Boat, Sweet Adeline and Sunny dominate while, in between excerpts, reliable Robert Walker does valiant work as Kern, lending a gentle credibility to even the most extravagant licenses taken by the writers. The liberties taken with Kern's story beggar belief, but what a fine excuse this is to sit back and enjoy a procession of gems from the great American songbook, performed by genuine legends. Judy Garland has two numbers as Marilyn Miller, both directed by husband Vincente Minnelli at the peak of their creative and personal relationships. Singing "Who?", she has to float down the proverbial staircase, obviously pregnant (Liza was born a short time later). Others to shine include Kathryn Grayson, June Allyson, Dinah Shore and, more bizarrely, a skinny young Sinatra drafted in at the last for a rousing "Old Man River". Most poignant of all is the presence of Lena Horne who, but for the racist values of Hollywood at the time, would have been a great film star. Ever confined to guest appearances, she here sings the songs of Show Boat's tragic half-caste Julie. When MGM filmed the musical in 1951, the same part went to Ava Gardner. On the DVD: Till the Clouds Roll By may boast digital remastering, but it could have done with a deal of restoration, too. Presented in 4:3 format, the picture quality is often pixellated and the soundtrack in "HiFi Stereo" is muffled and occasionally cracked. Considering its value as an archive of great performers, some rarely seen on film, this film deserves better DVD treatment. --Piers Ford

IN 1962 FOUR YOUNG MEN JOHN LENNON, PAUL McCARTNEY, GEORGE HARRISON AND RINGO STARR CAME TOGETHER TO FORM THE 20TH CENTURY MUSICAL PHENOMENON KNOWN AS, THE BEATLES. The band stormed Europe in 1963, and, in 1964, they conquered America. Their groundbreaking world tours changed global youth culture forever and, arguably, invented mass entertainment as we know it today. All the while, the group were composing and recording a series of extraordinarily successful singles and albums. However the relentless pressure of such unprecedented fame, that in 1966 became uncontrollable turmoil, led to the decision to stop touring. In the ensuing years The Beatles were then free to focus on a series of albums that changed the face of recorded music. Master storyteller and Oscar® winner*, Ron Howard, explores this incredible journey in his own unique way: How did The Beatles do this? How did they cope with all the fame and pressure? How did they not only survive, but go on to revolutionise popular music? With original interviews, footage, staggering live performances, and the intimate study of character that Ron Howard is known for, he puts us right inside this extraordinary adventure, answering the question everyone always wants to know: What was it like to be there?!!
