  • Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker | DVD | (22/12/2003) from £10.59  |  Saving you £7.40 (41.10%)  |  RRP £17.99

One of his earliest pieces of choreography, Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker is also one of his most charming and imaginative. Moving the Christmas party from a comfortable middle-class home to a Dickensian orphanage whose proprietors starve their wards to spoil their own children, it then shifts to a wonderland where sweets and sugar are a none-too-subtle metaphor for sexual awakening. In both worlds, Clara (Etta Murfitt) has to struggle to be heroine, or even a participant, in her own story and her struggle for the muscular, sexy Alan Vincent with her bitchy rival Sugar (Soranne Curtin) is not resolved until the last moments of the ballet. Along the way, Bourne finds charming and sexy ways to make all of the well-known genre moments of the score fresh and new--the Chinese dancers are a bunch of daffy marshmallow girls in pink, for example, whose dance is all strutting cuteness. There is a truly stunning transformation scene at the beginning of the waltz, which like much else in the score becomes a complex ensemble in which all the character dancers have their own things to do. Bourne's Nutcracker has become a popular favourite, and deservedly so. On the DVD: Matthew Bourne's Nutcrackercomes to DVD with no additional features. It is presented in a 16:9 anamorphic ratio and has sumptuous sound in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and L-PCM Stereo that does full justice to the Royal Philharmonic's eloquent performance of the score. --Roz Kaveney

  • State Of The Planet [2000] State Of The Planet | DVD | (27/09/2004) from £6.99  |  Saving you £5.62 (35.10%)  |  RRP £15.99

State of the Planet is long overdue. The BBC's Natural History Unit has finally delivered a hard-hitting documentary series on the extinction crisis many scientists believe is beginning to threaten the integrity of the entire biosphere. The combination of stunning camerawork, glossy production, David Attenborough's inspirational whispering narration and subject matter of the greatest and most urgent import makes State of the Planet riveting and required viewing. The three programmes cover the scientific understanding of the crisis, the extent to which humans are implicated in the wave of extinctions currently sweeping across our planet, and the ways in which we might slow or halt the current precipitous decline in Earth's biodiversity. In brief, the conclusions are that we know astonishingly little about the diversity of life on Earth, that our species is implicated at every level in precipitating this, the "sixth great mass extinction", and that we are only just beginning to see possible ways out of the environmental mess that we have created. Viewing the second programme (our malfeasance) directly before the third (our attempts at remediation) makes it abundantly clear that we have a very long way to go. The participation in the series of some of the world's leading authorities on biodiversity and extinction--Ed Wilson, Terry Erwin, Sylvia Earle, Sir Robert May--adds considerable gravity to Attenborough's already weighty presentation. However, the programmes would have been much improved had the experts been allotted more than the odd sound-bite. And why only three programmes on such an important and urgent issue? Even the terrifically expensive and time-consuming Walking with Dinosaurs got six. More of the serious stuff, please. --Chris Lavers

  • Wild Weather [2002] Wild Weather | DVD | (02/12/2002) from £5.69  |  Saving you £14.30 (71.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

Wild Weather is a major BBC documentary exploring the extremes of the world's climate with the engaging presenter Donal MacIntyre. The four one-hour programmes focus on wind, wet, cold and heat, and explore how these produce hurricanes, monsoons, ice storms and tornadoes, as well as regulate the global environment. MacIntyre, best known for his investigative series MacIntyre Undercover (1999), travels the world, from beneath the North Pole to the saturated humidity of the Belise tropical rainforest. Bringing to mind the daredevil John Noakes from 1970s Blue Peter, MacIntyre skydives, is battered by a wild tunnel, frozen in an ice-box, subjected to a reservoir flood and endures a marathon across the Sahara. Survivors' accounts tell the stories of such disasters as Hurricane Andrew, a New York state snow storm and the flood of Britain's eastern coast in 1953. The intelligent use of computer graphics enhances clear explanations of the jet stream, ocean currents and other phenomena, in a series which is part geography lesson (but with a great teacher), part reality TV entertainment show. Occasional flash-cut editing and some inappropriate techno/drum & bass on the soundtrack will irritate viewers who remember life before MTV, but otherwise this is an excellent mainstream documentary series. --Gary S Dalkin

  • More Than Honey [Blu-ray] More Than Honey | Blu Ray | (11/11/2013) from £7.69  |  Saving you £7.30 (48.70%)  |  RRP £14.99

Einstein once said: 'If bees ever die out mankind will have only four years left to live'. In the past five years billions of honeybees simply vanished for reasons still obscure. If the bees keep dying it will have drastic effects for humans as well: more than one third of our food production depends on pollination by honeybees and their life and death are linked to ours. Life without the bee is unthinkable. But between pesticides antibiotics and monoculture the queens and their workers are losing their power. More Than Honey a new documentary by the Swiss filmmaker Marcus Imhoof is looking into the fascinating world of bees showing small family beekeepers (including the beekeeper of Erste Foundation beehive Heidrun Singer) and industrialized honey farms. More Than Honey is a film about the relationship between mankind and honeybees about nature and about our future. Honeybees show us that stability is just as unhealthy as unlimited growth that crises and disasters are triggering evolution. Special Features: Interview with Director Markus Imhoof Deleted Scenes Making of Featurette Original Theatrical Trailer UK Theatrical Trailer Two versions of the film (one in the original language and one featuring a narration by John Hurt) Booklet (featuring an interview with Markus Imhoof and the Friends of the Earth '20 things you need to know about bees')
