Madagascar | DVD | (07/03/2011)
from £6.99 | Saving you £13.00 (65.00%) | RRP
This series explores the extraordinary wildlife and dramatic landscapes of one of the world's largest and strangest island. Lying just off the coast of Africa Madagascar is a land of misty mountains tropical rainforests and weird spiny desert scrub. Here the wildlife has evolved in splendid isolation to become bizarre and totally unique. The great mystery of Madagascar is why it has such a unique and varied flora and fauna - a diversity of life that makes even the famed Galapagos Islands pale by comparison. What is it that makes Madagascar so different from the rest of the world? This series finds clues from Madagascar's extraordinary animals plants and landscape to discover how the island's remarkable past has produced its intriguing present like the Tsingy - a series of jagged limestone peaks that have cut off animals in isolated gorges allowing them to evolve into their own unique species. On the east side of the island rugged mountains rise dramatically from the palm fringed Indian Ocean. Travelling from the highest mountains where trees are few and it's cold enough for frost through the lush cloaking rainforests down to the tropical coast discovering the ring-tailed lemurs the jewelled geckos and the giant predatory wasps. So what is it that has made this narrow eastern strip in particular so rich in life? South of Madagascar is home to its most extraordinary landscapes - from forests of 'upside down' trees to alien 'spiny deserts'. In stark contrast to the east this is a place that's bone-dry for most of the year yet it's extraordinarily rich in wildlife. Here only the toughest and most opportunistic survive and some of the strategies to survive here are ingenious. This DVD follows the long dry season of this landscape to see how life copes as it waits for the brief rains.

Penguin - Spy in the Huddle | DVD | (08/04/2013)
from £12.09 | Saving you £5.90 (32.80%) | RRP
From the makers of Earth flight and Polar Bear - Spy on the Ice, the spy cameras are back with this latest BBC series. This time they travel to Antarctica and the southern oceans, where they focus on the most charismatic and popular bird on Earth - the penguin. Spy cameras cleverly disguised as life size penguins infiltrate the colonies to capture their emotional and often amusing lives. The emperor penguin has the most incredible life story of any bird. Just as Polar Bear - Spy on the Ice changed the way we look at an iconic subject, the spy cameras give the emperor penguin's amazing story a fresh perspective. The Humboldt penguin lives in the hot desert regions of South America and its problems have more to do with heat than cold. The rock hopper is one of the more comical penguins nesting on cliffs in the Falklands islands, braving incredibly rough oceans to reach the shore. The trials and tribulations of these other penguins crosscut the narrative of the emperor penguin, highlighting the differences at the same stage in their lives. When the emperors huddle together to protect themselves against minus 60degree temperatures, Humboldt penguins are tolerating plus 40degrees in the driest desert on Earth! While emperors are negotiating huge snowdrifts, rock hoppers are trying to jump up vertical cliffs. 50 different spy cams reveal the secret lives of nature's most devoted parents. from £3.89 | Saving you £16.10 (80.50%) | RRP
At 4.6 billion years old, the Solar System is our solid, secure home in the Universe. But how did it come to be? We trace the system's birth from a thin cloud of dust and gas. Shocked by a nearby supernova, the pull of gravity and natural rotation spun it into a flat disc from which the Sun and planets coalesced. It all happened in the space of 700 million years, during which the planets jockeyed for position, dodging the brutal bombardment of deadly asteroids and setting into the neat, stable system that we now realise might be a rarity in the universe. Explore the history of our planets for the first time in spectacular 3-D!
