  • Rudolf Nureyev's Don Quichotte [2002] Rudolf Nureyev's Don Quichotte | DVD | (03/03/2003) from £11.97  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £24.99

Don Quichotte, composed by Ludwig Minkus for the Bolshoi in 1869, was relatively unknown in the West until Nureyev's new choreography--which naturally gave him centre stage as Basile--was introduced at the Vienna State Opera in 1966. A later production in 1981 forms the basis for this 2002 success by the Paris Opera. Don Quichotte is in some ways a misnomer for the ballet. Rather than being the dominant character, here the beloved hero of Cervantes' original novel and tilter at windmills is a catalyst for the troublesome events which beset the love story of Basile and Kitri. The dream in which the knight encounters the queen of the dryads becomes a glittering fault in the narrative. But there is no doubting the fluid delights of the pas de deux between Basile (Manual Legris) and Kitri (the enchanting Aurélie Dupont), always literally several steps ahead of their would-be romance spoilers, which rather overshadow the pathos of Jean-Marie Didière's Quichotte. Nureyev's triumph, though, remains the teeming ensemble dances that reaffirm the close marriage between Minkus's score and the unfolding drama, here immeasurably enhanced by Alexandre Beliaev's Goya-esque designs. Ermanno Florio's musical direction keeps the pace light and busy. On the DVD: Don Quichotte is presented in 16:9 video aspect ratio with a choice of stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS (by far the best) soundtracks: the quality is all you'd expect of a standard modern television broadcast, although the subtleties of the theatrical lighting don't always shine through. Extras are limited to previews of other TDK releases. --Piers Ford

  • A Tribute To Alvin Ailey [1990] A Tribute To Alvin Ailey | DVD | (18/12/2000) from £7.64  |  Saving you £7.36 (29.50%)  |  RRP £24.99

The legendary American choreographer Alvin Ailey is the subject of this well-balanced Tribute. Three of the four dances--"For Bird with Love", "Witness" and "Memoria"--are Ailey's, and the programme concludes with Ulysses Dove's "Episodes". Each is eloquently introduced by Judith Jamison, and each demonstrates the joyous, affectionate atmosphere which Ailey's work always seemed to generate. "For Bird with Love", a dance interpretation of the life of the seminal jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker, is probably the best known and best loved of the items presented here. Ailey always relied on an element of rather camp Broadway glitz to carry his ideas beyond the hardcore audience for modern dance, and much of the work presented here is closer to Cats than to Cunningham. Overall, though, these dances are superbly structured, graceful edifices which transcend their showbiz influences, and there are few examples of the craft that are so extrovertly welcoming to the viewer. --Roger Thomas

  • The Nutcracker The Nutcracker | DVD | (01/10/2001) from £22.10  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £24.99

Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker ballet has had many facelifts over the years. Peter Wright's Royal Ballet production is among the most imaginative, bringing together the narrative and fantasy aspects with relish. The first half of Act 1 is made busy but low-key, moving up a gear with the majestic Christmas tree "Transformation Scene", and ending with a gorgeous "Waltz of the Snowflakes". Act 2 decks out the lengthy sequence of character dances with vivid stage sets, culminating in a moving reconciliation between the magician Drosselmeyer and his nephew. Anthony Dowell brings authority, Ivan Putrov enthusiasm to their respective roles; Alina Cojocaru is sympathetic as Clara, and Miyako Yoshida steals the show as the Sugar-Plum Fairy. The Royal Opera House Orchestra take time to adjust to Evgeny Svetlanov's spacious tempos, but the showpieces have real emotional force. A Nutcracker for today, and a Christmas treat for all ages. On the DVD: The 16:9 anamorphic picture reproduces superbly, though rapid switches of camera angles in the ensemble scenes causes some blurring of focus. The PCM Stereo sound is equally realistic in its reproducing of the orchestra from the pit. Special features include insightful interviews with Dowell and Wright--with trilingual subtitles--a behind-the-scenes look at the "Transformation Scene", and alternative fixed wide shots of both that and the "Snowflakes" scenes. The 28 access points are given in the booklet's detailed synopsis. --Richard Whitehouse

  • Valery Gergiev - Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker Valery Gergiev - Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker | DVD | (03/12/2007) from £9.94  |  Saving you £10.05 (50.30%)  |  RRP £19.99

A magical new version of a much loved classic. Filmed in The Mariinsky Theatre St.Petersburg where it was first performed in 1892. Following Decca's beautiful Swan Lake comes another outstanding production on DVD from the Mariinsky Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker yet a Nutcracker with a twist. The 'adult' Nutcracker. Worlds away from the traditional and warm versions popular at Christmas this unconventional production reinterpreted by Russian emigre and world-renowned avantgarde artist Mikhail Shemiakin is surreal and at times disturbing making this DVD an unusual but essential part of any ballet lover's collection. Shemiakin also designs the eye-catching costumes and startling staging. Two of the Mariinsky's young stars Leonid Sarafanov and Irina Golub dance the main roles. Despite the startling aspects of this production none of the spectacle and awe-inspiring quality of their dancing is lost. Valery Gergiev conducts a complete and un-cut version of Tchaikovsky's popular and much-loved score.
