Jose Limon (1908-1972) was a Mexican-American choreographer who continues to be regarded as one of the modern dance world's seminal creative artists known for his intense dramatic presence and the theatricality and musicality of his dances. Here for the first time on video are three of his most famous works with the original casts filmed in their entirety for the Canadian Broadcasting Company in the 1950s.THE MOORS PAVANE (1949) is generally considered to be one of the great masterworks in the modern repertory. In the form of a Renaissance dance Limon destills the legend of Othello into a taut one-act human drama with music by Henry Pucell. Joining Limon are his close collaborators Lucas Hoving Pauline Koner and Betty Jones. Telecast date: March 6 1955.THE TRAITOR (1954) was Limon's response to the McCarthy hearings and the climate of betrayal that haunted the arts and entertainment fields during this period. Against a music score of violence passion and tenderness (by Gunther Schuller) the tragedy of Judas is portrayed as if it were taking place in modern times. Telecast date: October 23 1955.THE EMPEROR JONES (1956) is based upon the play by Eugene O'Neill wherein a fugitive from a chain gang sets himself up as the ruler of an island domain. • Black And White Ballet [1995] Black And White Ballet | DVD | (18/07/2000) from £18.75  |  Saving you £6.24 (25.00%)  |  RRP £24.99

Black and White Ballet is a treat for all fans of contemporary dance. The Nederlands Dans Theater's reputation is formidable in any event, but there's also a tradition in the Netherlands of producing modern dance for television and video media with enormous expertise, as owners of the superb Springdance VHS collections will testify. The advent of DVD has of course upped the ante considerably in terms of detail and overall production values, with this disc being a fine example of what can be achieved. The stark, monochromatic staging of this sequence of dance pieces is overlaid by a choice of music which encompasses Mozart, Bach and Webern, but it's the opening item, set to the first part of Steve Reich's Drumming, which is the most compelling, displaying as it does the power of dance to extrapolate from music rather than just accompany it. In terms of features, the disc is pretty spartan, with a stereo-only soundtrack and no extra features worthy of the name, but the overall result is nevertheless highly recommended.--Roger Thomas

Jean-Christophe Maillot's version of the popular classical ballet The Nutcracker recorded in the Festival Tent of Fontvieille in 1999 is an innovative interpretation of the well-known subject. Set in two acts the ballet reaches its climax in the second act: the world of circus then opens up to little Marie with a series of funny touching and poetic scenes that will delight and enchant both the young and old.

  • La Sylphide [2004] La Sylphide | DVD | (30/05/2005) from £21.05  |  Saving you £3.94 (15.80%)  |  RRP £24.99

The original choreography by Philippe Taglioni had changed ballet forever. It introduced constitutional features of Romantic Ballet as we know it. These include dance en pointe and the tutu which most certainly owe their omnipresence in ballet to the success of the 1832 staging of La Sylphide in Paris. Everything about the event combined to transform the ballet into a magical spectacle: the libretto inspired by romantic literature the bucolic exoticism of the village wedding festivities the dramatic realism of the Sylvan forest the eerie halo of the gas lights the aerial flights of the dancers the long diaphanous tulle costumes and the ballerina's variations en pointes. Through this work ballet master Philippe Taglioni managed to achieve a magical fusion between mime and artistic dance in a light and flowing style that gave birth to the first white act in the history of ballet.

  • Sleeping Beauty [1999] Sleeping Beauty | DVD | (05/04/2000) from £21.25  |  Saving you £3.74 (15.00%)  |  RRP £24.99

Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty is here transformed by the masterful contemporary choreographer Mats Ek into an allegory of repression, love and emotional maturity set in a bleak, stylised postmodern limbo which is both chilling and, just occasionally, bleakly humorous. Traditionalists may be flinching already, but this is a ballet which has always lent itself to this kind of treatment. Indeed, what many will think of as the "traditional" interpretation is in fact Diaghilev's forward-looking production of 1921, which had sets and costumes by Bakst and re-instrumentation by Stravinsky. Ek's Princess inhabits a world seemingly out of Fritz Lang, where Carabosse is a drug-dealing low-life and the Fairies are a gaggle of sneering girlies. Ek removes his work from the classical tradition to a large degree, but what goes in its place is a highly disciplined yet tactile and gut-wrenchingly emotive approach, conveying both the external and internal narratives of the work with unfailing conviction. --Roger Thomas
