Around the World in 80 Days: Michael Palin takes up the famous challenge. As he races across continents and against the clock Michael's charm and ingenuity delights the armchair traveller. Pole to Pole: Michael Palin's second televised challenge is to travel from the North to the South Pole by land and sea. The crossing is varied and frequently gruelling passing through Russia just days before the abortive Gorbachev coup then on through Turkey Egypt Sudan and South Africa hopefully arriving in time to catch the only ship from Africa to Antarctica! Full Circle: In Full Circle Michael Palin sets off from Diomede in the Bering Strait and hopes to return there one year later via Russia Japan Korea China Vietnam the Philippines Borneo Indonesia Australia New Zealand and the whole length of the Americas. But right from the start things don't go to plan... Sahara: Michael Palin's lust for travel is as strong as it was when he went around the world in 80 days from Pole to Pole and then Full Circle. His latest objective is one of the great challenges in world travel: crossing the Sahara Desert... Himalaya: In his most challenging journey yet Michael Palin tackles the Himalayas: the greatest mountain range on earth a virtually unbroken wall of rock stretching 1800 miles from the borders of Afghanistan to south-west China. Hemmingway Adventure: Palin journeys to Valencia in Spain following in the footsteps of his favourite author Ernest Hemmingway. Great Railway Journey: Derry or Londonderry depending on religion or which part of Ireland you're from is the starting point of Michael Palin's Great Irish Railway Journey. A journey which will take him from this ancient walled city to the most Western tip of Ireland. But it is far more than a sightseeing tour for veteran traveller Michael Palin. It is a quest for family roots an attempt to trace his great grandmother - Brita Gallagher - who set sail from Ireland 150 years ago during the potato famine bound for a new life in Burlington New Jersey USA. It is a trip along the Palin family line.

  • Shoah (and 4 Films After Shoah) [Masters of Cinema] [Blu-ray] Shoah (and 4 Films After Shoah) | Blu Ray | (30/01/2015) from £33.99  |  Saving you £36.00 (51.40%)  |  RRP £69.99

To write a review of a film such as Shoah seems an impossible task: how to sum up one of the most powerful discourses on film in such a way as to make people realise that this is a documentary of immense consequence, a documentary that is not easy to watch but important to watch, a documentary that not only records the facts but bears witness. We are commanded "Never forget"; this film helps us to fulfil that mandate, reverberating with the viewer long after the movie has ended. Yes, Holocaust films are plentiful, both fictional and non-, with titles such as The Last Days, Schindler's List and Life Is Beautiful entering the mainstream. But this is not a film about the Holocaust per se; this is a film about people. It's a meandering, nine-and-a-half-hour film that never shows graphic pictures or delves into the political aspects of what happened in Europe in the 1930s and 40s but talks with survivors, with SS men, with those who witnessed the extermination of 6 million Jews.Director Claude Lanzmann spent 11 years tracking people down, cajoling them into talking, asking them questions they didn't want to face. When soldiers refuse to appear on film, Lanzmann sneaks cameras in. When people are on the verge of breaking down and can't answer any more questions, Lanzmann asks anyway. He gives names to the victims--driving through a town that was predominantly Jewish before Hitler's time, a local points out which Jews owned what. Lanzmann travels the world, speaking to workers in Poland, survivors in Israel, officers in Germany. He is not a detached interviewer; his probings are deeply personal. One man farmed the land upon which Treblinka was built. "Didn't the screams bother you?" Lanzmann asks. When the farmer seems to brush the issues aside with a smile, Lanzmann's fury is noticeable. "Didn't all this bother you?" he demands angrily, only to be told, "When my neighbour cuts his thumb, I don't feel hurt." The responses, the details are difficult to hear but critical nonetheless. Shoahtells the story of the most horrifying event of the 20th century, not chronologically and not with historical detail, but in an even more important way: person by person. --Jenny Brown
