  • Carrie Limited Edition [Blu-ray] Carrie Limited Edition | Blu Ray | (11/12/2017) from £22.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

This terrifying adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel was directed by shock maestro Brian De Palma for maximum, no-holds-barred effect. Sissy Spacek stars as Carrie White, the beleaguered daughter of a religious kook (Piper Laurie) and a social outcast tormented by her cruel, insensitive classmates. When her rage turns into telekinetic powers, however, school's out in every sense of the word. De Palma's horrific climax in a school gym lingers forever in the memory, though the film is also built upon Spacek's remarkable performance and Piper Laurie's outlandishly creepy one. John Travolta has a small part as a thug, De Palma's future wife, Nancy Allen, is his girlfriend, and Amy Irving makes her screen debut as one of the girls giving Carrie a hard time.--Tom Keogh

  • Der Todesking Limited Edition [DVD] Der Todesking Limited Edition | DVD | (26/02/2018) from £24.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

The second feature film from German provocateur Jörg Buttgereit, director of Nekromantik and Nekromantik 2, Der Todesking (The King of Death) presents seven suicides across seven days of the week. As a chain letter from the self-proclaimed Brotherhood of the 7th Day circulates encouraging its recipients to end their lives, a series of grim murder-suicides unfold. In one vignette, a young woman massacres a room of concert-goers before turning the gun on herself; in another, a man, driven to madness by some unspecified mental disturbance, repeatedly slams his head into a wall before collapsing in a pool of his own blood These are just some of depictions of death and despair that make up the tortured fabric of Der Todesking. Regarded by many as director Jörg Buttgereit's most accomplished work, Der Todesking is an existential masterpiece - a powerfully haunting howl of rage from one of the genre's most underrated filmmakers. 3-DISC DIRECTOR-APPROVED LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS Director's approved HD transfer from the original 16mm negative High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations Original Stereo Audio (uncompressed PCM on the Blu-ray) Optional English subtitles Limited edition packaging featuring new artwork by Gilles Vranckx Limited edition certificate featuring original artwork Replica Brotherhood of the 7th Day Chain Letter Der Todesking Soundtrack CD Limited Edition 60-page book DISC 1 [BLU-RAY] & DISC 2 [DVD] ?DER TODESKING' Audio commentary by Jörg Buttgereit and co-writer Franz Rodenkirchen From Bundy to Lautréamont - Jörg Buttgereit in conversation with journalist Graham Rae at the 2016 Manchester Festival of Fantastic Films The Making of Der Todesking - vintage production featurette Footage from the original 1990 Berlin premiere Corpse Fucking Art - 1992 documentary bringing together the making of featurettes of Nekromantik, Der Todesking and Nekromantik 2 Der Gollob (1983, 25 mins) - short film by Jörg Buttgereit, newly transferred in HD and viewable with optional director's audio commentary Two short films by producer Manfred O. • Hammer House of Horror [DVD] Hammer House of Horror | DVD | (23/10/2017) from £26.67  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

Though Hammer Films ceased theatrical production in the mid-1970s, the TV series Hammer House of Horror afforded the studio a last hurrah in 1980. Though it uses original scripts rather than adaptations of published stories, the series feels like an update of Hammer's earlier Journey to the Unknown, with a mix of contemporary settings, predictable twist endings, mock-gruesome horror, mild sex, familiar TV faces and sly camp that puts it on the shelf somewhere between Nigel Kneale's Beasts and Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected. The shows are variously directed by Hammer regulars Don Sharp (Kiss of the Vampire), Peter Sasdy (Countess Dracula), Robert Young (Vampire Circus) and Alan Gibson (Dracula AD 1972). --Kim Newman Volume One Episodes: "The House That Bled to Death; "The Silent Scream"; "Two Faces of Evil". A box set is also available.

  • Paranormal Activity DVD Triple Pack (Paranormal Activity, Paranormal Activity 2, Paranormal Activity 3) Paranormal Activity DVD Triple Pack (Paranormal Activity, Paranormal Activity 2, Paranormal Activity 3) | DVD | (27/02/2012) from £23.51  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

A leaner, meaner, and altogether scarier entry in the Paranormal Activity horror franchise, Paranormal Activity 3 is a well-oiled scare machine that delivers the gut-wrenching shocks of the original 2007 film. Fans may initially groan over the plot, which takes the tried-and-true sequel tack of flashing back to the "origin" of the first film's phenomena;  we discover that the diabolical entity that plagued sisters Katie and Kristi (Katie Featherston and Sprague Grayden, both of whom return in "found footage" clips) has been after the girls since their adolescent years in the late '80s. There's an attempt to provide a reason for the haunting, which may or may not rankle franchise fans; its inclusion, however, doesn't interrupt the barrage of shudders and armrest-clutching frights encountered by the girls' father (Chris Smith), a wedding videographer whose skill with cameras uncovers glimpses of the monstrous presence in his house. Directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish) have a keen understanding of how to use the corners of their image to milk maximum suspense from a static shot or slow-moving pan, as shown in one of the film's most memorable scenes, in which a camera mounted on an oscillating fan first suggests and then reveals a terrifying moment. As before, the human element is the weakest link, though Chloe Csengery and Jessica Tyler Brown, as young Katie and Kristi, respectively, are convincingly hysterical at the proper moments. But one doesn't attend a Paranormal Activity film to see fine acting. The franchise is a thrill ride/rite of passage/endurance test for its loyal fans, and PA 3 has the horsepower to stand alongside the other pictures. --Paul Gaita

  • Stravinsky: The Firebird & Les Noces -- Royal Ballet [1996] Stravinsky: The Firebird & Les Noces -- Royal Ballet | DVD | (12/09/2002) from £20.41  |  Saving you £4.58 (18.30%)  |  RRP £24.99

Two very different Stravinsky ballets are here presented by The Royal Ballet: the traditional, colourful designs perfectly suit the opulence of The Firebird, contrasting with the later, more austere, ritualistic scoring and choreography of Les Noces ("The Wedding"). Firebird is a traditional fairytale: the Prince gets his girl (a princess, naturally), with a little help from a magical Firebird, by defeating the evil Kostchei, who's holding the Princess and her fellow maidens captive. The devil notoriously gets all the best tunes, and with the riveting presence of David Drew's Kostchei it's apparent that baddies get the best moves in dance, too. Leanne Benjamin is an immensely athletic Firebird and Jonathan Cope, as the Prince, dances with style and personality. Les Noces is, by contrast, a genuine ensemble piece, with the principals (the bride and groom) being almost less important than the corps de ballet itself. There are a few moments of less-than-perfect ensemble here, but these pale into insignificance in the face of the raw power of Stravinsky's angular music (scored for four pianos, percussion and chorus with solo voices). A third item finds Stravinsky conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra in his own Firebird Suite. The date was 1965 and he was a frail 83 at the time, but the concentration of the reading is compelling, as is his own stern visage, only breaking into a smile at the very end of the performance. This is an excellent filler for a first-rate ballet release. On the DVD: The Firebird & Les Noces on this disc are presented with terrific technical values, both visually and in sound quality (the Stravinsky archive performance is in mono, however, but it's perfectly respectable). This is a real feast for the eye, backed up by solid documentation in the booklet and excellent additional features--David Drew's arch and entertaining "Nijinska's World" and behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage--that will appeal to both seasoned ballet fans and those who are new to the art form. --Harriet Smith

  • The Hitcher (Special Edition) [1986] The Hitcher (Special Edition) | DVD | (14/07/2003) from £14.75  |  Saving you £-1.99 (-10.00%)  |  RRP £19.99

Made in 1984, The Hitcher is an update--in spirit at least--of Steven Spielberg's first feature film, 1971's Duel. Here C Thomas Howell plays a guy taking a drive-away car from Chicago to San Diego. On a whim, in the rain, and against his better judgment, he picks up a hitchhiker (Rutger Hauer). The hitcher quickly admits to being a murdering psychopath and once Howell finally gets him out of his car, he is pursued with all the vengeance of the ancient furies. We're never sure if the hitcher is a figment of his imagination, making Howell a schizophrenic killer, or if he's real and Howell is the random victim of a wandering madman, which is how his potential new girlfriend (Jennifer Jason Leigh) thinks of him. Either way, The Hitcher is great fun, kinda scary and teetering on the brink of "must see". --Andy Spletzer
