| RRP A fixture in the critical canon almost since its premiere, Sergei Eisenstein's legendary film about a 1905 naval mutiny was revolutionary in both form and content. Battleship Potemkin is celebrated for its dynamic compositional strength and editing of such frame-perfect precision that it's hard not to be swept along. Despite endless quotation and parody, the set-piece massacre on the Odessa Steps still packs a sledgehammer punch.First revealed at a special outdoor screening in front of an estimated 25,000 in Trafalgar Square in 2004, Pet Shop Boys' score, performed with the Dresdner Sinfoniker and orchestrated by Torsten Rasch, blends electronic beats with orchestral grandeur to create a contemporary cinematic experience.Extras· Hochhaussinfonie (2017, 68 mins): a multimedia musical production by the Dresdner Sinfoniker orchestra and Pet Shop Boys, conceived by Markus Rindt and directed by Sven Helbig, on the evening of 20 July 2006, in Dresden· Trafalgar Square Highlights (2004, 4 mins): a behind-the-scenes film when Pet Shop Boys performed their newly composed score for Battleship Potemkin, accompanied by the Dresdner Sinfoniker orchestra in Trafalgar Square, London· CD featuring the score by Pet Shop Boys and Dresdner Sinfoniker· Trailer (2025)· **LIMITED EDITION** Illustrated booklet featuring new writing by Chris Heath and Sarah Cleary, and archive pieces by Neil Tennant and Michael Brooke· First time the film has been available with the Pet Shop Boys score· Pet Shop Boys have a devoted fanbase across the globe· Battleship Potemkin is still regarded as a must-have disc in any serious film collection· 2025 is the centenary of Battleship Potemkin
Yojimbo & Sanjuro (4K UHD) | Blu Ray | (17/03/2025)
from £34.59

| RRP Yojimbo Like Seven Samurai (1954), Yojimbo was Kurosawa's tribute to the widescreen action Westerns of John Ford and was itself remade as a Western by Sergio Leone as A Fistful of Dollars (1964). Played by the great Toshiro Mifune, the film's enigmatic samurai is a scruffy and itinerant warrior who wanders into a strange town and right into the middle of a war between two clans. Showing his skills with the sword within minutes of his arrival, he soon has the town's rival factions competing for his services. Kurosawa's genius for storytelling combines with thrilling swordplay, a healthy dose of black humour, a soundtrack every bit as atmospheric and amusing as Ennio Morricone's, and a towering performance from Mifune, to make Yojimbo an irresistible widescreen action adventure.Sanjuro In response to the huge critical and commercial success of Yojimbo, Kurosawa and Mifune re-teamed a year later to make Sanjuro, a hilarious comedy of manners altogether more light-hearted than its predecessor. The story has Sanjuro (Mifune) running lazy rings around nine naïve and clean-cut samurai and two genteel ladies, whilst also cleaning up a spot of corruption in local government. Whilst Kurosawa plays most of it for laughs, expertly parodying the conventions of Japanese period action films, he stages a startling switch of mood with an intense finale which may well be the briefest, and most breathtaking duel in all cinema.Extras¢ Limited edition 2-disc set, 2 x 4K (2160p) UHD Blu-rays presented in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible)¢ Newly recorded interview with Jasper Sharp (2024)¢ Audio commentary on Yojimbo by film critic Philip Kemp¢ Introduction to Sanjuro by filmmaker Alex Cox (2003, 5 mins)¢ Interview with filmmaker Alex Cox (2003, 9 mins)¢ Original trailers for both films¢ **FIRST PRESSING ONLY** Illustrated booklet featuring new and archival essays on both films, original reviews and full film credits¢ Other extras TBC

Jean Vigo | A Curzon Collection - 4K UHD + Blu-ray Limited Edition | Blu Ray | (15/12/2025)
from £39.98
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP The complete works of French auteur Jean Vigo are now available on 4K UHD for the first time, on the 120th anniversary of his birth. This collection features Vigo's entire filmography - L'Atalante, Zéro de conduite, Taris, and à Propos de Nice - presented from a 4K restoration completed by Gaumont, La Cinematheque Francaise, and Martin Scorsese's The Film Foundation. This set also includes hours of special features, with alternate versions of the films, documentaries, short films, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and interviews. Vigo, the son of a notorious anarchist, spent most of his early life either on the run or in bad health. Despite these challenges, Vigo created spellbinding cinematic works of poetic realism, culminating in his only feature-length film, L'Atalante. Tragically, just weeks after the release of L'Atalante in 1934, Vigo died of tuberculosis, aged 29. His legacy has been firmly cemented in film history however; not just by the archivists and technicians who have preserved and restored his films, but also by the filmmakers who count Vigo as an inspiration: from the directors of the French New Wave and on to modern masters like Michel Gondry and Luca Guadagnino. Experience the magic for yourself today. Few artists in the history of cinema have won reputations so high by achievements so modest. If, that is, works of genius can be described as modest. - Lindsay Anderson The first time I saw L'Atalante, after one hour, I knelt in front of the screen and I remained in that position till the end. - Bernardo BertolucciLimited Edition 4K set includes:This four disc set includes one 4K UHD with the films, one Blu-ray with the films, and two Blu-rays with the special featuresPresented in a rigid slipcase containing the digipak, booklet and posters100-page booklet featuring a new essay by Ian Haydn Smith, archival writing by François Truffaut and James Agee, as well as essays, speeches, script extracts and unmade projects written by Jean Vigo3 collectible posters featuring 5 designs from throughout the release history of L'AtalanteNew cover artwork by Tony StellaSpecial Features:Young Devils in School: Zéro de Conduite - Rushes, Sound, and ImagesWinter Shooting: L'Atalante, Rushes and OuttakesZéro de conduite - second versionà propos de Nice - first version (featuring footage cut by Vigo)Musical scores for à propos de Nice by Marc Perrone (2001) and Stephen Horne & Frank Bockius (2017)Lines of the Hand (2015), a short film by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson - an adaptation of an unrealized script by Jean Vigo (Les lignes de la main)Filmmakers of Our Times: Jean Vigo - a feature-length documentary from 1964 by Jacques RozierLuce, About Jean Vigo (2016) - documentary featuring Luce Vigo, Jean Vigo's daughterThe Voyages of L'Atalante - a look at the various versions of the film released over the yearsFrom L'Atalante to L'Atalante - short film made as an intro to the 1990 restored versionAn introduction to L'Atalante by Martin ScorseseFrançois Truffaut and Eric Rohmer discuss L'Atalante (1968)Four restoration featurettesSounds Regained - a revealing insight into the audio restoration of the filmsJean Taris: Gaumont newsreelsExcerpt from Abel Gance's Napoléon - pillow-fight sequenceInterviews with Lucile Hadzihalilovic, Jean-Paul Civeyrac, Jacques Rozier, and Otar IosselianiTheatrical re-release trailer

| RRP From the director of The Cremator and Morgiana, Juraj Herz's distinctive, decadent film is adapted from the renowned novel by Jaroslav Havlicek. Set at the turn of the 19th-century in the final years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this atmospheric period drama is a bitter 'romance' which centres on the tragic marriage between two cousins. Stepa (the wonderful Iva Janzurova), is a vivacious, modern-minded, wealthy young woman, but who is desperately seeking love and happiness; Pavel (Petr Cepek), is an arrogant, self-serving retired army officer weighed down by debt, cynicism, and syphilis. Herz's lavish film evokes a pungent atmosphere of decay and features superb performances by its two leads, gorgeous costume and set design, and stunning cinematography by Dodo Simoncic.
