  • Tom's Midnight Garden [1999] Tom's Midnight Garden | DVD | (02/04/2001) from £9.45  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £15.99

Tom's Midnight Garden is a charming adaptation of Philippa Pearce's children's story. It's the 1950s, and young Tom Long (Anthony Way) is sent to stay at the house of an Aunt (Greta Scacchi) and Uncle (James Wilby) while his brother is poorly. All seems drearily disciplined until the downstairs grandfather clock strikes 13, and Tom discovers a secret garden of enormous size. There he meets a girl named Hatty (Florence Hoath), who seems to be both a part of and the answer to the magical mystery. Through the changing seasons the garden ages, and so does Hatty. Eventually all is revealed: the importance of a tree struck by lightning, the reclusive landlady in the attic (Joan Plowright), and the present-day setting of the film's opening with a grown-up Tom watching the house being torn down. Some amusing computer trickery allows for the redecoration of the house each time Tom travels in time, and also allows him to pass through solid objects in supernatural fashion. All of which makes the movie a visual feast for children. Although adults will think it rather stiffly directed, the poignant tale about what happens to memories and friendships as we grow old shines through, helped immensely by composer Debbie Wiseman's luminous music score. --Paul Tonks

  • Dinosaur - Collector's Edition (Disney) (2000) Dinosaur - Collector's Edition (Disney) (2000) | DVD | (26/03/2001) from £9.95  |  Saving you £11.23 (44.90%)  |  RRP £24.99

Dinosaurs come alive like never before in this costly computer-animated film from Disney. After a breathtaking opening (a dino egg is kidnapped), the film changes style; realistic dinosaurs are given human characteristics and voices. The kidnapped egg grows into an iguanodon named Aladar (voiced by DB Sweeney), who is raised by lemurs (shades of Tarzan) on a lush island void of other dinosaurs. When a meteorite destroys their island home in a thrilling sequence, the lemur family and Aladar become part of a dinosaur troop roaming the mainland deserts looking for the lush nesting grounds (shades of the fourth instalment of the Land Before Time series and Fantasia). Disney's use of cheeky modern slang (one lemur calls himself "a love monkey") is present, as is its typical capital-punishment narrative logic: anyone against our forward-thinking hero (or even disagreeing with him) ends up dead. Curiously, the meanies, a pair of carnotaurs following the group, are nameless and voiceless. This more realistic approach might have been a bigger wow, as in the BBC's Walking with Dinosaurs, which looked extraordinary with only a fraction of the budget. The complexity and scope of Dinosaur's visual scale is impressive, and group shots and a point-of-view angle are stunning. The film should be a favourite for the 6 to 11-year-old set. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

  • A Christmas Carol Super Play (with 3D Blu-ray) [2009] A Christmas Carol Super Play (with 3D Blu-ray) | Blu Ray | (08/11/2010) from £28.75  |  Saving you £1.24 (4.10%)  |  RRP £29.99

Fans of Robert Zemeckis's brilliant special effects, and of Jim Carrey's transformative acting abilities, will be swept away by their collaboration in the stunning A Christmas Carol. Perhaps more surprising is that Charles Dickens purists will also be impressed and captivated by this version of the oft-told tale--which is dark, complex, and in its way, uncompromising. Which is all to say that this Christmas Carol is an instant holiday classic, easily taking its place alongside the Alistair Sim version, the Patrick Stewart version, and even the Mr. Magoo version of the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and his ultimate holiday redemption. Carrey is dazzling as not only Scrooge, the most miserable, and miserly, man in 19th-century England, but as the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future. As with The Polar Express, Zemeckis animates the film over the actors' physical performances onscreen, but here, the emotion is intact--even heightened by the brilliant effects. Joining Carrey in the cast are terrific players, including Gary Oldman (Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and the ghost of Marley), Cary Elwes, Bob Hoskins, and Robin Wright Penn. But the heart of the film is Carrey, whose dramatic acting has shone in films like The Truman Show and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. The emotional connection Carrey makes with his characters is what brings Dickens's classic alive--and what connects the viewer with the true spirit of the holidays. "God bless us, every one". --A.T. • Transformers - The Movie Transformers - The Movie | DVD | (26/11/2001) from £5.99  |  Saving you £10.00 (62.50%)  |  RRP £15.99

In Transformers: The Movie it's the year 2005, and the universe is going right down the toilet. Not only have the heroic Autobots lost their homeworld of Cybertron to the evil Decepticons, a giant metallic planet named Unicron is on the prowl, treating solar systems like a gigantic buffet and gunning for the Autobots' matrix of leadership. Fortunately, struggling against the odds is what heroes do best, and it is indeed hard to keep a good robot down. As the battle rages from space to earth and back into space again, characters die, others are reborn and, ultimately, good must face evil in a climactic battle for the fate of the universe. When this animated film arrived in American cinemas in the mid-1980s, the Transformers--both the robot toys and the television show--were at the height of their popularity. Transformers The Movie took these battling 'bots and, er, transformed them into film stars, albeit of the cult variety. The animation is a bit touch-and-go: at its best, it's up there with classic Japanese manga; at it's worst, it reeks of horrible 80s assembly-line productions. And the plot is little more than an advert for the (then) new toys, many of which show up as main characters in the film (Hot Rod, Kup, Ultra Magnus, Galvatron, etc). However, some of the action sequences are indeed spectacular--especially the battle for Autobot City--and the violence is a bit intense for what is, basically, a kid's film (they may just be robots, but they still die, apparently). What really makes this film more than meets the eye, though, is the names who show up as voices in the credits: Leonard Nimoy, Judd Nelson, Robert Stack, Eric Idle and even Orson Welles, in one of his last roles, as Unicron. On the DVD: In order to please the growing numbers of hardcore Transformers fans out there, the DVD version of Transformers: The Movie has been beefed up with loads of extra features: the original theatrical trailer, introductory footage taken from the BBC's I Love 1984 and a picture gallery with music are all excellent additions, but best of all is Takara's "The Four Soldiers from the Sky". Though the dubbing and translation are a bit poor, it's still a rare opportunity to see a Transformers episode that never aired outside of Japan.--Robert Burrow

  • Surf's Up [Blu-ray] [2007] Surf's Up | Blu Ray | (10/12/2007) from £4.30  |  Saving you £15.00 (75.00%)  |  RRP £19.99

Surf's Up is a computer-animated sports mockumentary about penguin surfing contests, which makes it stand out from the crowd of penguin movies. The story unfolds as it would on any sports-channel on TV, with interviews (with penguins) overlapping footage of (penguin) surfing action, gradually unveiling the tale of Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf, Transformers), a young penguin from Antarctica with dreams of winning a surfing competition--a competition named after his idol, the missing Big Z (Jeff Bridges, The Big Lebowski). But when he joins the competition, Cody finds his zeal for winning may not be enough to defeat the cruel reigning champ, Tank Evans (Diedrich Bader, Grim & Evil). The story of Surf's Up is typical stuff: Youngster learns to value friendship over material success. But the documentary style gives the film a different rhythm from the usual feature-length cartoon; it stutters and skips around, dithers on side topics, and backtracks to catch up with supporting characters. Some viewers may be annoyed, but others--perhaps the more media-savvy--will find it a refreshing change of pace. (Kids who don't watch much sports, however, may just find it confusing.) Surf's Up also features the voices of James Woods (Hercules), Zooey Deschanel (Elf), and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). --Bret Fetzer
