  • Roobarb And Custard - The Complete Roobarb And Custard [1974] Roobarb And Custard - The Complete Roobarb And Custard | DVD | (16/06/2003) from £24.95  |  Saving you £-19.00 (-317.20%)  |  RRP £5.99

Directed by Bob Godfrey, who was also jointly responsible for its jelly-wobbly animation, written by Grange Calveley and narrated by the tirelessly chipper Richard Briers, Roobarb and Custard was one of the very great five-minute animated cartoon series of the 1970s. This complete edition contains all its 30 episodes. First broadcast in 1974, squeezed in just before the early evening news on the BBC, it was ostensibly aimed at schoolchildren. However, there's much for adults to enjoy in these episodes beyond the obvious nostalgia value. Roobarb is the breathlessly optimistic hound determined to reshape the universe according to his existential whims but who, like many dogs, is perpetually apt to bark up the wrong tree. Daily he tries to liven up the garden he inhabits, be it putting on a clown show on a rainy day or reinventing the day Thursday as Thorsday, thereby invoking the anger of the Norse Gods. All his efforts end in catastrophe, provoking the guffaws of the smug and cynical cat Custard and twittery snickers of the Greek chorus of birds in the trees. Deep truths about hubris and folly are revealed in these episodes. The makers of these cartoons, who clearly had a very good time working on them, see no reason not to avail themselves of all the surreal possibilities of animation, or to indulge in groan-inducing puns for that matter. From the cheesy soundtrack to the lateral flights of associative fancy, this is wonderful, timeless stuff that should give paws for thought for those who pooh-pooh 1970s cartoon canine capers. On the DVD: The Complete Roobarb and Custard has one extra feature--an interactive game in which you are invited to foil Custard by clicking a button to effect a Roobarb disguise. Adults may struggle to comprehend the rules, but they should present no problem to the more computer-adept under-10s. --David Stubbs

  • Stingray - Complete Series [1964] Stingray - Complete Series | DVD | (02/04/2001) from £16.99  |  Saving you £30.25 (50.40%)  |  RRP £59.99

Drums pound, building excitement; the music bursts into life with a cry of "Stingray! Stingray!" Who can resist? Especially when a dramatic voice announces, "Anything can happen in the next half hour!". Stingray (1964) was the show Gerry Anderson made just before he really hit the big time with Thunderbirds (1965), producing 39 episodes of the 21st-century adventures of Troy Tempest--tall, dark and handsome (his voice was based on James Garner) captain of the titular submarine. His mission: to protect the seas on behalf of WASP (World Aquanaut Security Patrol). With complex underwater model and puppet effects, this was ground-breaking television, especially as it was the first UK series to be made in colour, though for years it was only seen in black and white. Special effects director Derek Meddings later graduated to the James Bond movies, while Moneypenny herself (actress Lois Maxwell) voiced Atlanta Shore. Here, just as in the Bond movies, she played second fiddle in our hero's affections, the mute Marina becoming Stingray's sex-goddess. The end-credits even featured a song in her honour, "Aqua Maria", which became an international hit. As for the bad guys: half-man, half-fish Titan and his Terror Fish wage dastardly war against humanity and the peaceful underwater citizens of Pacifica. Four decades on the model and underwater sequences still impress, and surely much of the inspiration for the underwater city in The Phantom Menace came from locations in Stingray. Whether as bizarre 60s nostalgia, or winning a new generation of fans, Stingray remains eccentric cult family entertainment. --Gary S Dalkin

  • Cinderella 2 - Dreams Come True [2001] Cinderella 2 - Dreams Come True | DVD | (11/02/2002) from £4.18  |  Saving you £-1.99 (-10.00%)  |  RRP £19.99

Disney has once again "sequelised" a classic feature with Cinderella II: Dreams Come True. With smart foresight, the filmmakers choose to go with three snappy short films to comprise this 73-minute feature with the Fairy Godmother granting wishes to various characters. In the opening short, Cinderella must pursue life as queen. Several feathers are ruffled as she brings her down-home ways to the castle (bring the commoners in and open those darn curtains). In the other tales, one of Cinderella's animal pals receives a chance to see the world quite differently and finally, Anastasia, Cinderella's formerly evil stepsister, finds love with a little help. As with the other sequels, the look of the film helps bring the distance between the original and the sequel (here over 50 years) come together seamlessly. Little ones from age four to nine should be entertained while purists may be a bit aghast. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

  • Pokemon 3: The Movie [2001] Pokemon 3: The Movie | DVD | (08/10/2001) from £20.78  |  Saving you £-6.79 (-48.50%)  |  RRP £13.99

The most elaborate of the features to date, Pokémon 3: Spell of the Unown introduces new Pokémon that debuted in the fall of 2000 in the Gold and Silver-edition Game Boy games. En route to the Johto Tournament, Ash, Brock and Misty visit the mountain village of Greenfield, where they encounter an 8-year-old girl named Molly. Her father, Professor Spencer Hale, disappeared when he set off to study the Unown, a group of 26 Pokémon that resemble letters. The Unown build a baroque crystalline shell around Molly's palatial home, send the leonine Entei to watch over her and grant whatever she wishes--except the return of her father. What Molly really wants is a family: she refers to Entei as her father and has him kidnap Ash's mum to be her mother. Ash charges to the rescue with the help of Pikachu, Charizard and Cyndaquil. In the climactic battle, Ash is joined by Brock and Misty, as well as the usually villainous Team Rocket. ("We figure if we don't help you, we're outta showbiz," Meowth explains.) Molly's father eventually reappears, but the viewer never sees the reunion with his daughter. Ash, Molly and the other two-dimensional characters simply don't fit into three-dimensional, computer-generated crystal settings, and large sections of Pokémon 3 look like two films unsuccessfully spliced together. --Charles Solomon, Amazon.com.

  • Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs [1937] Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs | DVD | (01/10/2001) from £13.99  |  Saving you £-0.01 (-0.10%)  |  RRP £19.99

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was nicknamed "Disney's Folly" by contemporary observers; they doubted that the short cartoons shown before the main film could ever successfully make the transition from filler to feature presentation. Surely, no one would sit still for over an hour to watch an animated film, their eyes smarting from the bright colours on screen? Fortunately, Walt Disney and his army of artists persisted and the world's first full-length animated feature was finally released in 1937 to widespread acclaim.Adapted from the Grimm fairytale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is chillingly dark in places, reflecting its roots in European folklore, but the deft Disney touch ensures that the overall tone remains light and the story develops apace, swept along on the perfect musical score. Any lingering gloom is quickly dispelled by the superbly characterised dwarfs and by the humorous antics of the various irresistible fauna that threaten to steal the show in several scenes. The pioneering animation is breathtaking and songs such as "Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho" and "Whistle While You Work", now firmly embedded in popular culture, are seamlessly interwoven with the action.Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs happens to be an interesting technological milestone in cinema history--it is also an enduring masterpiece of family entertainment. To the millions who have fallen under its spell over the years, this magical fairy tale remains one of Disney's most enchanting and best-loved films. Only Grumpy could resist. --Helen Baker
