Arthur Christmas (Blu-ray 3D) | Blu Ray | (19/11/2012)
from £3.99 | Saving you £26.00 (86.70%) | RRP
Aardman Animation manages to strike the perfect balance between comedy, creativity, and holiday spirit in this Christmas film that isn't about an aardvark, but Santa, his dysfunctional family, and a Christmas in jeopardy. Arthur Christmas takes on the age-old question of how Santa can possibly deliver gifts to every child in the world in one evening. The answer: with a lot of high-tech logistics and gadgetry and absolute military precision coordinated by Santa's son Steve. While Santa's other bumbling son Arthur deals with the stacks of letters from children, Steve and his tech-savvy crew coordinate virtually everything else to ensure the successful mission of delivering presents around the globe on Christmas Eve. Meanwhile, soon-to-be-retiring Santa simply does as he's told, and centenarian Grand-Santa watches the whole procedure on TV from the comfort of his easy chair. But when one little girl's present doesn't get delivered on Christmas Eve, it raises the question of just what is an acceptable margin of error when you're talking about children and Santa Claus--something that Steve, Arthur, Santa, and Grand-Santa don't quite agree on. Thus begins a very unusual, highly comical last-ditch effort by Arthur, Grand-Santa, and a wrapping elf named Bryony to deliver the forgotten present. The film is rife with funny scenes and characters, features some amazing CGI imagery that looks great on the big screen, and utilises a host of talented voice artists, including James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Bill Nighy, Jim Broadbent, Joan Cusack, and Eva Longoria. But most impressive is that along with all the humour and technological wizardry we get the perfect dose of holiday sentiment and the message that every child matters, especially on Christmas. Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray) | Blu Ray | (17/09/2012)
from £4.79 | Saving you £20.20 (80.80%) | RRP
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs opens with the stitched-together prehistoric family about to become a biological one: Manny (voiced by Ray Romano) and his mate Ellie (Queen Latifah) are expecting a baby mammoth. Unfortunately, this makes Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo) and Diego the sabre-toothed tiger (Denis Leary) feel left out. Diego, who worries he?s losing his edge, decides to head out on his own, while Sid adopts three suspiciously large eggs that he?s found through a crack in the ice. Up to this point, the movie is perilously sappy--does anyone, particularly a kid, want to watch a kid?s movie about parenthood and impending middle age? Fortunately, the eggs turn out to be dinosaur eggs from a pre-mammalian underworld, and when the mama T-Rex comes to rescue her rambunctious little ones, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs transforms into a delightful comic adventure. The emotional side of the Ice Age movies has always been a tad mawkish, so it?s smart that Dawn of the Dinosaurs emphasises physical comedy. Clearly, the animators have been inspired by a wild fusion of Road Runner cartoons and Buster Keaton. The character of Scratte, with his non-verbal, monomaniacal efforts to get that last acorn (doubled in this movie with the addition of a female counterpart), is only the most obvious reflection of this sensibility. The animators have great fun with the differences in scale between the mammals and the dinosaurs, and the introduction of a deranged Australian weasel named Buck (Simon Pegg, Shaun of the Dead) pushes everything into Loony-Tune territory. Let Pixar tug at our heartstrings; Ice Age aims to tickle the funny bone and does a fine job of it.--Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com
Rio (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray) | Blu Ray | (17/09/2012)
from £3.99 | Saving you £26.00 (86.70%) | RRP
A classic tale of self-discovery, romance, and adventure, Rio is the story of Blu, a flightless macaw who was taken from the forests of Rio de Janeiro as a young bird and raised by a kind girl in a small Minnesota town. When an ornithologist comes to town and informs Blu's now-grown owner Linda that Blu is the last male of his species, Blu and Linda return to Rio so that Blu can mate with a feisty female named Jewel. Thus begins an adventure in which Blu encounters everything from the complexities of courtship and love, to thugs involved in an exotic animal theft ring, strange new friendships--including one with an overly friendly slobbering bulldog--and a crazy ride through a carnival parade. Blu and Linda both mature as a result of their journey in Rio, and love ensures that life will never be quite the same for either ever again. The animation in Rio is quite impressive, the characters are endearing, the Brazilian music is very appealing, and the star-studded voice cast includes Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Will.i.am, Wanda Sykes, Jane Lynch, George Lopez and Jamie Foxx. While the story doesn't really offer anything new--instead playing much like a rehashing of some of the major plot points from movies like Madagascar, Finding Nemo and Babe--that doesn't mean the film isn't perfectly entertaining for both kids and adults. StreetDance 3D | DVD | (27/09/2010)
from £2.34 | Saving you £17.65 (88.30%) | RRP
Vertigo Films presents the UK's first ever street dance movie and the first British film to be shot entirely in 3D. With debut film appearances from Britain's Got Talent stars Flawless Diversity and George Sampson this groundbreaking event movie is an inspiring exhilarating joyride through the UK's street dance scene. Things couldn't be going better for street dancer Carly (Nichola Burley). She's in love with charismatic boyfriend Jay (Ukweli Roach) and their dance crew has just made it through to the finals of the UK Street Dance Championships. But everything changes when Jay walks out on Carly and the crew breaking her heart and leaving the street dancers' dreams in jeopardy. Thrown in at the deep end Carly struggles to prove to the crew - and to herself - that she can lead them to victory. Salvation comes in the unlikely shape of ballet schoolmistress Helena (Charlotte Rampling). Impressed by the skill and enthusiasm of Carly and her troupe she strikes the street dancers a deal: they can practice in the Ballet Academy's luxurious dance studio in return for collaborating with her ballet dancers. Helena hopes Carly can inject some of the street dancers' intensity and passion into her young charges before they audition for The Royal Ballet. A clash of cultures ensues as the two very different dance styles face off against each other. After years of classical training the ballet dancers are horrified at the crew's slouchy style while Carly is increasingly exasperated at their uptight aloofness. Eventually and despite themselves the ballet dancers begin to feel a grudging respect for the street dancers' spectacular moves. And Carly can't help falling for handsome ballet dancer Tomas (Richard Winsor). Will the two groups of dancers find a way to work together before the Street Dance Championship finals and the Royal Ballet auditions?
