The Odd Couple | DVD | (02/09/2002)
from £5.99 | Saving you £7.00 (53.90%) | RRP
Neil Simon's classic stage comedy made an effortless transition to the big screen in 1967, when The Odd Couple provided Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau with a tailor-made mid-career affirmation of their status as two of cinema's greatest funny men. Lemmon is Felix, manically obsessed with cleanliness and housekeeping, struggling to understand why his wife wants a divorce. Matthau is Oscar, his slovenly poker-playing buddy who invites him to take the spare room and lives to regret it as they rapidly and comically come to grief like an old, totally incompatible, married couple, revealing exactly why their respective wives have had enough. "I don't think two single men living alone in a big eight-room apartment should have a cleaner house than my mother", Matthau wails, trying to make sense of the disintegrating situation. The pair devour Simon's typically sharp and witty script in a frenzy of classic one-liners that allow Lemmon's trademark twitchy neurosis and Matthau's baleful cussedness to flourish. Great as they are, though, they are nearly eclipsed in the funniest scene of the film by Monica Evans and Carole Shelly as a couple of British expatriate sisters from the apartment upstairs. Carry On innuendo briefly meets Manhattan repartee and the screen crackles with brilliance. It's a comic masterclass. On the DVD: The Odd Couple on disc has no extras apart from the original cinema trailer, but the film, presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, is pristine, Neal Hefti's score providing that instantly identifiable flavour of sophisticated 1960s American comedy. --Piers Ford

In 2010 the rock band The National released their fifth album High Violet. After ten years as critical darlings the band was finally enjoying wider recognition. As they were about to embark on the biggest tour of their career lead singer Matt Berninger invited his younger brother Tom to be a part of their tour crew. A budding filmmaker and horror movie enthusiast Tom brought along his camera to film the experience. Mistaken For Strangers follows the story of two brothers at very different moments in their lives. Approaching forty Matt is just now beginning to experience life as a rock star. Before he is invited on tour Tom age 30 is still living at home in Cincinnati. On tour Tom struggles to keep up with his crew duties. He watches his older brother perform sold-out shows for screaming fans and feels increasingly cut off from him. He doesn't always understand the band's success (he prefers heavy metal). He falls into bad habits loses track of the film he is trying to make and Matt starts to come down on him. Eventually Tom gets fired. After tour Tom moves in with Matt and his wife Carin who put him up until he finishes the film. This proves difficult; Tom shot over 200 hours of footage. He's scattered overwhelmed and feeling lost. The film Tom finally produces is a hilarious and touching look at two very different brothers and an odd but strangely moving portrait of a popular nuanced band. Westworld - 40th Anniversary Edition | Blu Ray | (27/10/2014)
from £9.79 | Saving you £8.20 (45.60%) | RRP
Welcome to Delos, the high-tech Disneyland for adults that Michael Crichton created for Westworld, a nifty science fiction thriller from 1973 that also marked the popular novelist's feature-film directorial debut. The movie is so named because the vacationing buddies who travel to Delos (James Brolin, Richard Benjamin) choose Westworld as their destination (the other choices being Roman World and Medieval World), where they are free to indulge their movie-inspired fantasies of the Wild West). The place is populated by perfectly humanlike robots programmed and monitored to cater to every guest's fancy, from brothel beauties to black-hatted gunslingers (such as the villain played by Yul Brynner). But fun turns into abject horror when the robots--particularly Brynner's villain--begin to malfunction and Delos turns into an amusement park that's anything but amusing. Westworld has moments of camp and the look of a low-budget back-lot production, but two decades before Crichton revamped his idea to create Jurassic Park, this movie made the most of its interesting and exciting premise. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
