  • Stanley Kubrick [1962] Stanley Kubrick | DVD | (10/09/2001) from £99.99  |  Saving you £0.00 (0.00%)  |  RRP £99.99

This superb nine-disc Stanley Kubrick Box Set contains all the late director's work from 1962's Lolita to Kubrick's final film, the highly controversial Eyes Wide Shut (1999). There's also the excellent and highly informative two-hour documentary: Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures, narrated (a little drably) by Tom Cruise. It isn't exactly a warts-and-all portrait of Stan the Man, which is not surprising, really, given that it's directed and produced by Kubrick's brother-in-law Jan Harlan, and that Kubrick's widow Christine was closely involved in the making of it. But it does give a detailed and revealing portrait of a brilliant, demanding and often infuriating man, airing rare footage that goes right back to his earliest years as a brash youngster in the Bronx, already playing to camera with a frightening degree of self-awareness. Six of the eight movies (all but Dr Strangelove and Eyes Wide Shut) have been digitally restored and remastered, and almost all (barring Strangelove again and Lolita) now boast Dolby Digital 5.1 stereo sound remixes. For some bizarre reason, Kubrick insisted on mono sound for the 1999 set, which he approved shortly before his death. Visually the improvement over the often grainy, scratchy prints previously on offer--The Shining (1980) was notoriously messy--is immense. All the features are presented in their original ratios, which in the case of Strangelove means the changing ratios in which it was originally shot, and for 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) the full glorious 2.21:1 expanse of the Cinerama screen. So what don't you get? Essentially, the early Kubrick--the work of the young, hungry director before he moved to England and started to gather all the controlling strings into his own hand: most notably the tough, taut thriller The Killing (1956) and the icily furious war film Paths of Glory (1957). Too bad Warners couldn't have negotiated the rights for those too. But what we have here is the culminating phase of Kubrick's filmmaking career--the final 27 years of one of the great masters of cinema. On the DVDs: Besides the visual and sonic improvements mentioned above, each of the eight features includes the original theatrical trailer and multiple-language subtitles. The DVD of Dr Strangelove also gives us filmographies of the principal players, plus theatrical posters and a photo gallery, while Eyes Wide Shut includes interviews (taped after Kubrick's death) with Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman and Steven Spielberg, plus a couple of 30-second TV spots. And with The Shining we get a fascinating 34-minute documentary made by Kubrick's then 17-year-old daughter Vivian, plus--just to add a further layer--Vivian's present-day voice-over commentary on her film. --Philip Kemp

  • My Learned Friend [DVD] [1943] My Learned Friend | DVD | (27/04/2009) from £11.59  |  Saving you £4.40 (27.50%)  |  RRP £15.99

Will Hay (Dandy Dick The Goose Steps Out) plays a disbarred solicitor who with the help of Claude (Claude Hulbert) embarks on a frantic chase in pursuit of a psychopathic murderer newly released from prison. The prisoner is working through a vengeance list with Claude's name near the top... Directed by Basil Dearden and Will Hay My Learned Friend offers a fascinating insight into the direction Will Hay might have taken if ill health had not caused this Ealing picture to be his last. The tone is much darker than his previous films and the humour much of it revolving around a sequence of grisly murders foreshadows the blackest of Ealing's post-war comedies such as Kind Hearts and Coronets.

Director William Friedkin was a hot ticket in Hollywood after the success of The French Connection, and he turned heads (in more ways than one) when he decided to make The Exorcist as his follow-up film. Adapted by William Peter Blatty from his controversial best-seller, this shocking 1973 thriller set an intense and often-copied milestone for screen terror with its unflinching depiction of a young girl (Linda Blair) who is possessed by an evil spirit. Jason Miller and Max von Sydow are perfectly cast as the priests who risk their sanity and their lives to administer the rites of demonic exorcism, and Ellen Burstyn plays Blair's mother, who can only stand by in horror as her daughter's body is wracked by satanic disfiguration. One of the most frightening films ever made, The Exorcist was mysteriously plagued by troubles during production, and the years have not diminished its capacity to disturb even the most stoical viewers. --Jeff Shannon

Frau im Mond. [Woman in the Moon.] is: The first feature-length film to portray space-exploration in a serious manner paying close attention to the science involved in launching a vessel from the surface of the earth to the valleys of the moon. A tri-polar potboiler of a picture that manages to combine espionage tale serial melodrama and comic-book sci-fi into a storyline that is by turns delirious hushed and deranged. A movie so rife with narrative contradiction and visual ingenuity that it could only be the work of one filmmaker: Fritz Lang. In this Lang's final silent epic the legendary filmmaker spins a tale involving a wicked cartel of spies who co-opt an experimental mission to the moon in the hope of plundering the satellite's vast (and highly theoretical) stores of gold. When the crew helmed by Willy Fritsch and Gerda Maurus (both of whom had previously starred in Lang's Spione) finally reach their impossible destination they find themselves stranded in a lunar labyrinth without walls - where emotions run scattershot and the new goal becomes survival. A modern Daedalus tale which uncannily foretold Germany's wartime push into rocket-science Frau im Mond. Is as much a warning sign against human hubris as it is a hopeful depiction of mankind's potential. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present in a Dual Format (Blu-ray + DVD) special edition the culmination of Fritz Lang's silent cinema restored to its near-original length. Special Features: Gorgeous 1080p transfer on the Blu-ray of the F. W. Murnau-Stiftung restoration Original German intertitles with newly translated optional English subtitles The First Scientific Science-Fiction Film - a German documentary about Frau im Mond. Made by Gabriele Jacobi [15:00] 36-page booklet which includes a newly revised analysis by Michael E. Grost on the film and on Fritz Lang's body of work as a whole
