Ugetsu Monogatari (Dual Format Edition) | Blu Ray | (23/04/2012)
from £11.44 | Saving you £11.55 (50.20%) | RRP
Mizoguchi's Ugetsu Monogatari [Tales of the Rain and Moon, aka Ugetsu] is a highly acclaimed masterwork of Japanese cinema. Based on a pair of 18th century ghost stories by Ueda Akinari, the film's release continued Mizoguchi's introduction to the West, where it was nominated for an Oscar and won the the Venice Film Festival's Silver Lion award (for Best Direction). In 16th century Japan, amidst the pandemonium of civil war, potter Genjuro (Mori Masayuki) and samurai-aspirant Tobei (Ozawa Sakae) set out with their wives in search of wealth and military glory respectively. Two parallel tales ensue when the men are lured from their wives: Genjuro by the ghostly charm of Lady Wakasa (Kyo Machiko); Tobei by the dream of military glory. Famed for its meticulously orchestrated long takes and its subtle blending of realistic period reconstruction and lyrical supernaturalism, Ugetsu Monogatari is an intensely poetic tragedy that consistently features on polls of the best films ever made.

One of the most popular television comedies of all time The Lucy Show was the follow up to the equally successful I Love Lucy. Whilst I Love Lucy was pre-dominantly set in New York The Lucy Show saw Lucille switch to the West Coast working at a bank as secretary to Mr Carmichael. The series would eventually feature guest appearances from fellow celebrities all of whom wanted to either open accounts or had some dealings with the bank. Not surprisingly Lucille's attempts to assist invariably went wrong. Sometimes things went wrong that weren't in the script - the very first show in this set Lucy And Viv Put In A Shower sees Lucy and Viv trying to install a shower in order to save paying a plumber and become trapped inside as it continues to fill with water. Midway through filming Lucy was unable to return to the surface and was in danger of drowning. Her co-star Vivian Vance realized something was wrong and pulled her to safety then ad-libbed whilst Lucy got her breath back. The remaining cast and crew and live audience were completely unaware of the problem until told after the show was completed. The thirty episodes in this box set has guest appearances from John Wayne Jack Benny Phil Silvers Tennessee Ernie Ford and Robert Boulet among others and feature Lucy in one mishap after another. Carry On Follow That Camel | DVD | (27/08/2001)
from £2.76 | Saving you £3.60 (36.00%) | RRP
In Carry On Follow That Camel, Sergeant Bilko himself, Phil Silvers, lends lustre and trademark spectacles to this 1967 desert spectacle following the adventures of a group of foreign legionnaires who find themselves besieged by a bloodthirsty band of Bedouins. Silvers plays Sergeant Nocker, a rogue cast firmly in the Bilko mould, who takes a dislike to new recruit Jim Dale, a young upper class gent forced to join the legion following disgrace at a cricket match. He's accompanied, naturally, by his faithful manservant (Peter Butterworth), with the pair showing a fine disregard for the austere requirements of the Foreign Legion. However, once they reach an agreement with Sergeant Nocker, they can join forces to repel the Bedouins, led, not unpredictably, by Bernard Bresslaw. This is vintage Carry On, in spite of Sid James' absence. Kenneth Williams' performance is subdued by having to deliver the usual puns ("zere are a couple of points I still need to go over", he informs busty Joan Sims) in a mangled French accent but Silvers gets into the right mode of delivering broad comedy with subtle inflections. Peter Butterworth draws the short straw this time and must feature in the obligatory cross-dressing scene, while Charles Hawtrey is a splendidly unconvincing hardened legionnaire. As for Bresslaw, can any other British actor, with the exception of Sir Alec Guinness, have distinguished himself in such a variety of multi-ethnic roles? On the DVD: Sadly, there are no extra features except scene selection. The picture ratio is 4:3. --David Stubbs
