  • Witness [1985] Witness | DVD | (02/10/2000) from £19.99  |  Saving you £-12.00 (-92.40%)  |  RRP £12.99

When Samuel (Lukas Haas), a young Amish boy travelling with his mother Rachel (Kelly McGillis), witnesses the murder of a police officer in a public restroom, he and his mother become the temporary wards of John Book (Harrison Ford), a detective who's been assigned to solve the crime. After suspect line-ups and mug-shot books yield nothing, Samuel, in the most memorable scene of the film, recognizes the murderer as a narcotics agent whose picture he sees in the precinct. Once Book realizes that the police chief is in on it, too, he whisks Samuel and Rachel back home to Amish country, where he himself goes into hiding as a plain Amish man. Witness' juxtaposition of the life of the Amish and the violence of inner-city police corruption work surprisingly well for the story, and Kelly McGillis as the falling in love widow gives an almost perfect performance. Directed by Peter Weir, the film is extremely successful in drawing the viewer into its world and, accordingly, is immensely entertaining. The only thing that mars its polish is the one-dimensional, almost cartoonish handling of the upper-echelon police corruption--a subtler, more realistic treatment of this aspect of the story would have rendered the film near perfect. --James McGrath, Amazon.com

THE COMPLETE FRITZ LANG MABUSE BOX SET - From the early stages of his career across five decades to his final film Fritz Lang built a trilogy of paranoiac thrillers focused on an entity who began as a criminal mastermind and progressed into something more amorphous: fear itself embodied only by a name - Dr. Mabuse. For the first time on home video all three of Fritz Lang's Mabuse films have been collected for one package in their complete and restored forms. 1: Dr. Mabuse der Spieler. [Dr. Mabuse the Gambler.] (1922) - Lang's two-part nearly 5-hour silent epic detailing the rise and fall of Dr. Mabuse in Weimar-era Berlin. 2: Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse [The Testament of Dr. Mabuse] (1933) - a tour-de-force thriller rife with supernatural elements all converging around an attempt by the now-institutionalised Mabuse (or someone acting under his name... and possibly his will) to organise an Empire of Crime. 3: Die 1000 Augen des Dr. Mabuse [The 1000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse] (1960) - Fritz Lang's final film in which hypnosis clairvoyance surveillance and machine-guns come together for a whiplash climax that answers the question: Who's channelling Mabuse's methods in the Cold War era? The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Fritz Lang's complete Mabuse trilogy - a cornerstone in the work of one of cinema's all-time greatest directors. The Complete Fritz Lang Mabuse Box Set is released on 19 October 2009

With Pulp Fiction writer-director Quentin Tarantino stunned the filmmaking world, exploding into prominence as a cinematic heavyweight contender after initial success with 1992's Reservoir Dogs. But Pulp Fiction was more than just the follow-up to an impressive first feature, or the winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival, or a script stuffed with the sort of juicy bubblegum dialogue actors just love to chew, or the vehicle that re-established John Travolta on the A-list, or the relatively low-budget ($8 million) independent showcase for an ultra-hip mixture of established marquee names and rising stars from the indie scene (among them Samuel L Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Harvey Keitel, Christopher Walken, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Julia Sweeney, Kathy Griffin and Phil Lamar). It was more, even, than an unprecedented $100-million-plus hit for indie distributor Miramax. Pulp Fiction was a sensation. It packs so much energy and invention into telling its non-chronologically interwoven short stories (all about temptation, corruption and redemption among modern criminals, large and small) it leaves viewers both exhilarated and exhausted--hearts racing and knuckles white from the ride. (Oh, and the infectious, surf-guitar-based soundtrack is tastier than a Royale with Cheese.) --Jim Emerson

Revered filmmaker Martin Scorsese directs the true story of New York stockbroker Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio). From the American dream to corporate greed Belfort goes from penny stocks and righteousness to IPOs and a life of corruption in the late 80s. Excess success and affluence in his early twenties as founder of the brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont warranted Belfort the title - 'The Wolf of Wall Street.' Money. Power. Women. Drugs. Temptations were for the taking and the threat of authority was irrelevant. For Jordan and his wolf pack modesty was quickly deemed overrated and more was never enough. • Most Wanted [1998] Most Wanted | DVD | (01/10/1999) from £5.99  |  Saving you £-4.01 (-25.10%)  |  RRP £15.99

Comic actor Keenen Ivory Wayans made a creditable effort to expand his career horizons by writing the script for this action thriller, in which he also stars. Wayans plays US Marine Sgt James Dunn, a military hero who refuses an order to shoot a young shepherd during the Gulf War. His insubordination leads to a lethal struggle with a superior officer and a subsequent murder conviction against Dunn.Plucked from his death sentence by a covert unit of Marines, however, Dunn soon finds himself in a shadowy world of undercover wars under the command of one Lt Col. Grant Casey (Jon Voight). Offered freedom in exchange for aiding a mission against a corrupt industrialist (Robert Culp), Dunn agrees and then discovers he has actually been set up to take the fall for an assassination. Suddenly, he's the most wanted man in the world, with police, the military, the Secret Service and legions of reward seekers chasing him around Los Angeles. Jill Hennessy stars as an eyewitness who happened to catch the killing on videotape and can clear Dunn if she would only cooperate with him--a problem, since he has kidnapped her. Directed by David Glenn Hogan, Most Wanted works just fine as a well-oiled action piece with a capable star and competent action sequences. The story ideas (especially Dunn's Rambo-esque flight through the city and his reliance on esoteric survival skills) feel overly familiar, but that only makes Most Wanted all the more enjoyable as a pot-boiler instead of a serious original. --Tom Keogh

  • Pathe Archive -A Year To Remember - The 1930s [DVD] Pathe Archive -A Year To Remember - The 1930s | DVD | (30/05/2011) from £20.95  |  Saving you £4.00 (16.00%)  |  RRP £24.99

Using rare news footage and interviews from the incredible British Pathe archive this extraordinary series provides a unique look at what made the news of yesteryear. With a comprehensive hour long programme on each year of the 1930s this 3 disc-set provides the definitive insight into the decade leading up to World War 2. In a world reeling from the Great Depression the decade was dominated by record levels of unemployment and economic hardship with newsreels doing their best to maintain morale. The growing fascination with technological progress was regularly featured showcasing the rapid developments in flight and speed in particular. The exploits of Amelia Earhart and Malcolm Campbell thrilled people up and down the country. The world was shrinking too with the first telephone call between Britain and Australia and the launch of the Zeppelin airships. Following the death of King George V Britain was soon to be rocked by the abdication of his successor King Edward VIII over his intention to marry the twice divorced socialite Wallis Simpson. His brother George VI the so-called 'reluctant king' proved an immensely popular replacement. The decade was an era of great and lasting political change. In Britain Ramsey MacDonald led the first National Government whilst in the U.S.A. Franklin D. Roosevelt assumed the presidency and urged his fellow Americans that the only thing to fear was fear itself and showed the way out of the Great Depression. However it was the rise of Adolf Hitler and his fascist regime in German politics that made the world bristle. Despite the diplomatic efforts of Neville Chamberlain with his promise of peace in our time war was officially declared in 1939. Other more light hearted events of the decade are included such as the first egg-timer alarms Fred Perry winning Wimbledon the first indoor ski slope and the introduction of an albeit rudimentary driving test! Relive all these events and many many more with A Year To Remember: The 1930s.
