Shoah | DVD | (19/02/2007)
from £24.99 | Saving you £25.00 (50.00%) | RRP
Shoah is Claude Lanzmann's landmark documentary meditation on the Holocaust. Assembled from footage shot by the filmmaker during the 1970s and 1980s it investigates the genocide at the level of experience: the geographical layout of the camps and the ghettos; the daily routines of imprisonment; the inexorable trauma of humiliation punishment extermination; and the fascinating insights of those who experienced these events first hand. Absent from the film is any imagery shot at the time the Holocaust occurred. There is only Lanzmann and his crew filming in private spaces and now-dormant zones of eradication to extract testimony from a series of survivors witnesses and oppressors alike. Through his relentless questioning (aided on occasion by hidden camera) Lanzmann is able to coax out material of unparalleled emotional truth that constitutes both precious oral history and withering indictment. Shoah (the title is a common designation for the Holocaust and a Hebrew word that can be translated as 'Catastrophe' or 'Annihilation') was the first of Lanzmann's films to analyse the effects of the death camps on individual lives and the world at large. It represents an aesthetic achievement in line with Alain Resnais's Night and Fog combining inquiry rage and mourning to create a monumental portrait of shame and grief. Shoah locates within the present a direct line to the horrors of the past and is widely regarded as one of the most powerful films of all time.

Wagner | DVD | (18/07/2011)
from £22.99 | Saving you £0.00 (0.00%) | RRP
Tony Palmer's epic film was made in 1982/3 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Wagner's death. Filmed in 200 locations throughout Europe, many where the actual historical events took place, with a team from 19 different countries, the entire production was completed in less than a year. Sadly Wagner was to be Richard Burton's last major role, but the stellar cast - including Laurence Oliver, John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave, Lszl Gllfi, Gemma Craven, Ekkehardt Schall, Richard Pasco, Marthe Keller, Gabriel Byrne, Franco Nero, Ronald Pickup, Corin Redgrave, Cyril Cusack, Prunella Scales, Andrew Cruickshank, Joan Greenwood, Liza Goddard, Bill Fraser, Arthur Lowe, Joan Plowright, with composer Sir William Walton in a cameo role - assembled partly because of him.Only now is the film being released on DVD as its director Tony Palmer wishes it to be viewed. Previously it's been seen in badly edited versions and been made available on DVD (reproduced from poor-quality VHSs) with sub-standard pictures and sound. Finally, here is the restored presentation as it was originally edited by Tony Palmer in its complete 7 hours 46 minutes duration, issued in wide-screen, re-mastered in Hi-Definition. The music, performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Georg Solti with singers including Dame Gwyneth Jones and Peter Hofmann, has never sounded better, and the astonishing images of cameramen Vittorio Storaro and Nic Knowland have never looked better. The script by Charles Wood remains a miracle of historical compression and accuracy, given that Wagner himself was an appalling fantasist and the truth often hard to ascertain. And Richard Burton, who towers above the production, reminds us what a great actor he was. This is a fitting tribute to his - and to Wagner's - genius.
Nigella Bites | DVD | (06/09/2004)
from £21.20 | Saving you £-11.21 (-112.20%) | RRP
Nigella Bites is an indisputably sensual addition to the canon of cookery programmes. After fearsome Fanny Craddock, dowdy Delia Smith, jolly Jamie Oliver, here is naughty Nigella Lawson. For her, the whole point of cooking is the "pleasure" of food. She espouses uncomplicated recipes for a modern generation constantly on the go and gives short shrift to dietary considerations. Her recipes duly come under such categories as "Comfort Food", "Trashy", "Party Girl" and "TV Dinners". While some might query whether recipes such as pumpkin seafood curry or one whose ingredients involve two types of potato and a Greek cheese really constitute quick, easy and convenient cooking, such qualms soon melt into insignificance. As the parodists were quick to point out, there is something of a sexual sub-text to Nigella Bites, as much in the lingering attention on the presenter herself as the unashamed sensuality of its recipes. Watch in rapture as the camera scans up and down Nigella's curvaceous but not too well-nourished figure, zooms in on her luscious lips, follows her into her store cupboard to "see my chocolate stash", or wobbles in sympathetic ecstasy as she applies lashings of cream or expertly spatchcocks a chicken. In short, whether you're an envious female wondering how Nigella manages to juggle a hectic life and still produce such delicious culinary fare, or a couch potato male who can barely boil an egg, chances are you'll find much to delight in here. A companion book is also available. On the DVD: Nigella Bites on disc features numerous extras, including the Christmas special episode, two extra recipes (one for pasta and bean soup, the other an aubergine dish) and, helpfully, full lists of ingredients for each recipe. --David Stubbs
Ancient Aliens - The Complete Seasons 1 & 2 | DVD | (24/09/2012)
from £25.92 | Saving you £4.07 (13.60%) | RRP
Is it possible that intelligent life forms visited Earth thousands of years ago, bringing with them technology that drastically affected the course of history and our own development? Originally presented in Erich von Daniken's 1968 bestseller Chariots of the Gods, the theory of 'ancient aliens' rocked our accepted notions of mankind's natural evolution. From the age of dinosaurs to ancient Egypt, from early cave drawings to continued mass sightings in the United States, each episode in this series gives historic depth to the questions, speculations, provocative controversies, first-hand accounts and grounded theories surrounding an age-old debate: did intelligent forms from outer space visit Earth thousands of years ago? Do they visit us now? Ancient Aliens launches all-new expeditions to seek out and evaluate the original evidence, concentrating on discoveries from the past 30 years. It is a balanced investigation into a theory some believe cannot be true, but many agree cannot be ignored.

This is the incredibly powerful story of the Stalin years. It is based on rarely seen archival footage, contemporary diaries and documents and personal memoirs, as well as interviews with relatives and those people who survived the Gulag labour camps and World War II. It follows the events from Stalin's rise to power, his association with Hitler and the Soviet involvement in the Second World War right through to his death. First regarded as a visionary, it soon became apparent that Stalin was a capricious, ruthless tyrant who would arrange for the ‘removal’ of anyone he thought was opposing him. For nearly 30 years, he maintained power without challenge by manipulating his people through propaganda, state sponsored lies and terror. In this tremendously moving and at times graphic, harrowing and shocking documentary, we witness the suffering and sacrifices of the people of the Soviet Union and discover what led to the death of millions of Soviet citizens during the Great Patriotic War.
