  • Four Weddings And A Funeral [1994] Four Weddings And A Funeral | DVD | (29/11/2004) from £4.49  |  Saving you £15.50 (77.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

  • Mrs Doubtfire [1993] Mrs Doubtfire | DVD | (30/07/2001) from £2.77  |  Saving you £10.22 (78.70%)  |  RRP £12.99

This huge 1993 hit for Robin Williams and director Chris Columbus (Home Alone), based on a novel called Alias Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine, stars Williams as a loving but flaky father estranged from his frustrated wife (Sally Field). Devastated by a court order limiting his time with the children, Williams's character disguises himself as a warm, old British nanny who becomes the kids' best friend. As with Dustin Hoffman's performance in Tootsie, Williams's drag act--buried under layers of latex and padding--is the show, and everything and everyone else on screen serves his sometimes frantic role. Since that's the case, it's fortunate that Williams is Williams, and his performance is terribly funny at times and exceptionally believable in those scenes where his character misses his children. Playing Williams's brother, a professional makeup artist, Harvey Fierstein has a good support role in a bright sequence where he tries a number of feminine looks on Williams before settling on Mrs Doubtfire's visage. --Tom Keogh

  • The Family Man [2000] The Family Man | DVD | (02/07/2001) from £3.49  |  Saving you £16.50 (82.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

Jack Campbell (Nicolas Cage) is a quintessential Wall Street shark, scoring killer deals by day and shallow escort sex by night in The Family Man. Carp all you want about this derivative premise, with its marginal stereotypes and biased embrace of domestic bliss and dirty nappies. The simple fact is, The Family Man works like a charm. Under the assured direction of Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), this holiday crowd-pleaser offers comedy and chemistry in equal measure, making the hilarity of Jack's predicament a smooth catalyst for that rarest of film romances: the marital love story. Leoni is Cage's perfect match as Jack's idealised but imperfect wife and the films's appeal largely derives from its awareness that any life has its pleasures and pains. While it only flirts with the dark desperation that makes It's a Wonderful Life a classic predecessor, The Family Man is an irresistible what-if fantasy and even its debatable ending rides on a wave of genuine warmth and sentiment. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
