Woody Allen: Seven Films - 1986-1991 | Blu Ray | (20/02/2017)
from £28.99 | Saving you £N/A (N/A%) | RRP
Arrow Academy's third Woody Allen collection spans 1986-91 and the bulk of his work with Mia Farrow, who is featured in all seven of these films. They start with the much-loved family saga Hannah and Her Sisters, a warm and witty return to Allen's beloved Manhattan, and the nostalgic Radio Days, a collection of stories from the time of Allen's own 1930s/40s childhood. More sombre fare comes with the Chekhov-influenced ensemble piece September and Another Woman, with a tour de force role for Gena Rowlands as a middle-aged philosophy professor whose accidental eavesdropping makes her reassess her life. And with Crimes and Misdemeanors, Allen made one of his greatest films, a multi-layered and almost Dostoyevskian reflection on guilt that also finds room for some of his funniest one-liners. The box concludes with two of his more fantastical films, the romantic comedy Alice, in which relationships are guided with the aid of mysterious ?invisibility herbs', and the black-and-white, star-studded Shadows and Fog, an homage to Kafka and German Expressionism that was based on Allen's own one-act play Death. Collection includes: Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) Radio Days (1987) September (1987) Another Woman (1988) Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) Alice (1990) Shadows and Fog (1991) Exclusive to this collection: a hardback book featuring new and archive writing on all the films by Woody Allen, Richard Ayoade, Frank Collins, Glenn Kenny, Guy Lodge, Sheila O'Malley, Leanne Weston and Craig Williams

Bowfinger | Blu Ray | (26/09/2016)
from £8.99 | Saving you £N/A (N/A%) | RRP
Film-makers often remark that it's just so hard to make a bad picture that few would take on the challenge if they weren't so naive. Steve Martin's Bobby Bowfinger is cut from that pattern, one of those sweet, indomitable operators of Hollywood who seem to be descended directly from Ed Wood (of Plan 9 from Outer Space infamy). To resurrect his ramshackle existence, Bowfinger opts to film his accountant's sci-fi spectacular,Chubby Rain, about aliens invading in raindrops. The snag is he needs to attach action megastar Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy), an actor so paranoid he counts the occurrences of the letter "k" in scripts to uncover possible Ku Klux Klan influences. When his effort fails, Bowfinger hits on an ingenious scheme to film Ramsey without his knowledge, throwing his actors at the hapless star whenever he appears in public. Only Kit begins to believe he's being hounded by aliens for real, and runs hysterically to his guru (Terence Stamp) at a Scientology-clone group called MindHead, where people walk around in fine suits wearing white pyramids on their heads. Deprived of his star, yet not to be undone, Bowfinger hires a look-alike, Jiff (also Eddie Murphy), to fill in. The tone of the picture is sometimes flat, rather than deadpan, but that's nitpicking. The farce is quick and engrossing, and populated with terrific performances, especially by Eddie Murphy, whose dual role as Kit and Jiff showcases his character-building gift, and by Martin, whose Bowfinger, part con man and part would-be visionary, manages to capture your sympathies. Heather Graham's would-be actress cheerfully sleeps her way to the top like she knows she's supposed to, and Christine Baranski plays her shopworn method actor with myopic self-absorption. --Jim Gay, Amazon.com

Fletch | Blu Ray | (25/04/2016)
from £8.93 | Saving you £10.94 (54.70%) | RRP
Fletch is a fairly sarcastic and occasionally very funny Chevy Chase vehicle scripted by Andrew Bergman (Blazing Saddles, The Freshman, Honeymoon in Vegas) from Gregory McDonald's lightweight mystery novel about an undercover newspaper reporter cracking a police drug ring. Enjoyment of the film pivots on whether you find Chase's flippant, smart-ass brand of verbal humour funny, or merely egocentric. If you don't like Chase, there's really no one else worth watching (Geena Davis is sadly underused). Chase seems born to play IM "Fletch" Fletcher, a disillusioned investigative reporter whose cynicism and detached view on life mirrors the actor's understated approach to comedy. Fletcher offers Chase the opportunity to adopt numerous personas, as his job requires numerous (bad) physical disguises, and much of film's humour centres on the ridiculous idea that any of these phoney accents or bad hairpieces could fool anyone. These not-so-clever disguises are put to use when Fletch becomes involved in the film's smart but continually self-mocking two-part mystery. As well as trying to gather drug-smuggling evidence against the LAPD for a long-overdue newspaper story, a rich and apparently terminally ill stranger also offers Fletch a large payoff to kill him. While the film does a fairly good job juggling both of these plots, not to mention tossing in a love interest as well, they're subservient, for better or worse, to Chase's memorable one-liners and disguises. Followed by two forgettable sequels that lack both the original's wit and Chase's attention span.--Dave McCoy, Amazon.com

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective/Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls | Blu Ray | (19/09/2016)
from £10.98 | Saving you £3.01 (21.50%) | RRP
The 1994 box-office hit that turned comedy maniac Jim Carrey into Hollywood's first $20-million man, this gag-filled no-brainer stars Carrey as the titular rubber-faced gumshoe who tracks down lost pets for his heartbroken clients. Ace's latest case involves the apparent kidnapping of the Miami Dolphins' team mascot, Snowflake the dolphin. His investigation is a source of constant aggravation for Miami police lieutenant Lois Einhorn (Sean Young), who turns out to be packing more than a pistol under her skirt. Friends fans will appreciate the presence of Courtney Cox, who remains admirably straight-faced as the Dolphins' publicist and Ace's would-be girlfriend, but of course it's Carrey who steals the show with shameless abandon. Carrey's hyper antics made Ace Ventura: Pet Detective one of the bestselling videos of the 1990s. This inevitable sequel finds Jim Carrey reprising his role as the world's greatest pet detective. His latest case, the disappearance of a rare African white bat, draws him out of his spiritual retreat at a Tibetan monastery following the tragic outcome of his previous case. That traumatic experience, which makes for a hilarious opening-scene send-up of the Stallone thriller Cliffhanger, prompts Ace to venture to Africa, where he goes native with the tribe that hired him to find their symbolic bat. From that point anything goes, with Carrey pushing the boundaries of good taste (what, you were expecting good taste?) up to and including his now-infamous "birth" scene from the backside of a mechanical rhinoceros. Hey, don't be ashamed if you find yourself laughing. --Jeff Shannon

Happy Gilmore | Blu Ray | (25/10/2010)
from £6.39 | Saving you £11.60 (64.50%) | RRP
Adam Sandler fans are sure to enjoy this no-brainer comedy, but everyone else is strongly advised to proceed with caution. Before scoring a more enjoyable hit with his 1998 comedy The Wedding Singer, the former Saturday Night Live goofball played Happy Gilmore, a hot-tempered guy whose dreams of hockey stardom elude him. But when he discovers his gift for driving golf balls hundreds of yards, he joins a pro tour to win the prize money needed to rescue his beloved grandma's home from repossession. The trouble is, Happy's not so happy. He's got a temper that frequently flares on the golf course (he even dukes it out with celebrity golfer Bob Barker), but a retired golf pro (Carl Weathers) and a compassionate publicist (Julie Bowen) help him to perfect his putting game and adjust his confrontational attitude. How much you enjoy this lunacy depends on your tolerance for Sandler's loudmouthed schtick and a shocking number of blatant product-placement endorsements, but if you're looking for broad comedy you've come to the right tee-off spot. --Jeff Shannon

Woody Allen: Six Films - 1971-1978 | Blu Ray | (03/10/2016)
from £42.19 | Saving you £57.80 (57.80%) | RRP
With these six films, Woody Allen made one of the most remarkable transitions ever seen in American cinema, from the slapstick buffoonery of the early, funny films to the Oscar-winning breakthrough of Annie Hall and the wholly serious Interiors. Along the way there's the Latin American revolutionary satire Bananas, genre-bending sex-education spoof Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex and hilarious time-travelling trips to a future America (Sleeper) and Napoleon-era Russia (Love and Death). All these early films star Allen himself, usually as a hapless victim of unfortunate events, aided by the likes of Diane Keaton (several times), John Carradine, Jessica Harper, Louise Lasser, Lynn Redgrave, Burt Reynolds, Gene Wilder and Daisy the sheep. But the the mature Woody Allen was first revealed in Annie Hall, a film firmly of its time and place (mid-1970s Manhattan) but also universal in its wry and witty examination of the foibles of human relationships. The claustrophobically Bergmanesque family drama Interiors once seemed like a startling change of direction, but now anticipates much of what came later. Collection includes: Bananas (1971) Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex *But Were Afraid to Ask (1972) Sleeper (1973) Love and Death (1975) Annie Hall (1977) Interiors (1978) Exclusive to this collection: Annie Hall and a 100-page hardback book featuring new and archive writing on all the films by Woody Allen, Michael Brooke, Johnny Mains, Kat Ellinger, John Leman Riley, Hannah Hamad and Brad Stevens.
